    I do a TON of shopping for soap supplies online and eBates lets you get rebates at nearly every major online retailer, including Amazon, eBay, and Etsy. I literally save money just by opening up a tab in my browser via their link. I have already received a check from them within the first month so I just thought I would let you guys know about this since we soap makers and DIYers buy so much online! Plus, it's free! Yippee! :D

      Twilarose77 mines on my bed, looks a bit tatty now but I still like it. It was bought in a shop but I’ve had them for long time. My mum has done huge blanket stitches to fix big tears (tehres ?tares?) that go through them. (She isn’t really into knitting or crochet.

      You're probably all taking about what are called "precious" opal varieties, those are the pretty looking ones with fire and color flashes and all that magical stuff. There's actually types of opals that are quite boring in appearance, they're called "common" and are quite cheap.
      Matrix opals can be of any variety, what makes it a matrix opal is that the opal has formed within the cracks or pockets of the stone that was already there.
      Sorry if I'm boring anyone, I'm just a bit of a nerd about this stuff, and I definitely don't want to come off as being a know-it-all 😖

      There are also places you can pay go to dig up gold, gems, or diamonds. Some of them are easier to do: you can sit down and pan for gold or wash through a bucket of excavated gravel (personally, I tried to avoid the gimmicky places that added pre-polished gems from other countries into their buckets; I much prefer gems that were legitimately found in that area). Or you can go to other locations with your own pickaxe and equipment and just wail away at the ground. I ended up doing a couple of these different sites as a special outing with my outdoorsy parents when they came to visit one year. I think we went to North Carolina for those, but I know there are similar places across the U.S. Definitely an interesting adventure, and an interesting way to meet some unusual people.

    As a fellow soap maker here is another option for opal soap. Make your cold process soap add a very iridescent mica. After removing it from the mold cut it up in chunks. Then place it in the mold all tumbled together. Place on top of it more mice to create your opal lines. Make at least 3 colors to each layer. You can have different fragrances or use the same one for each different color. After all the chunks have been done and are in the mold make up your last batch color with the mica and fragrance oil and while it is very loose pour over all the chunks. This upon unmolding gives a very pretty opal rock look. Love your soaps and your creativity. Happy Soaping!

    Opals are expensive, not to mention they are not a strong enough stone for water contact. These are beautiful though, Katie! 💜💜 You did a traditional Opal very well!! I hope I can get one of these when they're released!! Btw, I collect stones and crystals!

    • @SatiSim
      @SatiSim 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mimi's Weigh Of Life opals actually dry out over time if they don’t get in contact with water, so they get contained best with something damp in the container. That’s why old opals use to split and break when you try to handle them. they grow in water naturally as well

    • @SatiSim
      @SatiSim 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mimi's Weigh Of Life I just read your comment again, and after that: you definitely want to contain your collection with hydration!

    • @clareborrelli5713
      @clareborrelli5713 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed! Opals are VERY sensitive to temperature changes, so it would be terrible to invest in genuine opal and have to worry so much about it that it would seriously limit your creativity

    • @SatiSim
      @SatiSim 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That only happens to doublets or triplets but not to solid opals! Opals contain up to 7 or 8% of water, so leaving them completely dry makes them brittle!

    Honestly I was a little underwelmed by this one. I think it could have been improved by having a little more color "veins" swirled in to mimic the color play of an opal. As is, it kinda just looks like a regular pastel themed soap.
    A moonstone would have made a good topper! They are reasonably priced I think.

    Gorgeous! Just an idea--fire opal and black opals have deeper colored bases that might lend themselves to cold processed soaps! There are even blue opals with a big teal sheen but a very deep color! Maybe a few pole imbeds cut into flecks of different colors and a ton of shine on top, like you've done here, with clear quartz or obsidian on top? All in all a brilliant thought, you should be very pleased with the results you achieved!

I remember talking to my mum as an adult, and she said I used to drive her crazy by following her everywhere. But then she missed that as I grew up. I also managed to find some miniature cups and saucers that I have been collecting since I was 11. A very good holiday, my husband and I love going to second hand stores, looking for treasures!
