To be fair, no one in the actual films says anything along those lines, just like no one ever mentions Lando's sexual orientation in Solo. The whole "agenda" issue everyone seems to think is the biggest flaw is mostly in the actions of the people behind the scenes, not the actual plots of the films. You could remove every speck of story that had any whiff of a political bias, and the hyperspace kamikaze scene would still make no sense, Luke's actions would still be terribly inconsistent, and Rey would still have no motivation in the story. Is she a feminist or a feminazi? There's a difference between the two. The fact that she hates The Last Jedi makes me think she's the former and if so, good for her, because the feminazis AKA man hating cunts are giving feminists a bad name.
literally my biggest criticism has nothing to do with rey and is entirely centered on luke. i hated how they took the representation of hope from the original trilogy and made him the most hopeless individual in the entire series. i mean they literally took the farm boy who grew up on a moisture farm in the middle of nowhere who always dreamed of leaving his planet on an adventure only to be drawn into a galactic conflict where he became the galaxies new hope and ultimately saving the entire galaxy while not giving up on his father until the very end who was the second most evil man in the galaxy at the time simply because he sensed a little bit of light in him. and put him on an island in the midle of nowhere where he went to die because his new jedi order was destroyed by his nephew after he tried to kill him because he sensed a little bit of darkness. to believe this character development you would have to accept that luke the guy who faced multiple failures on his way to overcoming the very hopeless situation of ending the galactic empire and never gave up decided to give up after he failed once with his new jedi order. luke the guy who never gave up on his child murdering genocidal dictator of a father because he sensed a little bit of light in him decided to give up on his innocent nephew because he sensed a little bit of darkness in him. and luke the guy who went up against the entire might of the empire with nothing but his laser sword multiple times to save his friends would all the sudden decide that challenging the empire to save his friends is a pointless endevor. it is just bad character writing and makes it so the original trilogy luke and new trilogy one are literally polar opposites of each other without giving us any justifiable reason for such a change to occur. like i am sorry but gender and politics has nothing to do with how bad this movie was. if it was a standalone movie it would not have been that bad but we are talking about the 8th installment in a series of movies that managed to blow holes into all the previous 7 movies in multiple different ways. it doesn't even fit within its own Disney trilogy of movies let alone the other 6.
You knew this was coming. It’s funny how they accuse anyone who dislikes TLJ as sexist, racist, homophobic. Yet they are the ones labeling people, putting people in groups. The ones pointing the fingers shouldn’t be throwing bricks in their glass houses.
I actually am ok with the political bullshit. I'm turned off with the bad story telling, and the fact Luke contradicted himself and passed away like a joke. The movie changed things because it could, not because of good story telling. It sucked because it disrespected the past 7 films before it. BTW, I'm a lefty, and even I can't stand the identity politics in movies these days.
My extensive research has revealed the people who rate TLJ positively fall into 4 main groups 1) Uber fans (who'll swallow/buy anything w/ the SW brand regardless of quality); these fans can recognize and agree about the many faults, but say it doesn't matter b/c at the end of the day, "it's star wars" 2) Shills 3) SJWs (Huge overlap w/ #2 btw) who care mainly about the representation in the film and advancement of political ideas. 4) Children/Mentally challenged who love the bright lights/visuals. They aren't truly fans of Star Wars as they move from one shiny movie to another.
They forgot my group, the Lucas Purists. We consider the Originals and the Prequels to be brilliant whereas the New Trilogy every single one of them are complete and utter shite. We sometimes give an exception for Rogue One.
'the customer is always right' It's an axiom that has been widely misused and misunderstood over the years. It actually refers to 'what the customer likes, the customer likes.' Preaching at them that they are wrong for liking/disliking a product will only serve to alienate them. As we seeing playing out with Star Wars.
Feminist or feminazi? If she's the former, stay with her. If she's the latter, get as far away as you can. I kind of feel bad that I need to make that distinction but feminazis are giving well meaning feminists a bad name and people keep throwing the good feminists in with the man hating lunatics.
It was actually objectively bad. I mean even if you take out some more subjective things like disagreeing with the character assassinations and being unfaithful to the originals etc, you are still dealing with a poorly made movie. The characters are one-dimensional, virtually nobody, even Rey, has anything important to do in the film, nothing important happens in the story and we leave off where we were about 3/4 of the way through TFA (with the exception that Snoke and Luke are dead, but they were played off as insignificant anyway), the dialogue is atrocious, the directing is really bad - the film has a truly awful pace, the camera work is inconsistent, some of the camera angles are questionable to begin with (look at some of the early scenes when Rey is walking and talking with Luke, and then again when Poe and whoever it was were discussing their "mutiny"), Johnson does a terrible job of tracking movement through shots, the action is boring and lifeless (not that there is much of it anyway), the performers involved, especially Daisy Ridley, are clearly struggling with the choreography (which has also clearly been simplified for them) and the stuntmen in red during the throne fight are severely over-compensating for them (as is the camera work in trying to hide the faults), there are continuity errors all over the place (the infamous disappearing dagger being just one of them), the entire 30 minute Canto Bight sequence could be cut out and would make no difference (which itself points to the fact that Finn and Rose had nothing to do in the film - a much better arc would have been Finn realizing that he can't indisciminately kill stormtroopers when there could be others like him, and thus he goes off to save some defectors, and by the end of the film the numbers the resistance lose would be mitigated by defecting stormtroopers, thereby setting up a much more interesting battle in ep9, not to mention giving Finn some multidimensionality, real morality and importance to the story), there is no worldbuilding or lore work throughout the entire film because it really does seem like Johnson doesn't know it, and it shut the door on every story arc that was set-up, leaving essentially nothing for ep9 other than more Rey vs Kylo and more of the same spaceship battles between Resistance and First Order. Not to mention the emphasis put on the whole "subversion of expectations" - we recently saw the wonders that did for Game of Thrones. Oh and we should not forget that Johnson has been accused of stealing scenes from a Star Wars fanfic, Escape from New York (or it might be Escape from LA - I don't remember), WIzard of Oz, Ella Enchanted (the throne room fight is frigging identical!) and some other film that looks like it was the original appearance of the porgs. These things cannot be explained by fandom biases, nor do they count as any kind of sexism or racism of whatever they wish to lash out at us with. It was just really bad, really lazy filmmaking.
That was the best Sith apprentice slays Master mind trick ever. Kylo's arc was great, damn then a different movie rolled over it like Rian forgot the third act was finished.
It wasn't that. It was the fact that these characters Finn, Captain Marvel, Rose, Phasma, Knights of Ren, Mandarin were all important characters. They lied to us to get butts in seats.
At the end of the day, fans don't care what kind of fans the media think they are, and they sure as hell don't care what ruin Johnson says about them. It's truly pathetic they can't just own up to their bad writing. At least others out there can do that.
Anyone who shows rage against people calling you names is proving their point. One should act with grace and humility when faced with perceived insults.
nah, I'm not here for this revisionist history where people are pretending the prequels are good now. They were bad then, and haven't gotten better with age.
The sad thing is that this "study" was conducted by a guy with a Ph.D. I work in academia myself, and even I know that there are certain ethics the researcher has to follow as they collect and analyze data, and before they get their work published. This was just sloppy. The questions were loaded, and there was too much experimenter bias (virtue signaling) that had the potential for the people taking the survey to consciously choose their answers in a way that would skew the data one way or another, in favor of what the researcher (in this case, Mr. White) is looking to prove when that is in truth not the case at all. *This is what we call "research fraud" and "scientific misconduct".* I hope this hack gets his tenure revoked.

It's precisely the reason you're not mentioned you were the actual factual little group of people and I put myself in the same group. who never freaked out over the prequel's and never embraced any of this Disney bullshit because we had the expanded universe as part of the growing up of Star Wars which influenced our overall knowledge and appreciation of the story lore. I knew the force awakens was going to be a piece of hot dog shit garbage waste saw and the fact that it wasn't taking into any account George Lucas and his vision for the series. People like you and myself are actually the nerds that Normie's used to make fun of for being Star Wars fans until nerd culture became the status quo then everybody was suddenly fucking Star Wars fans and by default it wasn't viewed negatively.
All in favor of not recognizing Disney era star wars as canon and go back to legends. It may not be official, but canon is really what is recognized by the fanbase as canon
Rey, as Abrams had set her up and left her at the end of force awakens, had the potential to be a truly great star wars hero. I mean, the mystery of how she was so powerful without training, who she really was, where she came from and most of all who her parents were. With those things set up for us to ponder, Abrams did a great job of starting a longer story that could have been full of great characters, great plot, and fantastic star wars-y action. Personally, I thought Abrams had set Rey up to be Luke's daughter. Luke thought Kylo had killed her when he killed the other students, but really Kylo wasn't dark side enough to bring himself to kill his own cousin. So he used his force mind powers (which we saw in force awakens to be very powerful) to wipe her memory, and left her on jakku. And Luke had no reason to think she was still alive. This would explain why she seemed to have some kind of subconscious force and lightsaber training (it was there, she just couldn't remember), would explain why she had been dumped on the planet as a child, and most of all it would explain why Kylo seemed to get agitated when he was told of a girl helping Finn on the planet. I mean he really became angry that a girl seemed to be helping Finn. I thought that this meant he knew it was probably Rey, since this was the planet he left her on, and he knew she was at least partly force trained and so would be a formidable foe for standard stormtroopers and tie fighters. When we saw Luke turn at the end of force awakens, I was really hoping that in episode 8 we would see him start to realise who she was and what had really happened to her. And then he would be faced with the same choice as Obi Wan had: whether to tell her the truth of who her parents are, or whether to just pretend she is a stranger so as not to confuse and maybe hurt her. But what do I know? I'm not a high paid disney feminazi propaganda writer.
i wasn't predisposed to hate TLJ, i watched the review KingEmperorPenguin did, couldn't believe it was true and went to check for myself... and it was worse in person.
If more movies follow the trend of the last couple of years of overt political correctness and elevating undeserving, weak female characters to positions of authority while all men are portrayed as witless morons, then I will simply regress to my old dvd/blu ray collection of pre-2015 movies that are largely devoid of that nonsense.
Great point. Now, if the moviemakers ment to show her as a silly naive fangirl she truly was, not as a rolemodel, it would make the whole movie better. The same goes for arrogant, incompetent Holdo. If the flaws and bad decisions of these characters were shown as flaws and bad decisions, it would be much better.
I have not talked to one person in real life that actually thinks TLJ is a good movie. And I'm talking several people. Friends, family, co-workers, acquaintances, you name it. At this point, I'm pretty sure the people that like that trash heap are the minority.
I stopped by /tv/ today and I think they either have paid Disney shills still going all out or guys are trying to troll by acting exactly like a paid shill would.
I see it the other way around; female characters in fiction deserve something better than a two-dimensional protagonist, a dangerous/petty admiral and a mentally challenged technician/pilot/thing.

Screen Rant inserts foot in mouth.
Christ, she says so herself.
Heck the only reason I halfway liked Rey was that she was a girl. A male Rey would have been even more pointless.

I really hope that people aren't being too harsh on her. The character of Rey could have been iconic with her as the star if it weren't for the fact that Rey was written as a total Mary Sue... Daisy is a good actress imo and she doesn't deserve to be this new trilogy's scapegoat.

On the one hand I think that the fandom menace should go and see the movies to report back to us. Their videos are so much more entertaining than anything Disney had brought to us.
But on the other hand, it sets a bad example. If they go, then their viewers are more likely to go aswell. It's also disingenuous to bash Disney all the time, but still watch their crap.
And I agree with you completely. If they would have just made bad movies, but didn't attack their fans, then there would not be such a backlash. I'm fine with watching a bad film. But getting called all sorts of names for not liking it is just disgusting and untruthful.

A vocal minority? If it's a minority, then why are they making such a big deal out of it?
literally my biggest criticism has nothing to do with rey and is entirely centered on luke. i hated how they took the representation of hope from the original trilogy and made him the most hopeless individual in the entire series.
i mean they literally took the farm boy who grew up on a moisture farm in the middle of nowhere who always dreamed of leaving his planet on an adventure only to be drawn into a galactic conflict where he became the galaxies new hope and ultimately saving the entire galaxy while not giving up on his father until the very end who was the second most evil man in the galaxy at the time simply because he sensed a little bit of light in him. and put him on an island in the midle of nowhere where he went to die because his new jedi order was destroyed by his nephew after he tried to kill him because he sensed a little bit of darkness.
to believe this character development you would have to accept that luke the guy who faced multiple failures on his way to overcoming the very hopeless situation of ending the galactic empire and never gave up decided to give up after he failed once with his new jedi order. luke the guy who never gave up on his child murdering genocidal dictator of a father because he sensed a little bit of light in him decided to give up on his innocent nephew because he sensed a little bit of darkness in him. and luke the guy who went up against the entire might of the empire with nothing but his laser sword multiple times to save his friends would all the sudden decide that challenging the empire to save his friends is a pointless endevor. it is just bad character writing and makes it so the original trilogy luke and new trilogy one are literally polar opposites of each other without giving us any justifiable reason for such a change to occur.
like i am sorry but gender and politics has nothing to do with how bad this movie was. if it was a standalone movie it would not have been that bad but we are talking about the 8th installment in a series of movies that managed to blow holes into all the previous 7 movies in multiple different ways. it doesn't even fit within its own Disney trilogy of movies let alone the other 6.
I am thankful to this article for telling me what my political views are.

My extensive research has revealed the people who rate TLJ positively fall into 4 main groups
1) Uber fans (who'll swallow/buy anything w/ the SW brand regardless of quality); these fans can recognize and agree about the many faults, but say it doesn't matter b/c at the end of the day, "it's star wars"
2) Shills
3) SJWs (Huge overlap w/ #2 btw) who care mainly about the representation in the film and advancement of political ideas.

The movie sucked. Get over it
Disliking the Last Dumpster Fire, means you used logic and heart and you are a true fan of Star Wars
the last jedi i really didnt care for , it was good in some parts of the movie but most of the movie was bad ,
It was actually objectively bad.
Luke had one in character moment, his milk drinking but why did he drink it like that?

Looking forward to the results of the Rise of Skywalker..
Sadly, there are still people who will go to their grave defending TLJ
Maybe the study instead proves that people who value inclusion over competence don't understand (and thus appreciate) quality.

That disection of Star Wars fans is bs. What about fans who like the original, prequels and old true EU called Legends like myself.
Mary Poppins Flying Leia was creepy

We need to put Star Wars in a capsule and bury it and let the next batch of beings do what they want with it.
The only thing Rose is fighting for is Finn's love. She ain't no fighter lol
