Super video of the greatest F1 car of all time, IMO. Black Beauty is why I got into F1, motorsport and the study of fluid dynamics. It was a life changer for me. Only later did I learn that the most iconic Lotus road car was a type 79 as well, the Esprit S1.
Same here. I never got to actually formally study fluid dynamics but I learnt to fly, which taught me a lot and I was eventually involved in a research project involving the aerodynamic stability - or lack of it - in F1 cars.
Proportionally one of the classic beauties. One can't help but wonder how much more that design could have been developed if Chapman hadn't prioritized the Lotus 80.
The Lotus 79 in the black and gold JPS colours was my absolute favourite F1 car ever, it just looked so right!! Watched it at four F1 races, came in first in each plus two 1-2's😁😁🇬🇧
Much credit must go to Mario Andretti for helping Lotus develop the 79 - NO ONE could match his knowledge of setting up the tire pressures, spring rates and other small incremental adjustments that make a car better on a given circuit.
"...and giving a cheery wave to the Ferrari team." Boy, I'll bet. Beating Ferrari must have been most satisfying for Chapman, after all the shit and insults Enzo gave the Lotus team when they were starting out.
those "garagists" dominated F1 and made the FIA and Ferrari crazy, Lotus and Williams where years ahead in terms of technology ( the F1 cars look like they look because of the Lotus construction techniques like the monocoque chassis, torsion bar supension, sidepods, front and rear wing and many more) so the FIA was always busy trying to ban every technology that would make the Ferrari cars obsolete (namely every technology that the before mentioned teams achieved)
Who had to spend the most money? Lotus, who bought their engines from Ford and transmissions from Hewland, while the could spend their time developing the chassis and particularly the aero, or Ferrari, who developed everything in-house? Who had the most to lose?
@@Salvavideocrack Mate, you have no idea about this. The FIA, as you call it, wasn’t even the FIA back then. Not in terms of control of motorsport. It was the CSI and the FISA. You should look up the FISA-FOCA war and then come back and talk about it. This wasn’t simple tribalism. Making rules is a thankless task and anyone who does it or is charged with enforcing them is usually pilloried, however well-intentioned their efforts.
I grew up watching these cars in the 70s. Something special about that black and gold. My wife has a passion for the Subaru Impreza which is black. My racing livery on my GSXR was standard Suzuki colours. My bike has been sprayed black to match my wife's Impreza and as number 5 is now getting the Trevor Nation JPS livery although has to be black and gold number 5.
Was mesmerised by this car as a kid. Mostly from the Tamiya 1/24 scale model of it. A local hobby shop had it and I would always go pick up the box and just look at it, was totally captivated
These ground effect venturi tunnels from 79 plus active suspension, anti-lock brakes, traction control, fly-by-wire, pneumatic valve springs, and continuously variable transmission from Williams FW15C would become the ultimate Formula One car.
Mrugank Dongre You would have to wear the suites like fighter pilots do. The amount of downforce and speed you would have would be out of this world. It would suck the track up no track would be a match for its speed.

No, that had a snowmobile engine that acted to 'suck' air from under the car to achieve a similar result. Dangerous because it threw dust, rocks, and clag at following cars...thats why it was banned after 1 race.
@@philgiglio9656 the BT46B was never actually banned. It was deemed legal by FISA to race to the end of 78 season. Brabham chose not to race it, after pressure on Bernie from other team owners. Listen to any Gordon Murray interview about his design. The fan was powered directly from the gearbox using 4 clutches. The fan throwing stones back at other cars is a myth circulated by Mario Andretti in Sweden during practice. Murray, as an engineer, states that the centrifugal forces of the fan will throw any debris sideways, never directly back. It was not designed like the Chapparal fan car which had the separate snowmobile engine (although Murrays next fan car for 79 season would be based on that design).
For different reasons though. Chapman didn't want the rivals to know what lotus had discovered to make the cars to fast, so started sandbagging to throw them off the scent. Brabham was sandbagging to not make people too angry, and Bernie lose his spot as head of FOCA. But it wasn't enough, he had to stop running the cars or the other teams would abandon their support for bernie heading up FOCA.
