  • The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a history of controversy. It’s been blamed for not acting fast enough. It’s also been blamed for rushing products to market.
The FDA has a tough job. It regulates a powerful industry with a lot of money - and questionable practices. With American distrust for Big Pharma at an all-time high, the FDA’s role is more important than ever.
This is how the FDA could be doing a better job at protecting Americans from the greed of some pharmaceutical companies.

Wow and I forgot Biden was about to appoint a new manager. Great timing you folks, who knows, your quality reporting just might save some lives and alleviate a lot of suffering. I really appreciate what the guy had to say at the end about the sentiments of some staff at the FDA. And nice to see that clip at the start of Bernie back in the day trying to build public awareness - of the YUGE epidemic of lobbying influence and revolving-door employment rackets.

Quick question that I'm too lazy to research myself: when pegged against other inflationary measures, what was the budget of the FDA over the past 20 years? What was the FDA's funding? When we're expecting these agencies to do their jobs, are we actually giving them the funding to do that?

No one investigated Ventavia. Janet Woodcock head of the FDA has now all her advisory committee all tied to Pfizer. FDA is mostly funded by big pharma. There is a reason why people don't trust. As a pharmacy technician, witnessing the prices people pay everyday to live yet another day for conditions they were born with/didn't ask for. It's criminal watching people pay hundreds for epipens in case of an allergic reaction or blood pressure medications. It is so easy to manipulate this market especially with specific drugs such as xarelto that don't have generics and are price gouged thousands of dollars. People with insurance even still have to fork over a copay of a couple hundred dollars for a months supply. People will pay anything to live another day and pharmaceutical companies take advantage of that.

The fact that lobbying has been behind the approval of a lot of drug treatments (rather than genuine extensive research), not only contradicts a doctors oath to do no harm, but also creates a lot of the mistrust the public has for medicine that could potentially save lives. If all it takes to get a drug on the market is the right price, that contradicts the very nature of the science of the medical field. People become consumers rather than patients. A lot of Martin Shrekli’s out there - most aren’t vain or immature enough to brag about it on public television, but he’s right about capitalism and the medical industry. Especially in the US. A shame really because those companies do actually need money for R&D, but could cut prices if they weren’t spending so much paying exorbitant salaries to cut corners for these shady approval schemes.

It is bad enough if you are in terrible pain. Add getting treated like a junkie or criminal because you need some relief. It is awful. I have a painful open wound on my foot X 3 years. And even though some doctors are too chickenshit to even look under the bandage to see how bad it is, they wont prescribe any painkillers for it. I have wished a horrible painful death on every doctor who has refused to provide the relief available from the modern miracle of medicine and forced me to live like a caveman, writhing and moaning in pain at night in bed. I now suffer with ptsd from the damages and I’m getting the right medication and help now but it’s extremely terrifying that I’ve always been told to trust health professionals and wasn’t warned about bad doctors
I had to get migraine surgery, that’s how severe my allergic reaction was to the medication, I had no history of migraine until given the medication. I’m traumatized af and only 21. This VICE video barely even scratches the surface, and there is one very important thing they completely left out and didn't address - the FDA is underfunded and overworked. If the government funded the FDA properly and adequately instead of having them rely on the payments from drug manufacturers, they'd be much better at what they do, and they're already considered world class - only second to the EU - EC in consumer protection. The FDA was established primarily for public safety, but over the years, big pharma THROUGH the government and politicians have used the FDA to align with their agendas. Lots of republican and conservatives are delusional and think it's political and that only the democrats want to kill everyone - if it were up to Democrats or mainly progressives, the FDA would be adequately funded. Go look into how much Republicans in congress fought against the FDA even becoming a thing. Or that time they made the FDA lose the authority to regulate catfish so their conservative base could sell more fish while neglecting the safety requirements. Or the story about tobacco regulation.
I blame the US government and congress entirely because the FDA wouldn't be what it has become if they didn't politicize it and push drugs through to meet the demands of their lobbyists. The turnover rate at the FDA is insane! A lot of people go in to serve the public then get in and realize they're basically puppets for the people in power and politicians.

I’m an addict in recovery been clean a year and a half now first time I’ve been clean since I first got hooked on oxy after sports injuries at 12 years old the doctors kept feeding it to me even giving me benzos and ambian at the same time (had some childhood trauma and was born with insomnia and adhd ) I’m 23 now done playing sports and finally clean after decade long addiction from legal prescribed oxy , Xanax , sleep pills, and adderall. eventually went to heroin and meth after getting cut off then fent and benzodope. I’m finally clean and working full time but on Medicaid still paying off hospital and rehab bills and not just from the addictions also from multiple different injuries and surgeries and I’m on Medicaid now and they will no longer pay for my combination of meds prescribed by a good trusted doctor that isn’t any opioids, amphetamines, benzos, barbiturates nothing it’s all light and easy and actually helps me but no Medicaid is telling me I need to go back on adderall and they won’t give me my anti inflammatory meds they’re saying I need to take subutex…. 🤔 what ?! They want a kind of recently clean addict to go back on meth in a pill and another opioid well opioid agonist🤦‍♂️ hmmm sounds familiar to when I was a kid tf do we let these people get away with!
