When Young Frankenstein came out, Aerosmith were making an album in NYC. They took a break from recording and went out to watch it. They were all high and busted out laughing when Igor did the “walk this way” bit. Steven Tyler was so inspired he wrote their biggest hit Walk This Way.

They got Gene hackman to play the blindman for free because he wanted to try out comedy. His last line was ad-libbed and the crew had to cut early due to laughing too hard. Apparently the whole Igor's shifting hump was also a gag from the actor that was later put in the script after the actors had noticed he was doing it.

    @hilarywilliams1909 ปีที่แล้ว +140

Marty Feldman (Igor) moved the hump from one side to the other throughout filming as a prank until they noticed and added it to the script.
Gene insisted that Mel not have any parts in the picture (it was his original idea and he wrote most of it with Mel only doing some rewrites). So Mel made off-camera appearances as the howling wolf, Frederick's grandfather, and the shrieking cat.
The Inspector's wooden arm is a reference to a character from the original movies that got his arm ripped off by the monster.

      And some more:
Gene Hackman ad-libbed "I was going to make espresso"
The guy running into the tree was accidental and they kept it.
The "warm milk" and "Ovaltine" gag was also improvised.
      "No tongues" also an ad-lib.
Peter Boyle came up with the idea for the mangled vocalization of "Puuutin on the Riiits".
Gene Wilder only agreed to be in the film if Mel Brooks was not, he felt that as soon as the audience saw Mel the illusion would be gone.

They did a great job with some of the scenes, like the Little Girl was throwing flowers in the water, so the monster put her in the water because he thought pretty things belong into the water. That's why it was such a big thing, and the thunder and lightning was big in the scene, and the Frankenstein said "IT'S ALIVE!" like that. Also Madeline Khan was literally transformed into the Bride of Frankestein, with the exact hairstyle after her um...encounter with the monster. Bride of Frankenstein was a sequel to Frankenstein though.

The only joke in the series that I laughed at was when the descendant sees that the monster is afraid of fire and asks "You're afraid of fire?" The monster says "You would be too if you had been chased by a mob of angry villagers with pitchforks and torches!" Then the descendant asks "When did THAT happen?" and the monster replies "When DIDN'T it happen?"

Transylvania is a real place in the Romanian countryside. It is a small peaceful village. Dracula was based on a Romanian ruler named Vlad Tepist. I may have spelled his name wrong. He got the nickname Vlad The Impaler because he would impale his enemies on stakes.

She was always a great guest on "The David Letterman" show and she hosted "Saturday Night Live" multiple times... I had the biggest crush on Teri Garr when I was growing up! 😍

While filming "Blazing Saddles" , Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder had a conversation about an idea Gene had for a movie. He told Mel it would be about the grandson of Victor Frankenstein (who famously pronounces the last name as Fronk-un-schteen because he’s embarrassed of his family’s legacy). He finds out that he’s inherited the family castle and needs to go claim it. When doing so, he finds his grandfather’s books and decides that bringing a monster to life isn’t such a bad thing after all.
Brooks loved the idea and wanted to work on it. Wilder responded that he could on one condition-he couldn’t be in it. “I said, ‘Am I such a bad actor?’’ says Brooks. “He said, ‘No, but you’re always breaking the fourth wall, and you’re always surprising, and there’s a lot of anarchy in you. I don’t want it to be a crazy comedy. I want it to be a real movie with natural comedy,’” says Brooks. “I said, ‘You’re absolutely right. That’s the way we’ll do it.’”

    Fun(?) facts:
There were several callbacks to the original Frankenstein movies.
For example, Madeline Kahn's bouffant hairdo is from "Bride of Frankenstein." Also, in the original Frankenstein from 1931 the Monster throws the little girl into the lake.
Before there was Monty Python, Marty Feldman performed with John Cleese and Graham Chapman in a 1948 sketch entitled "The Four Yorkshiremen."

Madeline Kahn & Cloris Leachman are both my favorite comedy actresses, Cloris is also hilarious in another Mel Brooks movie ''High Anxiety'' (a Hitchcock parody), which also stars the great and gorgeous Madeline Kahn. Young Frankenstein parodies the first four Frankenstein films: Frankenstein (1931), Bride Of Frankenstein (1935), Son Of Frankenstein (1939) and Ghost of Frankenstein (1942). Briefly the original 1931 film is reflected in the overall premise, the use of the original Kenneth Strickfaden lab equipment found in his garage (the equipment, not Kenneth!), and the ALIVE scene. In the original the doctor says "Alive Alive It's ALIVE. In the name of God now I know what it feels like to BE God!" which, along with the girl with the flowers scene, was censored after the original first aired and restored later. Bride of Frankenstein gave us Madeline Kahn's slivery hairdo, her hiss, the blind hermit (Gene Hackman) and the emphasis on the creature's love of music. At the blind hermit's cabin in Bride the monster actually extends his thumb the way they showed it here. Son of Frankenstein introduced Ygor (played by Bela Lugosi) who also played a horn like the one shown, often from atop the castle. It also gave us Inspector Kemp with the wooden arm. In Son Of the inspector was Krough and reveled his arm was torn out by the creature. There was also a dart game between them. In Ghost of Frankenstein Ygor is again present and connived his way into getting a transference of his intellect into the creature's body in a scene very similar to scene in Young Frankenstein where Frederick transfers some of this intellect to the creature. More similarities exist but this is way too long as it is! Nice job!!!

It was Phoebe's mom. Lisa Kudrow clearly had been imitating the comedic style of Teri Garr all along so casting Teri as Lisa's mom was a no-brainer. Garr was previously in The Conversation, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Tootsie. And, waaaay back in the 1960s, Teri was a backup dancer in several Elvis movies - see th-cam.com/video/1IOGVbOQuvU/w-d-xo.html for highlights of Teri with Elvis.

A perfectly cast film, everyone is an A-list comedian, and the Gene Hackman bit might have been the funniest part. You guys were hilarious too.
Transylvania is in Romania, or at least it used to be, not sure where the borders are now.
It's funny, cause Frankenstein is German, and Kenny Mars is doing an exaggerated German accent, and the frau in Frau Blucher is basically the German term for Mrs. in English.
Teri Garr around this time was very, how can I put this delicately? Woof.
