      Question, once you achieve your goal for the grass, do you repeat this repeat this process every year

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty much Shawn. Though keep in mind that as the soil and turf improve, it takes less drastic work to get a good result. You should still apply your pre-emergent and fertilizer to feed the lawn but really the most important thing is consistent mowing. If you think about it, fertilizer application happens once per month if you're seriously hardcore. Yet you mow a few times per week. So it's important to make sure the thing that you're doing very frequently is correct as possible. 👍😎

    First person I seen on TH-cam actually using lebanon products. That stuff rules and it’s really really really good. For those who haven’t used it before you won’t be disappointed at all.

      Thanks Sergio. I'm a big fan of their products. Perhaps most TH-camrs don't recommend/use Lebanon Turf because not available on Amazon or most other online retailers. I just want the best tool for that job that's reasonably accessible. I can't say anything negative about Lebanon Turf's products. They create amazing fertilizers.

    Another informative video Ron! I used Milorganite for the first time about two weeks ago, and I am thoroughly impressed. My lawn was started to show signs of losing its green, but wasn’t ready for a full fertilizer app. Someone suggested putting down Milo at 1/2 bag rate and two weeks later she is a supreme green even darker than before! Good stuff!

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Fantastic stuff Jason. I'm so glad that you're getting good results with the product. It's not the cheapest but it does come through on the green lawn action. 😎With soil temps where they are, you should see results relatively quickly for Milo. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

    I live in southwest Mississippi. A good way to have green grass of any variety is to get some RAIN! We are extremely dry right now, August 28, ‘24. I do not have an irrigation system, and hoses and sprinklers aren’t very effective in a large yard. Just had a little showers a while ago, but that will be only a drop in the bucket!

      @@RonHenry Thanks for replying. I watch a lot of lawn videos but they have Kentucky Bluegrass, etc. I live in Atlanta (neighborhood and grass much like yours) and my yard used to look great. Now I keep going through yard company after yard company (had to let another one go yesterday) because their quality is awful. I am now taking the step of doing it myself for quality control. While I have you (I appreciate it again) what is a great reel mower? I am looking at swordsman but it is very expensive. If I have to I will, but I would love a top quality mower a little less expensive if possible. Any thoughts? Thanks so much again!

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve not personally used a Swordsman but the people that have them seem to really like the. The 2 powered reel mowers I have experience with are the Tru-Cut and Toro Greensmaster. Both are excellent. Depending on the kinds of obstacles you have, the Tru Cut is the easier of the 2 to live with. The Greensmaster produces the superior cut. Expect to pay 650 - 1000 for a preowned Tru Cut. The GM can be anywhere from 1500 - 4000 preowned depending on age and condition. A quality reel mower is the best investment you can make for your lawn.

    Nicely stated Ron. It's vital for correct plant nutrition that all necessary major, minor and micro elements be available for plant growth. We can agree that N,P, K and Iron are the ones commonly addressed. What about the others? Here is an example. How many realize that Magnesium is the central atom of the chlorophyll molecule? No Mg = no chlorophyll = no green. Think about it.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great point Richard. It should have went into a bit more detail on the micronutrients. I tried to make it fairly easy for a newbie to follow and get good results. I’ll have to make a deeper dive video. 😎

      @richardgleason5953 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RonHenry I wasn't implying that you weren't thorough. All I meant was to show the importance of all elements... the only difference being the amounts required.

      Hi Laura. It depends on how much time you have and the kind of grass you have. You have to mow twice per week to have a really good looking lawn. Grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia look better when mowed under 2". Grasses like Fescus and St. Augustine should be mowed at 3" or taller. Depends on your grass.

      Hi Otta. Bermuda only needs around 1 inch of water per week. That water can come from either rain or your irrigation. Overwatering can cause problems in the lawn so we definitely don't want to do that. I have a video here on watering that you'll probably find useful: th-cam.com/video/8WV3QGXcwbU/w-d-xo.html It sounds like you've fertilized and applied some weed killer so the next thing we need to do is increase your mowing. That will really help the grass improve. Try this. Try mowing once per week instead of every 15 days and report back. I guarantee it will start looking better. If you wait until the grass looks like it needs to be mowed, you waited too long. Twice per week is best but in your case let’s start with weekly mowing.

    Love your channel and the information you provide. Im from Alabama and back in the day i had a beautiful yard but kids came along and my ability to stay on top of the yard work and maintenance fell by the wayside. That said this summer (really late spring) i decided to get back at it and so far ive had good results. My biggest issue right now is tall lumping fescue patches in my yard and I'm not 100% sure the best way and time to try to deal with that. My grass type is Bermuda if that matters...any suggestions? Again love your channel, your videos are succinct, full of information and you obviously know your stuff as your lawn is beautiful. Stay safe and well!

      Hi Brandon. I totally hear you about life getting in the way. Congrats on deciding to spend more time in the lawn. 👍As far as the Fescue mixed in with the Bermuda, how much are we talking? Is it a small enough amount that you can simply pull them. I'd have to check but ther might be a herbicide that would target tall fescue while not harming Bermuda. I'd really prefer to not use herbicides though if at all possible. Thanks for the kind words and for watching the content. I really appreciate it. Lawn care is definitely a labor of love. 😎👍

      @@RonHenry So my yard is probably around 5k square feet and most of the issue/concern is in my front yard. I have some smaller patches I could definitely just dig up but i do have some larger more significant areas that digging up does not seem like the best approach. That said I want it gone lol. Just really looking for my best bet to get that done and at the right time of the year if there is one. Obviously I cant fix several years of neglect the first summer back at it but the tall fescue clumps are by far and away the worst part of my lawn and the one thing I'm not so sure how to deal with. Thanks so much for your response!! Have a great day!

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How high are you mowing Brandon? Bermuda thrives on being cut at much lower heights than tall fescue. If you're able to cut at 1.5" or lower, that should encourage growth in the Bermuda while stressing the tall Fescue. For the herbicide route, Tribute Total from Bayer should kill the Fescue while doing minimal damage to the Bermuda. It's not cheap stuff though. Expect to pay between $350 - $400 for a bottle. One bottle treats 2 - 3 acres so with you primarily spot spraying it should last a long time. Either way, I would lower your mowing height to 1.5" regardless of whether you use Tribute or not. Granted doing this successfully will require that your lawn be relatively smooth. Ideally, you also want to use a reel mower to cut it. Hope this helps. 😎👍

      @smk791 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      low rate of Monument 0.35 oz/A will smoke out Fescue in Bermuda. Its expensive but Monument lasts a very long time because you use so little. Cheapest option is in Feb if grass is completely dormant and you get an unusually warm day, blanket spray the bermuda with very low rate glyphosate around 8oz/A that will kill the Fescue and any other weeds in there. Risky but it works.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the advice SMK. So there you go Brandon. You have a second option for getting rid of the Fescue in your lawn. Like SMK, said, just be sure to do this when the Bermuda is dormant so that it's not trying to absorb the herbicide you're putting down.

      It depends Teen Sonic. If you're using PGR, you can get away with applying every 6 - 8 weeks. Without PGR, I'd apply every 10 - 12 weeks or you're likely to end up with excessive top growth. Where your nutrient levels are will dictate the response you get. If you're very low in nitrogen, then you're less likely to run into issues than if your nitrogen levels are already optimal and you're adding a big hit on top of that. So unfortunately the most correct answer is "it depends". 🤓

You could try applying a biochar to help the soil retain a bit more moisture, but I don't think that lack of water is the primary issue you're dealing with. 😟

    Love the videos Ron. Quick question. I just seeded some Blackjack Bermuda. It's coming in decently, but I have crabgrass coming up with it. Should i walk on the new grass to pull up as much crabgrass as possible or just deal with the crabgrass next spring? Thanks

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Heya Coleman. I would pull it if it's really bothering you. With the Blackjack just being overseeded, I'd stay away from applying herbicides if at all possible. There's no harm in pulling the weeds manually. Once the Blackjack grows in more, you can consider putting Spectracide down which targets crabgrass and has a pre-emergent. amzn.to/31Z7s68 Let me know if I can help with anything else.

      @@RonHenry Thanks for the response Ron. Wasn't sure how much walking on new grass would damage it. I know you're very busy, but it shows a lot that you take the time to respond to as many people as you can. That's the best thing about this channel!

      No problem at all Coleman. I look at the comments as a mini forum of sorts so I try to chime in as much as possible. Ideally you want to stay off the new grass as much as you can but once it's more established, there's no harm in walking on it. Bermuda is pretty hardy. That's one of the things I love most about it. Most mistakes are usually a 2 week problem at most. 😎

    Hi Ron! I put Milorganite ↓ over a week ago. I used a Scott's spreader on 12. I have dark green lines all over the lawn. What did I do wrong?

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sheril. It sounds like you didn’t overlap enough on your passes. You can simply make passes on the areas that were missed. In a week or so, the color across the lawn should then be uniform. Let me know if I can help with anything else. 😎👍

    • @sbender9518
      @sbender9518 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RonHenry So should I be spreading like I mow? That kind of overlapping? It says it spreads 5', so I was intentionally not overlapping, trying not to put too much product down. So walk as if I'm mowing? With all spreadable products? Thanks again for the response, Ron.

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@sbender9518 yep just like when you're mowing. Milorganite is a very safe fertilizer so there's little chance of it damaging the grass. This is the same process you'd use when applying any product with a spreader. A slight overlap to ensure even coverage. You didn't hurt anything. Just have to go out and fix. It's no biggie. 👍😎

    Ron-I recently fired Trugreen because my backyard was in terrible condition, but front is nice and green, but the HOA is responsible for it’s care. I applied some Lesco 24-0-11 about a week ago and cut the grass closer to front, but I’m not sure if this is the right product or not. Any suggestions on what direction I should proceed? Doesn’t seem like it’s working and some weeds seem to be growing more than the grass.

    • @RonHenry

      Heya Ken. The best way to know if you're using the correct fertilizer for your lawn, is to get a soil test. www.mysoiltesting.com/shop?aff=11 They not very expensive and is literally one of the best investments you can make in your lawn care program. The Lesco 24-0-11 product is a really good one but without know where you NPK and micronutrient levels are, it might not be enough for your lawn. To get your lawn to thicken up, it's going to take a combination of healthy soil and consistent mowing at the right height. You can do it. :-) Let me know if I can help with anything else. 👍😎
