There is a small issue when playing the entire Chaconne on a viola d'amore. The piece begins and ends in D minor, but there is a substantial middle section in D major. With the standard tuning, a viola d'amore has two F strings between its A and D strings, one fingered and one sympathetic. These are tuned to F natural when a piece is in D minor and to F# when a piece is in D major. There is no time during the Chaconne to retune the two F strings up to F# when the piece changes to D major or to retune them back down to F natural when the piece returns to D minor. The strings have to stay at F natural, so a little bit of resonance will be lost during the D major section.

You’re right but the D major part is very simple so when i play the entire 2d partitat, I’m always relieved to arrive in the D major. I can breathe and take a rest before the final. One thing very interesting with Bach is that the music leads efficiently so you don’t meet difficulties without musical direction. It helps a lot.

    • @Timopeo
      @Timopeo ปีที่แล้ว +8

I think that depending of how do you want to play it, the loss of resonance could be something positive, to mark an even more difference between the sections

And you would almost have to play it in a church to find out what all the Harmonic Implications might be. The F's would emphasize the minor 7th as well. It could be Spectacular.

My favourite passage from the famous Chaconne! I wish you had played all of it! I know you're just testing the instrument though and it's a great sounding viola d'amore: very rich and sonorous with that booming sound. Warm too, but not at all weak!
I play this piece on the traditional viola and it is slightly more difficult than violin of course because of the response of the strings and the placement of the fingers (stretching further). So I know you're taking a step further by playing it on your instrument. Well done 😀
I admire that you can play it on the viola d'amore at all! I can't imagine myself playing on even a 5-stringed instrument with a large guitar-like neck!
It sounded very difficult in spots (like at 1:23 with the slightly-off intonation) but you got through it!
I hope you might record the whole thing one day, because I really think people all over the world would enjoy listening to it. I certainly would want it in my playlist and would listen to it a lot!
It would be a real gift to the world.
    Keep going, I love it :) !!!

      Hi Liam,
Thanks for your comment. I play the entire 2d partitat on the viola d'amore and one day i'll publishing it.
That's odd because this viola d'amore by salomon is smaller and more easier to play than mine but I play rough on it.
But I had great time and thrills whith it.

  • @michaelmcgowan7099

I'm not quite sure what to make of it. I've only heard of viola d'amore played a few times in the past so I don't have much basis of comparison. I liked portions of this excerpt, but there were others that sounded particularly harsh. That may simply have been a problem with where the microphone was placed rather than a characteristic of the instrument.
In a case, I think that there may be better pieces to show off the unique characteristics of the viola d'amore and it's sympathetic strings, which I thought was valued for its sweet sound.

I think it is fairly clear from the 15 second mark onwards that this was meant to be played with a baroque bow which goes on more than 2 strings at once.
That raking sound of different separate notes is so jarring - vs tho chord/harmonium-like sound you are supposed to have which would be so pleasing. Instead we get the sound of pressing on strings and the chords turn into arpeggios.
The players intonation changes almost everytime he moves his thumb... the thumb contact point also changes signifying tension.
Gotta release that tension so he can play better. His hearing is great - the technique ruins it.
Or maybe that fingerboard is crooked ?
