this, although I am definitely warming to trends vids as a cautionary tale. If it's trendy now, it will be *dated* in five years' time. Do I really love it enough to be okay with that?
Hahaha, love this video! Only thing I’d add is that indoor swings are a centuries-old tradition in South Asia (they’re called jhoolas). Adults and children just sit in them, banter, have chai, swaying very very mildly (far from playground style playing). And they’re very ornate and heavy and usually in a covered balcony or porch. They’re awesome!
Is it an indoor swing if it's on a covered balcony or porch? It seems then you have at least one side open to the outdoors. Porch swings are popular in hot places to avoid the stifling indoors until it cools down at night.
Brown to me depends on whether it is natural or paint. Natural browns like wood and leather are awesome. Unnatural browns like paint and plastic are loathsome.
Your point about commercial spaces bleeding into residential is spot on. I remember all those damned industrial style gastro pubs with overpriced hamburgers in downtown spaces with lead pipes, concrete, and Edison bulbs, and it wasn’t too long for those items to make it into people’s homes in the suburbs
Nick when you talk about specific styles like Art Deco, it would be really handy if you had a series of vids about each of the different named styles - like an expanded version of the 50 Interior Design Styles Explained in 25 Minutes, but a full vid exploring each one in depth - so you could link that vid in the description and people who want to know more can watch that next. It's me. I'm people who want to know more. Also I hope you're having a lovely holiday season, with just the right amount of time with people you want to spend time with.
Nothing gets a morning going like a good snark from Nick. Merry Christmas Nick in Glasgow. What a super place to spend Christmas, hope you are having a great time.
In the midwest, unless it was after the 80s, most had the farmhouse sinks & whitewashed walls or else it was that ugly, tacky brown & gold wallpaper trend from the 70s. A couple still had that weird, red wallpaper & I forget when that's from offhand.
My niece had a huge slide in her office (startup of course) in San Diego a few years ago. She said that after one time using it, they were all completely over it! Brown is fugly unless it's on wood. I lived through the 70s brown interiors and nope! Thanks for this Christmas gift dropping while you're not even in country! Merry HoHo!🎉🤶🎄
Oh my God I wanted an indoor swing so bad when I was a kid! There was this amazing house in our neighborhood that was designed and built by the Swedish father of a girl I knew. It had atrium ceilings and quirky blonde wood nooks and oddly shaped rooms...and a huge indoor swing hanging from the beams in the middle of the house. It was sooo cool.
Nick! So glad to see some modern cottagecore representation…I think? I’m one of the weird gays that fled to the countryside to fix up a hovel and live the agrarian fantasy. I would be delighted if you made a little inspo video for us on how to style a small country house because the struggle is real to find any inspiration that isn’t modern farmhouse or some sort of 1920’s cosplay situation. Happy Holidays to you!
I live in a little residential suburb in California. We grow our food, we have sheep and chickens. My son is a culinary and medicinal mushroom farmer. We spent 2020 feeding our friends and neighbors and bartering our goods with neighbors for materials to build a new barn and corral. Cottagecore really cracks me up!
Thank you, St Nick, for our Christmas gift video. We had a house in the 70s that had an atrium in the center, open through the roof with sliding doors on 3 sides. It had a definite different vibe as a home, in a good way. We did end up screening across the top for bug/critter control (it was Florida).
When I sold my mom's 3000 sqft house, I kept a bunch of table/stand alone lamps. (10 in storage, 3 in the room I rented immediately after I moved. Then, I bought and moved into a camper which I LOVE. My problem... Where am I putting 13 lamps?!? 🤣
You are right on everything except the secret passageway! I would love one (but I live in a two bedroom condo). Totally impractical but would be so fun. Yes, I can be a bit odd.
We have three different spots in our basement ceiling that we rotate various swings, haha! But for us it’s because of our autistic child and him needing the movement, I would agree with Nick about this not being a trend. I definitely didn’t do it as a design choice. Love the channel!
The indoor swings you showed were abysmal. But my latest visit to home goods has me thinking if they are taking inspiration from South Asian or indian homes. We have indoor swings or egg chair swings. Given that they have now started to carry so much made in India or that SA style of products i think they are definitely taking inspiration from there.
It's funny how "vibrant maximalism" sounds so much more sophisticated that "busy clutter" or "clashy gaudy," or even "kindergarten chic"? You can add about a thousand bucks to the price tag of anything that ends with an "ism."
What a fun way to spend Christmas Eve afternoon waiting for my son and two grandkits...yes...kittens to arrive..thanks Nick. I hope that you're having fun in Scotland with the Glaswegians.
I’ve got secret doors and rooms and planning a passageway. They are not actually intended to be fun but they are. Just knowing I have them is fun. I don’t use them every day-as in activate the entrances, but that is why we have them.
I agree about curved sofas. You need a large room for them to work. Had a client who bought a curved sofa/sectional and was trying to put it in a long and narrow room. I told her that it wasn't going to work and to send it back. She got a regular sofa and chairs that worked with the room dimensions better. Hard lesson to learn.
I actually moved in 2022 to a former farmhouse :) No goats, but large garden yes, plenty of fruittrees etc. Not quite cottagecore but close enough I guess.
Oh, Nick. Thank you. You are an absolute treasure. You should be on prescription as a mood-booster. My cheeks are sore laughing about the goats (the cheeks on my face - get your mind out of the gutter). Watching from France.
None of it really sounded "new"; besides, what really works in our homes is what makes us feel happy, cozy and just right for us. Enjoyed your take on it all, though, as always. Merry Christmas!

Bad photo accompaniments, too, like huge rooms for "small room" issues. Also, suggestions that are way expensive.
At some point in time I will have a library in which walking through a Narnian wardrobe to get to said library will be a must. I will also have a Hobbit themed bedroom (already have the bed) in which my future grandkids can spend the night in. My office will have elements of Elrond's library too. I want a cottage with whimsy where the front entryway mimics a forest and the back entrance pays homage to a night sky with stars that twinkle along the ceiling. I have no need for designer homes with no sense of imagination within them.
Decorating with brown is still better than decorating with beige. Love the Benjamin Moore "Cinnamon Slate". "I can't go back to all those mirrored surfaces, you guys" 🤣🤣🤣. Totally agree. Also, keeping up with cleaning them 😓. Is vibrant maximalism the same as extreme maximalism?
Autistic person here as well, Having a swing would make me feel sick as I do suffer from motion sickness. A good compromise would be an office chair as you can swing around by swivelling the chair but not get to motion sick plus you can move it where you need it or buy multiple rather than being stuck with a fixed element that can't be moved easily
@@montetiger866reading this comment made me realize how much I love swivelling in my office chair. I find a reason to sit at my desk each day in the afternoon and after dinner when I need to relax. I never made the connection before.
We had 20 ceilings in the house we built and lived in for 43 years. We had a swing and everyone loved it. We also had a huge o ring in our floor and we would have waterski show practice at our home in the winter with 200 people every Sunday afternoon and night. We would build 4 high pyramids in our living room. We are an all volunteer group and we won The National Water Ski Show Championship in 1991. So, many homes have reasons to have such high ceilings and swings, just for the fun of it all. My husband wanted to put in a fireman pole from the floor above, but I said that it would be too far for the kids to fall. Then he wanted to put in a slid from the living room to the river. I wasn’t really big on that either. But he did build a big ice skating rink just off of the living room so everyone could ice skate and drink hot chocolate. Live the life you can and do cooky things. I hope that you put something fun in your new home. I think you are honest, quirky and fun, so you need something fun in your home.
Every time I turn on my pot lights that I replaced with grow bulbs because I live in a semi and get zero natural sunlight for my plants a tiny piece of Nick’s heart grows colder.
I like the Gwyneth chair for a few reasons: 1) great size - not too big, not too small; 2) I do like the fabric (I don't own any boucle furniture or accessories and it would go well in my home; 3) it swivels, doesn't it? I love that option - I could be wrong here but I always thought that was possibly the biggest selling point of the chair.
17:20 OMG 😂😂😂😂 I'm laughing my butt off, because I DO live in a suburb of Atlanta. And, coincidentally, a quarter mile from my home was a former GOAT farm until last year when D.R. Horton started building townhomes on those 40 acres! (The last remaining farm in the area)

I was aghast by the brown usage and selections that were permeating my Home when I purchased it. The previous owner clearly loved brown and I LOATHE it. We bought a home last year that had the fugliest brown painted walls in the kitchen and dining area. That got painted over the day after we closed, before we moved in lol.
Porch swing- yeah, swing in a sun room- maybe, but definitely not inside the house. I hate the gray trend. I'm also not a fan of all white everything. What is a "trend"? Is it always something new that seems to be gaining traction? If so, what level of adoption constitutes a trend? If 10% of people adopt a trend, does that make the other 90% the bigger trend? Trending videos seem to be the ones getting the most views. Or do "trends lists" predict what WILL become the next trend? So, if a design element shows up in two or more runway shows, is that a trend? Or is "trend" defined by the context of the trend setter? When a design element shows up at Crate and Barrel, is it more of a trend? If a trend shows up at IKEA, is it more of a trend or less of a trend? And if you see a trend at Walmart, is that a sign that it's on its way out? Is there a timeline of growth, peak and decline? Are "trends lists" really about predicting trends? This channel seems to lean into the fun of predictions and the observation of our perceptions and surprises. And I love that you bring it all back to what is and what isn't good design. Well Done.
"I love talking about trends; you love hearing about trends..." No, Nick, we love hearing you be snarky about other people's poor choices. 😂

Yeah, I'm taking out all the spotlights from the living spaces in the house I've just bought. I'm not living in a shop. Fine in the kitchen.

in india its actually pretty common to have a swing in the house, especially on verandahs and in gardens
(Reddish) Brown is a much better neutral than white or grey. Baby poop green is a great neutral too.

Well Done.
I have wanted an indoor swing since I saw it in a house "back home". It's something that will always be in my home lol
