You are 100% correct blanket weed can only be killed off with a treatment.

Use aqua source blanket resolve. Ive had this discussion and i was a bit thrown cus as u say its got to get to the uv but some how it does actually help a little and i think that its the fact that the blanketweed holds the crap and SOME single cell algae that makes it look thicker and protects it somehow. I totally agree that the only way to get rid of it is adding something to the pond. If you have only koi and goldfish use whatever as long as its not heavily stocked (which i am). Any kind of fish treatment is a very last resort for me even salt as i want my fish to be able to fight it off for themselves. Also most algae treatments lower oxygen levels and if you have sturgeon like me (or orfe) you need to remove them or find something else like barley straw (not the extract as its still a chemical even tho its nearer natural) alot of plants which isnt convenient if u dont have a bog filter. So i Use a brand aqua source for as much stuff as possible because its all natural and ALL fish and animal safe and ive used the blanket resolve many times without a 2nd thought and my sturgeons fine. You dont need to turn your uv off like some brands tell you to either. Admittedly it may not be the mose effective 1st time (but it has been for me) but algae dont hurt fish its jus looks crappy so i dont mind using something thats nowhere near as harsh on the fish even if it eventually comes to it i have to use again. Its a total ballache trying to remove a 3ft sturgeon cus they're soo fast and swim straight into the wall, leave it in another pool for a few days and them put him back 2 do it all over again a week or 2 later. I try keeping the blanketweed to a minimum for him cus thats what keeps the bottom of the pond clear and cus they cant swim backwards he gets caught in it and causes a whirlpool lol

That bloke must be reading from a website with no actual experience. We who keep koi know cloverleaf is the best product for the job and a uv will not remove blanket weed

You’re correct Rob. My u.v has never been able to kill my string/hair/blanket weed. Cloverleaf just sorts it doesn’t it.To any one who hasn’t used cloverleaf before you can also leave your U.V light on while treating which is a plus point.
Rob, what are your thoughts on 110watts of UV killing good bacteria aswell as bad bacteria/parasites etc?
I’m guessing that your nitrites are fine so wasn’t sure if it’s simply the case of where inline that the UV is plumbed in.
    Cheers,
    Darren

DMD Saddlery hi my uv is pump fed then into my ultra sieve then into the eazypod don’t think It kills bacteria I’ve been told you need a uv steriliser for that 👍

Totally right, blanketweed grows in the pond, never sees the uv light. Once you have it, it's virtually impossible to get rid off totally as it grows from spores. Kill it off with chemicals and the spores left behind grow at a later date.
U V doesn't even kill algae, it makes it go sticky and it then clumps together in particles larger than its normal single cells. These are then large enough to be filtered out by filter foam etc.
The only solution I have found for blanketweed (without using chemicals) is to fit a Waterking electronic blanketweed controller (made by Lifescience), other makes are available but I haven't found another that actually works.

To be killed off it has to go through the UV. Or is he using a UV bulb straight in the pond like Pete waddy does

I’ve had 3 ponds now and all from koi carp to gold fish & Sturgeon and a uv will never kill blanket weed unfortunately you need a chemical to kill the blanket weed not a uv people talk shit , his local fish shop must be filling him with some wrong fishy ideas haha

Hi Bob, i watched a past video of yours when you were having a nightmare with blanketweed and is exactly where i am :-( i have been on some forums but had no help, i only have a small pond around 1200 litres and cascading waterfalls from my oase filtoclear which is pumped at around 7000 lph from my oase pump and is not in direct sunlight but my blanketweed is hurrendous i have tried evolutuon aqua stop blanketweed that doesnt seem to do much at all which i think was the same as you found, forums tell me there is no solution for blanketweed, did cloverleaf work for you ? And is there anything you can recommend that may help, like making a shade canopy over the top to shade the daylight ? Any advice would be fantastic thankyou :-)

Joe Dee Hi joe I’ve always used cloverleaf to kill the blanket weed works well, but like you one year I decided to give evolution aqua ago wished I’d saved my money. If you can put some partial shade over the pool it will help, reduce feeding and a water change 25% weekly. Hope this helps matey stay safe 👍

@@robprice4095 cheers Bob, ive seen so many conflicting things, most people saying nothing will help, they say regularly adding water will encourage blanketweet, some say shade will make the blanketweed grow harder, i have got the bulk of weed out and have cloverleaf on order as well as new uv tube, what are your views on plants in the pond and blanketweed ? I have no plants at the moment, and would plants want light that making a shade would hinder ?

    • @robprice4095

The blanket weed feeds on fish waste and sunlight helps it grow quicker. If you think about it in the winter when the fish go off feeding and the days get shorter you don’t get blanket weed and as for plants every little helps, that’s if you can stop the fish from eating them 😀

Only 2 ways I know of stopping blanket weed forming are starving it out (with effective & large biofiltration) or copper Ion gens.

    Hi Rob
You are correct. UV only stops green water. But your UV's wont kill parasites or bacteria. You need a UV steriliser to do that which has a different wavelength. Cheers Andy
