I got a Starking with their 28,000 bph movement that had that issue once. I've heard others have had it too, sort of like the Miyota stutter on steroids. I think that's one of the reasons that they've recently switched over to Japanese movements in a lot of their newer watches.
As far as I know, Starking uses the same movement in all their watches, which looks like a Chinese dg2813 movement, which is known to be somewhat lacking in quality control and reliability. The Watch Repair Channel did a review and teardown of one of these Starking watches.
What the hell is up with the seconds hand @ 8:02 - watch for a few secs Edit: also @ 9:40 "Smooth high beat -T3" lmao its juttering like the gear lash is a joke Edit: welp he noticed finally 10:10 Was wondering if he would notice
Excellent value for money if you get a good one. The first Starking I purchased was DOA so I returned it and tried my luck again. The second one was great. I gifted it to my brother awhile back and it's still working great and keeping excellent time.
Best part of your review was when you briefly focused on the Diver's clasp on your Marine Master Tuna.😎👍 About 2-3 months ago I actually went online and bought 5 of those clasps to replace the traditional diver clasps on some of my Seiko's.😼
My Starking AM0189 has issues with the movement too. If they take a whack on the side they stop moving and the movement shutters at times as seen in your video. Did a video on this on my channel and it is the same. Thought it might be a sample size of one but now I’m not so sure. Looks like it might be a problem across the brand. It seems common.
@@mrbacchus6127 rather there was something on the (indirectly driven) second hand pinion between the teeth.... it just went somewhere else waiting to cause more problems..... Not complete junk movements (I mean there are worse), just assembled dirty.....
Just a thought/something I noticed.. Where the watch skips, is exactly where you pulled out/tried to pull out, the crown the first time and started trying to change the date window. I wonder if that has something to do with it. I know next to nothing about automatic watches, but do remember something about not setting the day during certain hours. I wonder if you caused the sweep error?
T3, sent it back! You can not be sure if you got the right one. The model #'s are not the same. Don't waste more money. Get a good one first!! THANKS for the Videos. Always great info.
Video/Series Idea: Weekly episode reviewing the watch collections of fans. Might be a nice way to interact with followers of the channel and get some inspiration perhaps
I noticed that second hand skip while you were praising the smooth sweep. I first thought it was an editing thing.. it's probably caused by some debris or maybe some over lubrication that will work itself out as the gears continue to mesh and spread out the excess lubrication in the movement.
I'm not sure if anyone else has called this out or if you noticed but they sent you a watch with a rose-gold tone seconds hand but the one on Amazon has a blue seconds hand. Which would maybe also explain the difference in ref. number?
In the very end: This is a 50 dollar watch with automatic movement and sapphire crystal, as well as applied indices and a leather strap. Something can not be quite right there :D
Indirect seconds could explain that, but usually those exhibit their stuttering in a variety of positions around the dial, not a fixed one. I had another watch that exhibited something similar, the reason was that second hand was actually bent and touching the minute hand. Watchmaker fixed that for me for not a lot of cash :) But yeah, it is possible that something else is going on with this movement. I wonder how long they would last for with daily wear.
I expecting a cadisen 1032 and don't get to mad but a loreo sub homage from AliExpress. Almost out of curiosity. What do you think about the Seiko 6105 from San Martin? Love the look expecially the bronze case with the green dial.
I was looking at both (Starking AM0184 vs. Cadisen C-1032) and asked Jody from Justonemorewatch which was better since they looked so similar - and he said that the Cadisen is definitely the better watch.
@@karlsenula9495 yeh i think with starking people see hi beat and fall for it but cadisen is clearly a better watch.I bought mine for 57$ if it had seiko logo on it and not cadisen it was a 300$ watch at least.
Did a little Google search...Starking AM0213 is the Skeleton Tourbillon model...looks like they either used the wrong back case or ran out of the AM0239 back case and the worker got lazy, not very surprised from my 20+ years of experience in dealing with local Chinese factories
I have this watch as well. I do not like the crown too as it is too small. My watch do not have your problem but it does stop when I shake it very hard. There is some review about this as well. Could be something to do with the "in house" movement. The model should be AM0239 and my watch caseback did not indicate the model number like yours. By the way, I bought mine on aliexpress. Frankly speaking, I think buying this kind of Chinese made watches depends on your luck because I do not think they have a very good quality control department.
Definitely get another one to see if you get a better movement. Or tell them that one is broken and see if you can return it. See what the return experience would be.
Disappointing example from Starking I would look at getting a refund especially because you've ordered it off Amazon. Great balanced review keep it up!
I have a gold color starking with a gold face (so not this model) and it’s been fine. None of the problems you mentioned here. I’m guessing with such cheap watches that some just don’t work quite right. My starking does have one problem, though, that your watch shares that you didn’t mention: the buckle doesn’t match the watch color! Why are they putting silver colored buckles on gold colored watches??
The seconds hand issues is probably due to indirect seconds design. It can be resolved by adjusting the pressure of the spring which tensions the seconds pinion.
I have two Starking watches but they are a shot in the dark. But for $50 bucks I took the shot. Take a look at the GUANQIN Automatic GJ16034 with the Seiko NH36A movement. Its about $70 on Aliexpress right now. I have one and its a cool purchase for the price.
I've got the AM0184 model and it's got the same shitty crown action. No second hand issues, that seems like something's broken inside in the one you got. Instead, mine's got misaligned hour/minute hands :) I even messaged Starking about it. Their reply was: " hello , dear , the mechanical watch not so precise , it can work normally " :D
It’s a very nice LOOKING watch. Shame about the movement... maybe the moving of the crown did something on the inside? Idk. You should get another one, if you like it.
9:43 “And that seconds hand as it sweeps very smoothly across that date window, you’ll notice it’s moving at a very smooth, hi-beat.” Right in the middle of that sentence, the seconds hand start to go wonky around the 7 hour marker. Very smooth indeed lol. But for 50 bucks, I guess we can’t complain much.
daniel viegas forgive me if I’m incorrect, but I don’t think there’s any brand new Seiko 5 at 50 dollars? I could be wrong. But yeah, I’d rather just sink in a couple of ten dollars to get a new Seiko 5, or just save and get a new G-Shock.
Thanks for the video! As for the watch I think it would be interesting to get another one, and I'm sure Amazon will replace it in a heartbeat. And happy (late) birthday!
Starking has modified a Miyota movement to run at a very high frequency. That skipping should however not change the accuracy of the watch because it is just a „representation“ of the time. The second hand seems to be indirectly driven. I would love to see those Starking watches with lower frequencies because that high frequency simply increases the stress on the movement which will make it break earlier. If the movement breaks however you can replace it easily with a Miyota, so, not a big deal here...
I love this direction that you're going. Even if you had that Director Michael cash you'd proabably still do this Starking review. Speaking of Starking, this one is a disappointment. Everything looked so good. The dial and the rosegold. That caseback and movement as well. I love that logo on the caseback. I still might get one on aliexpress though 🤣
I’ve got the same issues with the one I got, the skip is at 3 o’clock though😅 Also, if I shake it hard enough the hour and minute hands just move around freely. Complete garbage
I got a Loreo that is the same way. Feels like I’m gonna break it when trying to hack. The date click is basically a guess on how far to pull the crown. But it was $60 so can’t complain really. Once set, it runs fine
Okay, how much is the cost of the watch? Right! You get what you pay for, at that price point, that skip won’t bother me, remove the seconds hand if it bothers you and done, no more skipping.
Take a look at the forums and there is a lot of discussion around the stuttering issue and cheap Chinese movements. Well, just as you'd expect from a watch in this price range. If you want to produce and sell an automatic watch this cheap, you have to save on certain things. Even Chinese workers don't work for free and I am guessing that QC is one of the things that they're saving on. Mind you, this is a hi-beat, "very many jewels" (lol, love that marketing of theirs), automatic movement with hacking and sapphire crystal. I don't know how cheaper than this with these features would even be possible, apart from giving them away for free. So I guess you'll have to live with the fact that quality will vary from watch to watch and that you got lucky with the AM0184 you previously reviewed. I'd say it's a 50/50 chance. But hey, it's Amazon. If it has glitches, you just return it.
At 19:20 into the video I swear the seconds hand didn't jump when it was at the 7 o'clock mark but yes, buy a second one and see. Even with established brands there's the odd dodgy watch sometimes.
