Yes some children are really shy. It takes hard work to get them to open up. I had two students that refused to speak for a year and a half. It wasn't until I sat down during a summer camp and taught them an art project step-by-step that they actually started to open up.
Hey thanks for the question! Many blessings to you and your educational goals. I'd say the biggest thing that helps me is that I meditate prior to every class. I pray and just get myself centered. Then I set everything up that I will need in order. I also always know in the back of my mind that I'm dealing with people so anything can happen and that the unexpected can be exciting. When I get jittery, I tend to push the class to a game or dance to release energy.
I volunteered in Uganda. I also worked at the Writing Center at my university. As for paid instructor positions, this was my first. Japan and South Korea and usually good places to start. The one thing that pulled me away from Japan was the currency exchange and the ability to invest. Japan is a beautiful country and I really like it. Korea is a great place to learn your craft. At my university I have 27 other foreign professors. At my previous schools I was the only one.
If you want to find a quality position I would suggest using www.ESLstarter.com as your recruiting company. Anytime I ever want a position I always go thru them. They are professional and will help you find the right program/school to teach at in South Korea. Thank you for watching!
It's really helpful (if both teachers have a good relationship) due to the language and culture barrier. Each teacher serves as a different set of eyes. The students have more attention and there is always a bank of ideas.
Hello! Yes, I do. My good friend and fellow teacher was an extremely introverted person. I think the best method for a person that is introverted, but still able to maintain good classroom approach would be a student-centered classroom. In that type of class setting, the students lead at least 75% of the time. The teacher is more of a guide and it allows them to move around the classroom freely. In this type of situation, the teacher can approach students individually or in groups which would make teaching in front of others or interacting less stressful.
Thank you for watching! I did not feel nervous. During your teacher trainning you will undergo a mock evaluation. Two times a year we are evaluated so after a while it becomes normal.
Hey thanks for sharing the video with others. I have been teaching for 2 years and 6 months in Korea. Prior to that I worked at the university writing center for 1 year. Prior to that prior (lol) I worked as a tutor for a few years. Thanks for the question!
you really did a good job.Teaching english in South Korea is not that easy as they thought most reason is that they have only know basic english. Your video really gave me an additional idea on how to handle korean elementary students.
Hi just wanted to ask you if you've taught in any other countries? I plan to go to either South Korea or Japan, haven't really decided. Were there a lot of expats where you taught? Thanks for the video!
Hello, I am not too sure if you are actively responsive on here, but I am thinking of teaching at SK. But I am not too sure how to go about it. I love how this video lesson went, but my thoughts of the BEFORE all of this. How do you start? What do you do? What age group is this and how did you flow with it? You know. If I can talk to you, I would love to. I can email you. Please and Thank you. If not, answer me here. :)
I really like the video I'm so glad to see this video :) thanks so much please do more because i'm very interesting about the education in south korean to make this true in my country kamsamnida ;)
I'm interested in teaching at an hagwon (or academy i suppose). I would not have a co-teacher right? Also I have no idea about coming up with lesson plans/ games for the students. Is there any training? I'm going to visit Seoul for a few weeks soon so perhaps I could go check some places out and talk with them?
Victor Yes, it is possible to walk in and talk with someone. How is your Korean? I actually got a Hagwon job walking in and talking with an owner. Sometimes the owners don't speak as good English as the staff so be prepared. Also, bring with you any credentials and leave a copy of your CV and resume just case they want to keep it on file. Good luck!
Hey! All the public schools evaluate the teacher at least once a week. I had two evaluations. One was for the parents and another for the district. It was quite fun!
I am trying to become an ESL teacher so I'm in the certification program. We're supposed to observe instructors for one course. Would you mind if I used your video as one of my assignment write-ups? Thank you either way!
You are more than welcome to use the video. If you have any questions or need to complete a survey please direct them to my inbox. Have a wonderful day and many blessings on your studies!
Thanks a bunch! I do have a couple questions, but I'm not sure how to see your email address so that I can send it directly to your inbox. Any suggestions?
We are considered "Guest English Teachers," and you will be considered as an assistant teacher. Now there are always exceptions to this rule. I had 14 co-teachers that I supported; however, the reality was that about half of those classes were taught by me alone. It will all come down to your site administration and qualifications. As a general rule, they are the head teacher and you are the support teacher.
Hello! Were you teaching in public or in academy school?I like the way you taught and handled your student's. If you don't mind, could you please help me out making a lesson plan on teaching ESL elementary students. I really don't have an idea. Thank you in advance. :)
The native or fluent English speaker is a guest English teacher, and the Korean English teacher is either a homeroom teacher or a licensed English subject only teacher. The pair of you are co-teachers. The Korean teacher is your immediate supervisor, so it is up to them whether you lead or not. That can be discussed weekly before planning lessons. Since they are very busy doing administrative tasks, you'll have to sit with them on day 1 to ask when is the best time to meet for class work discussions. Some may not feel confident in their speaking abilities and would prefer that you lead. They shouldn't hang back though; they could assist or observe and collect data to go over with you afterward. I taught in Korea for a year in 2014. Having experience doesn't always guarantee that you will have a successful co-teaching experience. Communication and cultural sensitivity are key!
Hmm, I can tell your really trying and props to you, but at the same time I feel you are really tensed up and feel kind of awkward? (The impression I got). I think if you put a bit more energy and try to using exaggerated phrases and sentences, it would really help. Ive taught kids younger than elementary (shown in this clip), and what Ive noticed is you talk pretty much monotone through the lesson and don't try using an exaggerated personality. Usually the kids would tend to lose interest really quickly and it becomes tedious trying to teach them, and also awkward and they pretty much get bored, because you have to remember, half these kids don't have a genuine interest to learn english. If anyone is planning on teaching in Korea, if you teaching younger kids, you need to consider using strategies such as high energy personalities to attract he kids attention, because its what the school and parents want. So in simple words, for any introverts, you need to make a fake high energy, witty and funny personality and not be scared to make a fool of yourself whilst doing it.
I would be so nervous with the adults watching in the back

Yes my classes were very small BUT I had three different schools. Some teachers have 600 students in a week others only 60. Thanks for watching!

wow being judged like that is unacceptable for teaching
wow, i usually do not comment, but you are an awesome, interactive teacher, love it!
I love your teaching method. I actually want to teach in Korea and English as a second language in general.
If you want to find a quality position I would suggest using www.ESLstarter.com as your recruiting company. Anytime I ever want a position I always go thru them. They are professional and will help you find the right program/school to teach at in South Korea. Thank you for watching!
The district administration, school administration, and a visiting principal. Twice a year guest teachers are evaluated.

Do you have any advice for introverted shy people who wants to teach English in Korea? Have you met anyone like that beforehand?

Thank you for your response. I appreciate it. :)
This is good to know because I am also introverted and shy and I am considering to teach English in Korea some day not sure yet :)

Don't worry! It's something all the teachers do. At the end you should get really good feedback that will help you improve your teaching skills.
Thank you so much for the support!

Were you nervous? Being observed is what I'm most nervous about as far as teaching.

Hi, what is the demo video for? Is this to assess your teaching? When is it done?
Hey! All the public schools evaluate the teacher at least once a week. I had two evaluations. One was for the parents and another for the district. It was quite fun!
Hello -- May I share this nice clip with other teachers?
Dr. Dave Rojeck Hello! Yes you may use the clip. I'm glad that you find it helpful.

do all EPIK teachers get landed with a native 'co-teacher' as opposed to a native assistant?

can an Epik teacher choose to be either the main teacher or the co-teacher?
The native or fluent English speaker is a guest English teacher, and the Korean English teacher is either a homeroom teacher or a licensed English subject only teacher. The pair of you are co-teachers. The Korean teacher is your immediate supervisor, so it is up to them whether you lead or not. That can be discussed weekly before planning lessons.
