The Lincoln Highway opened in 1861??? it was compiled in1913 and at was not completely paved until 1935. Up to then it was just a muck road in wet weather. The completion of the transcontinental telegraph in October 1861 made the Pony Express obsolete.
So, those were Mormon Crickets you saw. You're suppose to report any infestations of them so they can decrease their population so they don't get out of hand. I think I'll keep one of those live catch mouse traps on board in case I were to get any little visitors. Loved your lonely road trip. Good try with the giant burger. I'm enjoying your photos on Instagram, can't wait for the Alaska videos. Have a great week ahead, take care
Love your videos. Just a note. The Lincoln Highway was built about 50 years after the demise of the pony express. I believe it was the telegraph that made the pony express obsolete. Looking forward to your next video.
Just a heads up, Yosemite gets PACKED during the summer. If you sleep outside the park, you have to leave really early because the parking lots inside the park fill up really fast. It gets refrigerator cool when you're near the falls, so bring a sweater.
Ewww, squished locust road. Chris's comment won the internet for me today "It's got a lovely sort of country American feel. Liquor store, saloon . . . pizza restaurant, another little bar." I laughed out loud. That's pretty much every little American town I've ever driven through. Great stuff. Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Safe travels!!
You two make it so fun to watch, as you're so passionate about your travels. As an American, I've not gone to as many places as you. I'll live vicariously though through you. Safe travels my friends.
Looks like your route will bypass Wyoming (Yellowstone National Park, which will probably still be closed due to flooding) and South Dakota (MT Rushmore, CrazyHorse Memorial the Blackhills and Badlands National Park). You do have Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota…which has smaller „badlands“. Plenty of wild horses, Buffalo and antelope. And the best thing is that it‘s located right off the interstate in Medora North Dakota. Safe travels…Cheers
Just a suggestion, though you may already be aware of this--when you drive the northern highway into Alaska, I would recommend looking into some protection against the flies/flying insects (I hope that your van has screens that can attach to your panel door).
I agree bug spray is a must in summer. Also, plan on a chipped windscreen, wearing out your tires, and bring along a least 2 mounted ( on rims) spare tires. Have fun ??
Hi guys, just watched the lonely road episode. Its looks beautifully isolated. I'm in hospital just outside of Amsterdam having treatment for lung cancer. I sent a message a little while ago snd you replied with a heart warming message. Thank you for the lovely escapism. Much needed during these difficult times. Keep up the excellent work. Love and hugs. Miles.xx
Hi Miles - sending best wishes and hugs - We are in Alaska now and it is EPIC !! woo hoo - Lots more fun to come and we are super excited to take you there xx Love Marianne and Chris xx
I have seen vehicles in the USA where a mouse has chewed some of the electrical wiring. So get rid of the lickle varment asap. I think it is a quite interesting long road, enough scenery for me.
A bit of information that most people are not aware of with regard to Nevada, this western state has vast deposits of Lithium ore. As you might know Lithium is used in batteries for cameras, iphones, laptop computers and hybrid/electric vehicles. Also, Nevada has one of the largest gold mines in the country near Winnemucca, Nevada!
This was an amazing drive. The white sandy areas your saw would be white Allaline silt. Ancient lake beds call playa. A couple of years or so ago my son took me to Nevada. We had 12 days living on the playa in the Black Rock Desert at Burning Man. Words fail to describe the experience. But standing on the playa in the dawn of the day before most people arrive. A memory of a life time. Nothing, nothing near like it in New Zealand!
Lots of love & regards from the Himalayas (india).its is such a pleasure to see a loving couple having such a wonderful adventure. We are enjoying thoroughly with you.
Thank you for all your hard work creating this incredible content! Can’t wait to see Alaska. You’re amazing people ❤️ Living life to the absolute fullest and are a great inspiration
I'm originally from San Francisco, California (am now living in London UK with my wife!) If you're planning to visit Yosemite National Park, on the way towards San Fran is a place called Manteca which is essentially in the middle of the state, (where we both lived for years with my father before he retired back to australia!) Within the city is a famous place to visit called Bass Pro Shops, (it's anything to do with fishing, camping, sports gear, the place is quite interesting to visit & has a lot of little things you wouldn't necessarily expect, even a vat full of fish & stuffed animals... bears, wolves, foxes etc... it has everything, boats, shoes, shirts, jackets...) there is also a nice place to eat nearby called Red Robin & a cinema, (might be the perfect opportunity for you 2 to experience an american movie theatre with Maverick or Jurrasic Park!) I'll send you guys off an e-mail as there are a few places my wife & I can recommend! Cheers! :-)
Yes, in California's Manteca, I have been to that Bass Pro Shop, as well to many Bass Pro shops across the US. Many do have nearby Red Robin's & Movie lounge theater that are also serving lunch & dinner meals, while watching a movie. Best Bass Pro Shop is inside a Pyramid 3 or 4 story structure on the shoreline of the Mississippi in Memphis TN.(Elvis Country)!
Small world... my Aunt & Uncle and their oldest son lived in Manteca, CA, and I was lucky enough to visit her back in 1981. Manteca is a beautiful area acres and acres of beautiful farmland... I was impressed. Close enough to San Francisco, Yosemite Park, and the Cadaverous County Big Trees Park as well!
That burger looked amazing, but I would have struggled to eat a quarter of it. I love those types of roads and the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere. That in itself is a point of interest. You guys are making us want to head back to the USA. Hopefully next year!
HWY 50 WARNING, don't do what I did, Traveling the loneliest road late at night! Repeat "Do Not Travel Late at Night"!? I did this in reverse, started in Carson City (lived there a year), finding the Casinos open 24/7, but the gas pumps are shut down in towns after 10/11PM. I saw less than handful of vehicles the whole 400 + miles. At one point on vlog, Chris mentioned a small 🦌 deer crossed Infront of Trudy. For my late night driving, I did not see until it was too late up a Mountain pass, I hit an antelope. It was over a hour, when a car coming in the opposite direction, slowed down and stopped to help pull the antelope off the road. He was a doctor, and followed me to Ely, making sure my car made it alright. The next morning, my car was towed to Salt Lake City, where it took 3 weeks to be properly repaired. Everything, mentioned in this vlog is totally true driving the loniest road in America (grasshoppers buggy, etc). While living in Nevada I got onset Asthma really bad while living there. Therefore, I had to leave the state for health reasons. Never had any type of Asthma before Nevada, or since then. Oh growing up in the country with dense forests, we did in the fall had mice wanting to enter buildings for warmth, out of the cold. So we, would fill a mouse traps with cheese 🧀. Never have I trapped a mouse with chocolate? Wishing best travels ahead?👍🚐🌞
I have been loving your journey across America, you two are so funny! As for the crickets we have it here in Texas to ! Some years not as bad as others! They just seem to appear an they will cover store fronts for weeks, I must admit it is really smelly an gross when it happens because there are literally thousands of them an with cars running over them there are smelly cricket remains everywhere! LOL.
America is just like Australia. Lots of different landscapes and long roads. We drive to the nearest city occasionally, A tidy 1100kms. The Nullarbor is a cool 2000kms, with a straight stretch of 143km without a bend. Safe travels.
Lol, I’m learning a lot about the United States from you! I grew up in Nevada and lived in Carson City for a couple of years. Never heard of America’s loneliest road but there is a lot of open space in Utah and Nevada….
Wait til you get to the Oregon Coast! I found you guys through Mr and Mrs Adventure and have been watching all of your vlogs. I agree I learn more about the US from foreigners! Keep up the good work.
You guys are hilarious,.God bless your heart .Mice are known to detect human scent and they don't take the bait. So next time scoop the peanut butter with a spoon and place it in the trap .All the best !BTW Happy fathers day .
What an amazing journey you are having. So interesting. Can you give me the recipe for your fried rice. It looked yummy. Something else to try cooking in the van, once it arrives……..
Love your travels! We moved to Nevada from England several years ago. Great to see you enjoying our State. I grew up in Australia and have traveled coast to coast. I went to England to work and see relatives and stayed. We traveled all through Europe. Great to see such a lovely couple who enjoy each other and travel so much. On the Pony Express, it went broke! The telegraph came to the West in 1861, and then the coast to coast train in 1868. The train was the main means of travel until the Lincoln and other highways were paved after the WW1. If you come back Stateside we would love to show you around our part of Nevada, or meet in the North at Virginia City! Virginia City is the American West!
Oh, yes, the crickets! I encountered them once, as well. Very creepy! There were thousands of them.....I did not stop to check them out! I was afraid they might jump onto/into my RV!
Thanks Marianne and Chris, I think you have answered our question about diesel filling, looks like our 2019 Ford Ranger filler is compatible. Also lots of great route planning ideas. US embassy B2 visa appointment next Thursday, fingers crossed, especially as there is a rail and underground strike that very day!
Highway 50 across Nevada is my favorite highway. I have traveled it (both directions) multiple times as I travel full time in a Class C RV. In fact, I'll be driving it headed east sometime over the next few days. Also, a couple of years ago, I too had a "mouse in the house"! You were much more humane than I was, however.
There used to be a few places in the West Midlands that had food challenges. Mad O'Rourkes spring to mind with their Desperate Dan pies. That burger looked tasty but it really was too big. Whenever I see the roads in America (I watch some nomad channels), I often wonder if the Romans got there before us with their long straight roads.
I’ve driven that route 2 times. If you do it, make sure you stop to get gas every chance you get. There are some stretches that are hundreds of miles between gas stations. If you break down, you are waiting a long time for any help, so bring some basic survival type of supplies (lots of water, food, shelter outside of the vehicle, sun protection, and wildly varying weather). Oh, and watch out for low flying military aircraft. They like to use cars on that highway as “virtual practice targets”. Ask me how I know. 😂
Wow so love watching you two and being as adventurous as you are is breathtaking. I live in the US and have never been there, that burger alone is worth the trip!
Some great rock scenery along that road highlighted even more by the blue sky and that restaurant in the middle of nowhere really was something else!! I remember some years ago in Poland, a van overtaking me and the entire passenger side was caved in, window smashed plus part of the windscreen. It was streaked with blood all over the damaged area and down the side of the van and as it was along a forest road I knew immediately he'd been hit by a deer tho' obviously a fully grown one. I remember feeling relieved it hadn't been me as my van was RHD.
That was certainly a long and lonely stretch of road. It will be exciting to see your next video trip to Yosemite. I was born and lived in Merced California til I was 13 yrs old. My grandparents lived in Mariposa, which is considered the Gateway to Yosemite. So just about every time we visited them we also went to Yosemite. Even though I live in Washington State, since 1967, I still consider Yosemite as my backyard. Lovely place to be.
Just found your channel and am enjoying your trip. I get a kick out of you driving on the right side of your vehicle. See you on your next episode. From Central Oklahoma.
Middle Gate station is extremely haunted. Twin Paranormal on TH-cam did an investigation there and its one of their best episodes yet. Didn't know they made massive burgers though, looks so good.
It looks like you could have come across a big cicada hatching. Those things just spent 13 or 17 years buried in the ground as a grub. Love seeing the States thru your eyes! Thanks for bringing us along. 😊
Dear Marienne and Chris .. my suggestion is for the get rid of mouse is have a cat in your trudy:-) it will be no escaping from the cat:-))) have a nice trip good people ( Turkish American guy )
Loved Chris breaking into a Siouxsie rendition! Had to explain the segue path to Mrs. P. of how one gets from antler arch to "Peek-a-boo". 😆😆 For the Brits reading this, the backwards peace sign only counts out the side windows while overtaking other cars because of the awkward positions needed to do it palms-out. 🤣🤣 Most of us Americans won't know what flicking Vs means, but it's probably universal that any back-handed hand gesture feels rude when face to face! 🤣🤣 Afraid I have to correct your history lesson on the Pony Express -- it was the completion of the transcontinental telegraph line that made it unprofitable (if it ever was), and then then the Transcontinental Railroad that made it obsolete. The Lincoln Highway was 50 years later. Nothing pekes my curiousity like a bunch of people saying a place has "no points of interest." It's so rare to find a spot outdoors that is *absolutely silent*. And I love the little towns dotted along state highways. ❤️❤️😎👍xx
Enjoying u'r vids and travels. Its wet windy and cold here by the banks of Loughree Hodson Bay Athlone Ireland. Big drop in temperature here from 25oc mid week to 10oc or less now. Fuel now €2.09lt to €2.20lt for diesel here and rise'n. 😁😂
Those are Mormon crickets and they are not harmful to humans, the eat each other many times. They can make the road slick if a lot of the swarm is killed on the road by a cars or trucks in front of you.
Road trip Marker on your Midwest List, needs to be Wisconsin! SUMMER months, has lots of ethnic festivals. You will be in the Dairy State, with lots of Custard ice cream, Cheeses, German Bratwurst ,variety of Beer 🍻. & Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee's & Lake Michigan. There is lots to do all over the state, with green rolling hills, lakes and many college towns/cities From Door County on Northern part of the state, down to Wisconsin Dells,. state Capitol of Madison, Spring Green, New Glarus & New London too.!
You should get a TSD card. Good at Love’s, flying J, Pilot and TA truck stops. It will save you quite a bit on diesel when you fill up. I think it is good anywhere including the ones in Canada. Great video. That is on my bucket list to do.
400 miles can easily be done in a few hours. I drive 450 after working a 12.5 hour shift in order to get home. It takes about 6-7 hours depending on the speed limits and traffic.
Love you guys. Im in San Felipe Baja on Sea of Cortez near the beach. You can park at my house if you want, but there are tons of camping spots on the beach. M
Americas long roads are beautiful in their own way, you have time to reflect and quite frankly take a break from the hustle and bustle of city driving, talk about boondocks but not recommended to drive them alone, you can easily fall asleep, the arrow on the fed ex vehicles stands for speed and accuracy, not many know it’s there, the new logo was created when they shortened their name from federal express to Fed Ex.
I just found your channel today! I see that you're going to be passing through my city here in Lethbridge, Alberta on your way to Alaska. I've been to 42 states and would say that the loneliest road would be in Montana where we drove for over two hours without seeing another person
I don’t know where on your trip to Yosemite you are currently. I’ve only ever drove highway 108 over to Sonora but that is one of my favorite drives in the parts of the US I’ve driven. When you cross the pass on either 108 or 120 from Nevada watch your brakes, pull over if someone is tailgating you. Brakes can really overheat. If you take 108 then you can go to the quaint towns like Columbia (old west town, little house on the prairie was filmed here). Then take Highway 49 to Highway 120 to Yosemite. Enjoy your drive all of that area is just beautiful. Also the drive on highway 50 then along Lake Tahoe up to Emerald Bay is a must see. Also one the scariest roads most Northern Californians think of is Highway 50 coming down from the pass into South Lake Tahoe.

Never noticed the FedEx arrow myself. Learn something new every day!

... and the Iron Horse.
and I almost forgot, the stagecoach or Wells Fargo!
Ah that makes more sense than it running for only a year.
Just a heads up, Yosemite gets PACKED during the summer. If you sleep outside the park, you have to leave really early because the parking lots inside the park fill up really fast. It gets refrigerator cool when you're near the falls, so bring a sweater.
That burger was a massive whooper fab video guys thank you both for sharing xx
Great trip. Love to hear the sound of your voices. Prayers for a continued safe and trouble free journey.
Ewww, squished locust road. Chris's comment won the internet for me today "It's got a lovely sort of country American feel. Liquor store, saloon . . . pizza restaurant, another little bar." Thanks Holly - welcome to the travel club !!
I'm fascinated by this trip. I love that I am seeing a lot of things I have yet to see (and saving them on my google maps for future trip planning)!
Thanks for taking me on the Loneliest Road. I revel in miles of blue and brown. Be well and drive safely.
Brought back memories, we travelled this road in May this year.
Have fun ??
Citronella works great!
Thank you everyone for your heart warming replies. They have given me a much needed lift. Thoughts and prayers to all. Xx
Peppermint oil spread on kitchen shelves etc gets rid of mice. They don’t like the smell.

As always a very entertaining episode. Didn't expect the loneliest road to be so fun to watch ^ ^
oh my goodness! and just imagine BUILDING that road!
This was an amazing drive. The white sandy areas your saw would be white Allaline silt. Ancient lake beds call playa.

Fantastic Video as Always Guys 👌. "Bugs in the Road"😱!!! OMG that Burger. Thanks So Much.🥰☘

The crickets are colloquially known as 'Mormon crickets'. They don't have wings.
A farmer's nightmare!
I believe that at certain times of the year they will eat through crops very fast!

Frightening road. I would not feel comfortable on that road. Even if I get a chance to visit by car, I will never do that :))
You are brave guys. ✌🏻
Love the road, the views, cloudscapes 👍🙏❤️
Thank you Ineke 🌺
You two are Awesome! Keep up the great work! It all looks so Gorgeous!
I've got to sit down for it later on to rewatch it to count how many times you said loneliest road 😂
Enjoyed rewatching the video :) the count was a bit disappointing 😂 counted 19
That was certainly a long and lonely stretch of road. It will be exciting to see your next video trip to Yosemite. I was born and lived in Merced California til I was 13 yrs old. My grandparents lived in Mariposa, which is considered the Gateway to Yosemite. So just about every time we visited them we also went to Yosemite. Even though I live in Washington State, since 1967, I still consider Yosemite as my backyard. Lovely place to be.
I am glad you kept the baby deer off camera, as I will scream out loud worrying about hitting an animal. 🤩
Love the bar! What fun
Another wonderful video. You are sooo brave to be driving all these roads. Wishing you continued safe travels. 👍❤️
Thank you so much! 🌺
Just found your channel and am enjoying your trip. I get a kick out of you driving on the right side of your vehicle. See you on your next episode. From Central Oklahoma.
Hi Janet !! Thanks
Middle Gate station is extremely haunted. Twin Paranormal on TH-cam did an investigation there and its one of their best episodes yet. Didn't know they made massive burgers though, looks so good.
FedEx speed, accuracy, persistence in pursuit of goals, and the quest for perfection. 😊
I've been to those charcoal ovens. Cool place!
Got to watch out for animals on the road. The further north the more you will see. See one maybe more coming you can’t see. Stay safe and happy 😃
It looks like you could have come across a big cicada hatching. Those things just spent 13 or 17 years buried in the ground as a grub. Love seeing the States thru your eyes! Thanks for bringing us along. 😊
They were crazy here in SC and I’m new to the area… little aliens for sure
Those are Mormon cricket swarm. Not dangerous, but can make the road slick when enough is run over.
@@toddramsay977 I have never seen those kind before!!! Thanks for letting us know. :-)
Such a shame that you will miss Highway 1. One of the most beautiful and kinda scary drives in the US...and I've driven all over the States.
Hi - don't worry we will be doing some of it - but not filming all of it as we are heading to Alaska 🙌🌺
Dear Marienne and Chris .. my suggestion is for the get rid of mouse is have a cat in your trudy:-) it will be no escaping from the cat:-))) have a nice trip good people ( Turkish American guy )
Been there, done that...... an amazing adventure :)
Man. I've missed so many vids, will have to try catch up. Safe travels. ❤
Fantastic !!
WOW! It's certainly the most beautiful experience to live on the roads of the USA! 😎😎😎
Loved Chris breaking into a Siouxsie rendition! Had to explain the segue path to Mrs. P. of how one gets from antler arch to "Peek-a-boo". 😆😆
For the Brits reading this, the backwards peace sign only counts out the side windows while overtaking other cars because of the awkward positions needed to do it palms-out. 🤣🤣 Most of us Americans won't know what flicking Vs means, but it's probably universal that any back-handed hand gesture feels rude when face to face! 🤣🤣
Afraid I have to correct your history lesson on the Pony Express -- it was the completion of the transcontinental telegraph line that made it unprofitable (if it ever was), and then then the Transcontinental Railroad that made it obsolete. The Lincoln Highway was 50 years later.
Nothing pekes my curiousity like a bunch of people saying a place has "no points of interest." It's so rare to find a spot outdoors that is *absolutely silent*. And I love the little towns dotted along state highways. ❤️❤️😎👍xx
Thank you so much for the history lesson - we appreciate you and your appreciation 🌺🙌💜
I just knocked that road off on my motorcycle last week in one day. Got my booked stamped at most of the little towns along the way.
Lol. Were they speaking of Austin, Tx? 😂.
Wowzers burger!! Amazing road, we experienced similar. How do they survive, what do they do for work etc? Take care x
You really have to love to drive to be in this lifestyle.
You guys are amazing . Loving it. Xx
i love the special k nickname 😂 but it was super cool being able to meet you guys
You are indeed all special K !! Thanks again and it was a pleasure to meet you all 🌺🙌
Enjoying u'r vids and travels. Its wet windy and cold here by the banks of Loughree Hodson Bay Athlone Ireland. Big drop in temperature here from 25oc mid week to 10oc or less now. Fuel now €2.09lt to €2.20lt for diesel here and rise'n. 😁😂
Holy Moly !! Sending some sun from here ... M xx
Welcome to Nevada...I love my state!
Those are Mormon crickets and they are not harmful to humans, the eat each other many times. They can make the road slick if a lot of the swarm is killed on the road by a cars or trucks in front of you.
safe travels!
Those black crickets are called Mormon crickets that invade farmland every few years. Horrible damage to plant life.
Diesel prices gotta be killing yall!
They are British, used to paying double the US price.
Looks like you coming near where I live when you get to illinios. Lots to do in wisconsin.
Looking at there route on this video they take 94 all the way thru. Hopefully stop in milwaukee for sobelmans big bloody mary or something like that.
So interesting place, I enjoyed.👍✌️🤗🍿
You should get a TSD card. Good at Love’s, flying J, Pilot and TA truck stops. It will save you quite a bit on diesel when you fill up. I think it is good anywhere including the ones in Canada. Great video. That is on my bucket list to do.
Thanks for the tip Todd 🌺🙌
400 miles can easily be done in a few hours. I drive 450 after working a 12.5 hour shift in order to get home. It takes about 6-7 hours depending on the speed limits and traffic.
What do you listen too on the long journeys? music, podcasts, audio books or just chat
Mainly Chat / listen to music ...
Awesome, spectacular and amazing 😻
Love you guys. Im in San Felipe Baja on Sea of Cortez near the beach. You can park at my house if you want, but there are tons of camping spots on the beach. M
Thank you !
Sounds great! We love those lonely roads !! Thanks for the tip 👍
What a beautiful drive, did you find out what the bugs were? It looked pretty gruesome with the red tyre tracks!
Hi Jane - yes they are Mormon crickets 🙌
@@TREADtheglobe Was it normal for them to be so many?
Love watching you both!!! 💕
😊 thank you
Hey guys, the ✌️ sign is your fingers out towards the other person. And no flick.
Congrats on surviving the loneliest road! Can't wait to see what comes next ☺️👍
Thank you! 😁
Good morning 🙏 missed yall lol
They must have known the road was coming, so was the pony express started to communicate with the people working on building the road?
Yes - that is probably it
The Ponderosa is near by near Lake Tahoe!
marrianne and chris eline emeğine sağlık bu güzel vlog için kolay gelsin hayırlı işler....👍👍👍👍
You are great
Stunning driving. I was expecting a UFO 🛸 or two though 😁. Big hugs xx
Hwy 50 actually goes from California to the Atlantic Ocean, but the Eastern side it runs concurrent with I-70
I don’t know where on your trip to Yosemite you are currently.
