This was a terrifically explained video for getting your orchids ready for fall/winter. Thanks so much!! Hope your finger gets better...mine ended up needing surgery.
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai if the mount is not rotting , I would try and wire extra pieces of cork to the edges of the mount the plant is currently on so as not to disturb the root system again.
Hi Roger, I'm really glad to hear what you said about tolumnias, so clear and concise, things that I did not see on the web even on the AOS, my 4 tolumnias will be much happier. A few years ago Danny lost all her's probably because she didn’t know about what you just said.
Thanks again very informated I've left my Vanda's in water at night I've woken up and ran outside and taken them out I nearly died when I did that twice now ( informative)
Another brilliant and enjoyable video Roger, thank you. I wonder if you can tell me what variety / species your Dendrobium Latouria is? Would like to see what it’s flowers are like. Thanks again.
Question, what about Nobile seedlings? Should they rest? I have 2 that have 3 canes but the canes I grew this year are 3 times the cane last year. Trigger finger is HORRIBLE! I have it in my thumb and middle finger on my right hand of course! So I feel for you! I have your pulled back too now so I am layed up bad! 😬
Seedlings should be allowed to grow on if they choose to and if not, shouldn't be left dry for long. I'm hoping the brace will give it a chance to heal - but that doesn't always work.
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai Thanks. I will try to watch see what they need and go from there. Once the inflammation goes down your still have the sticking feelings, no smooth range with your thumb, but the pain will subside. Sadly some have to have surgery to fix. I had injections. It didn't help mine but that isn't always true for everyone. The brace does help. Best wishes.
Trigger thumb is not fun...I have a ring splint that keeps mine from bending. It’s worked well but after a year and a half I’m waiting for a specialist and likely surgery to fix it. Love your videos! Great video! Also my first winter here in Canada with my collection. Funny you mention the temperature change...here it’s gone from 26 down to a high of 12 and soon to be 6C within a week.
Two of my anceps and purpurata are with new growths. Even with low temperatures! Now I have doubts if I collect them inside the house or if I leave them in the garden!
Thanks Roger! perfect lecture for me today, my two nobile dendrobiums have finished their leafing, and went down to 50F last night so thinking time to slow down watering and possibly move them out of the real cold that is coming quickly, Take Care! Ouch that looks painful Carolyn
At the moment, I'm using the thermostat for 'cooling' - the fans come on when the temp gets above 21C. Soon, I'll be setting the heater up so it will be used for heating (the other socket). My minimum this Winter will be 14C
Roger's Orchids thank you! So setting up heater in winter time only and keep your grow space in between 59.2 F to 69.8 F! 59.2 feels pretty chilly. I did set it to 59 F then I felt it chilly so changed it to 61 F (15-16 C?) but I guess I will set it back to 59 F. That would same some energy bill.
It depends what orchids you grow. Warmer growers like Phalaenopsis will not like my 14C and would prefer 16C (or higher). Many are fine down to 12-14C at night.
Roger's Orchids Right! I am still experimenting on this new greenhouse setting... My greenhouse is 8 feet by 15 feet, and about 9 feet hight on the highest top. I still don’t know how the temperature differs from the entrance where the heater is to the end side which has two big trees providing the shade in mid day. The heater is set on 61 F so about 16C. I am thinking it would be a bit cooler towards the end side. But my day job (mailman) has been experiencing heavy workload in last three months, I can’t really check the difference... for that reason though, I mainly put oncidium types towards the end side, and cattleyas and more of warmer grower towards the entrance... hoping for a nice day while sun is still out to make the greenhouse tour video but so far no luck... 😭 10+hours a day, 6 days a week, and the only day off, I have full of chores that my wife would be waiting for me to do... lol she calls my day off as her day off so.... sometime soon, if you could watch the video and would like to know your thought on it though! Soon!
Good advices , I still thinking what and how to do a winter rest for my orchids this year, I had watch many of your pass youtube on winter rest and thinking about how and just nice you come a fresh new one. However my area is south east asian all year is hot, the only winter rest is to stop watering, but look like they keep growing never stop all year round, however like my dendrobium senile it just start two new grow this month, thinking am I going to winter rest it or not. Roger do you mind give some advice please.
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai Thank Roger , know what to do . Hope I can have it bloom in the coming year, as I have it for two year never seen the bloom . Thank and hope your thumb be better.
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai I had a similar injury from climbing and it still bothering me after years (should have used a brace but hey I was young(er) 🤣
I had a good laugh today with you Roger, you are hilarious, doing your little turns 😄😄😄. The Dendrobium Hercoglossum branches can be kept apart, this years growth can be kept left or right from last years so the blooms will not be hindered. And the old branches can be tied up together so it will be easier to remove next year. Just an idea 🤗🍀
Didn't take jenkinsii long to start growing around the side of the mount. One more year or will it get yanked and remounted again in the spring? Also, do I spy Cattleya Angel Heart blooming in the background? I guess I'll find out tomorrow.
The know winterresters are getting some kind of rest all the others get less feed and water but a lot (really a lot) are growing leaves or spikes or roots at the moment
You should be able to get good light and deal with the 'no feed' bit but you won't be able to drop the temps. Your nobiles will be fine but things like the loddigesii may not have as many blooms as it would with a cooling down. You should still get 'some'.

Ice ice baby. For your thumb. 👍

Loads of good useful information... thanks Roger.

I'll give the brace a chance to heal it - but it doesn't always work.
Jenkensii is looking good!
And after the blooms next year, what will I do as it's already reached the edges of the mount.

The problem with keeping them bare-rooted, is the watering - in warm weather, it should be twice a day but at least once a day.
Before you get your brace you can tape up your thumb to brace it.
I'm just being 'careful' for now.
Thanks again very informated I've left my Vanda's in water at night I've woken up and ran outside and taken them out I nearly died when I did that twice now ( informative)
As long as it's not too cold, it won't harm them.

It's a primary cross - eximium x rhodostictum
Incredibly interesting argument for me. This is my first winter with orchids. I will take note of your advices. Thank you!

I would try and keep them at reasonable temps if they are growing.

Wow, the "tangle up ballet" could be a nice feature in the channel! Loved it, as well as the chat of course! Thumbs up for your thumb!
I love your laelia anceps, I need one in my collection. I can’t wait for you to show us the blooms!
One of my all-time favourite blooms. Just a pity they don't last longer.
I would love to know your setting of the thermostats. I think I got exactly the same one (blue). And you have another one right next to it too?
