- This is my early impression of Zoologist Harvest Mouse (2023). Thank you to Victor Wong for sending the sample set to me. Thanks for your impression of Harvest Mouse. Luca Maffei is an established perfumer based in Milan, and he has created many perfumes, though mostly for Italian brands that many outside of Italy may not have heard of. It's not too easy to get his attention for North American niche brands like Zoologist, and I am very grateful for this creation.
I have MFK Oud and I don't think Harvest Mouse smells like that perfume at all; the only common elements I see they share are the amber sweetness, and the slightly bitter herbal aromatic opening.
The inspirations of most Zoologist perfumes came from individual notes that interested me and I wanted to make perfumes that feature those notes. So note inspiration first, animal later. (e.g. I wanted to explore the ink note, and I came up with Squid to represent that note.) For Harvest Mouse, I wanted to make a wheat-themed perfume, and the cute mouse was what came to my mind. Luca Maffei designed the wheat accord with Beer Extrait CO2 and he told me it was malt and hop distillation.
I guess most men want to smell confident and create the impression of an alpha-male, but as an introverted person, I (only) like cute and strange animals. That being said, Tiger will be released next, it's designed by a perfumer who has told me, "I don't do cute stuff".

Yes, the idea and image of the harvest mouse really interest me. It must smell smell supernice though. I think you are reading into it a little bit too much. I think it is cute imagining that these little mouse are harvesting for us so that we have food on our tables. :)

Hmm. Interesting. I ordered a sample of Civet, Moth and Sloth. Never smelled that house before.
I suggested to them two scents.
Sacred Red Squirrel ( Friar Tuck monk outfit)
Top: Madagascar Vanilla , Guiacwood ,Frankincense
Middle: Myrrh,Benzoin ,Labdanum
Base: Oak Barrels, Ambrette Seeds, Incense
And
Lampyridae ( Firefly)
Top: Ambergris, Geranium, Vetiver ,Clary Sage ,Juniper Berries, Basil
Middle: Cardamom ,Anise,Olibanum, Oakmoss
Base: Benzoin, Myrrh, Birch Tar, Oud, Orris Root,Patchouli

Man, OR WOMAN. 😄 Regardless of clothing. This is 2023 Ramsey. We don't want to see apology videos. 🤣 But an excellent description of the scent. I do get an homage to that rounded designer oud vibe, but more hay and vanilla than anything. I can pick out that greeness too but that could be a combo of evernyl and fir. Anyway, the whole thing just reminds me of a warm honeyed waffer I once had in Germany for some reason. At like 2 feet, the sillage just has that lovely fuzzy character. Pleasant stuff. I totally understand your views surrounding the concept, but I have to say that I'm a fan. Looking forward to your thoughts on the others from the brand!

@@RamseytheRam Ps, I recall that Victor purchased Powder & Dust from Pryn and turned it into Cockatiel. I have the original creation from Pryn and Yana but have you smelled it? A super powdery mimosa and vanilla. Same style as Harvest Mouse, so it seems to match the comforting vibe for this year.

I love the idea of Harvest Mouse. I grew up by fields. My friends back garden was practically in one and those mice were damn persistent at trying to get at food in their family kitchen. I haven't smoked in years, but I still distinctly remember the smell of the foil. I have to try it, it may remind me of my mis spent teenage years drinking beer and smoking in fields. 😂
I totally understand how branding can put you off though. I was recently introduced to Wolf Brothers Boar when I asked for something earthy. I didn't know the brand and would probably never have looked to test them if I had seen their marketing. As a middle aged woman I don't fit the alpha male demographic they're going for. Sorry Wolf 🐺 Brothers!
I know of Luca Maffei through Perris Monte Carlo. Interestingly, he's also named as the nose for Alyssa Ashley Ambre Gris, and PMC version is supposed to be practically the same, both companies have the same manufacturer. He is listed as the perfumer on fragrantica for 6 of PMC creations but not for the PMC Ambre Gris. Something going on there as a few people seem to think some of the PMC are AA perfumes at an inflated price.

Oh, and two TF's Oud Wood 10 ml travel sprays. Didn't even know I had two till I went through
the travel sprays, Oh, and a Body Spray of Oud Oud, and on and on of designer ouds, etc.

Are you serious? Similar to Oud from MFK! I love Oud from MFK! Have a mini of the extrait. But I cannot get into my head that Harvest Mouse and Oud would be similar, not even a tiny bit. Tried Harvest Mouse a few days ago in store and found it to be a straight up French style girly vanilla and didn't smell anything like a Zoologist fragrance to me. Maybe I need to spend more time with it? I met a woman in the store that said she had loved it and bought it and then totally regretted it. Something about it didn't work for her at all. I wish I could try it again! I was trying masses of fragrances during this day. We spent 7,5 hours in this niche and indie perfume shop!

This sounds neat. Sometimes we don’t feel like a Lion or we feel too much like a beast and might need to pull back a bit. Maybe that’s the idea or if you identify with a cute little mouse idk. I think they should do NYC rat. Animalic notes and hot garbage. I miss the smell of NYC since I moved.

I love 'Panda' & tempted to get this, but for the 'clove' note...not sure if I want to risk blind buy if I spray this and I got cloves 😣
The cloves arent to heavy for me in Harvest Mousse... if you get a chance to sniff do report back and let me know what you make of it 🙂

Interesting review, I haven't tried any of the Zoologist line but have been looking into a few. Like you said, I'm unsure if I would look to try this based off the name/marketing but the notes do sound nice. I unfortunately haven't got my nose on any of the fragrances you spoke of but I was interested in trying Oud Noir a while back just haven't got around to it. Otherwise it definitely sounds like an interesting fragrance. Thanks for your time, I'm onto the Cardinal video now!

Interesting, I sprayed on a strip and the longevity was impressive over two weeks. I don't know why but to my nose I get the casamoretti Italica saffron and blueberries and malt. I probably will get a bottle.

P.S try pikovaya dama, it’s in the vain of chanel no.5 parfum from what I’ve seen online. I never smelled any no.5 but pikovaya dama is a hugely nostalgic scent for me which is very weird

I just got a sample of this if it last a decent time and I don't go nose blind like I do to most scents for some reason I plan on getting this also where can I buy absolute so I can tell certain notes when I smell fragerances to see how it works in scent ?.
You can buy individual perfume ingridients I just dont know where... mine were gifted to me by Russian Adam but there are a ton of places just search around online.... thanks for watching & if you get a bottle do let me know what you make of it after wearing it for a few weeks 🙂

@@RamseytheRam Yeah, I enjoyed my sample. This is definitely a good frag, and it’ll be right for someone, but it’s not a fb buy for me. It is interesting, thought-provoking, etc. I will say (and this may have to do with gender) that I really like the mouse idea - I like cute cuddly (non-violent) more domestic animals, lol!

@@RamseytheRam I just enjoyed your "soapy" collection video. Lots of interesting examples. I was surprised you didn't include AdP Essenza di Colonia on that list. Very long lineage that it follows from the original AdP Colonia. If you haven't sampled these, highly recommended.
