  • If you’ve used and know what Cleaning Mode does you probably don’t need to watch this video ... but I’ve found many Sony shooters fighting sensor dust problems and haven’t heard of this function.

      Appreciate the kind words. Check out Mark Galer's Alpha Creative Skills on youtube I think the most comprehensive and best info on getting the most out of your Sony. Tony Northrup also does a really good job explaining all the menu systems and choices.

    WOW! Just WOW! Thank you for this video mate! I was about to get all the cleaning bits out as I just noticed I had some bad sensor dust. This is CRAZY! No one knows about this!

    Amazing cleaning results Wayne. I am used to using cleaning mode on my Nikons and had seen it buried in the Sony Menus. I even used it once. However, I forgot about it until I saw your video. Now I will use it on my A7R4 regularly. I’m one of those fellows who uses a blower bulb on my camera around the mount and on the back of the lens before chaging lenses. Now, I can use this cleaning mode too. I hate sensor dust.

    This is a game changer! How did I not know about this!! Why didn’t Sony not tell us and advertise this !! I bought a cleaning kit and I decided to look online for a video on how to clean (yes I agree Tony’s video inspired me get the kit as a new Sony user and I also found some spots) and I found your video first!!! Game changer! Thank you sooooooo very much for making this video- I’ve subscribed! You are awesome!

      Glad you liked it. I was surprised to find it as well. I always assumed it was an "unnecessary" menu item, since I didn't need to use it to get to the sensor like a DSLR cleaning mode. I wish it would automatically "clean" whenever you turned it on, or at least every few times when you turn it on. Not sure why it doesn't.

    Thanks Wayne.... I too am moving over from Nikon to the Sony (A9 II) and all of a sudden I'm reading all these posts about Sony mirrorless sensor dust issues and I'm thinking did I make the wrong move (and I just sold my Nikon 600 lens). I don't think a lot of Sony mirrorless owners know about it. I just posted your video to several Sony FB groups, hope you get a lot more subscribers. I joined, keep this content coming sir, I have a lot to learn. First venture into the mirrorless cameras... Rob Monsipapa Mesa AZ

      glad it helped. I was surprised how well it worked. Still not sure why it doesn’t do it when you turn the camera on ... at least maybe every 10 times or so?

    Hello. I recently bought a Sony A7IV - along side my Canon R6 which I have owned for over a year. I also shoot videos mostly without an ND filter so at small apertures. Never had to wipe my Canon R6 sensor in over a year and same with the prior Canon R which I also owned for about a year. I had the Sony for about a month and the sensor is full of dust. I swap lenses with body side down - I also remove the battery and discharge the voltage by turning on the camera without a battery and I also enable the shutter curtain closing at power off. I try to use the cleaning mode often which is now called Antidust and after a week dust is back. Its crazy how something I never had to worry about is now the number one reason I'm not liking my new Sony. I shoot birds and wildlife and I often start recording in between burst shots so I can not mount and ND in between shots so I'm forced to shoot at small apertures. I don't have thousand dollar video editing software so I'm left with these videos with spots on them. Photo dust I can clone out but video I can not. Should I be really cleaning my sensor once a week ??? My home is not dusty - nobody smokes and I try to swap lenses indoor as much as possible. Seriously with my Canons I used the blower a few times but never touched the sensor with a cleaning pads. I also shot video and no dust even at F22. I know the Canon shakes the sensor (cleaning mode) every time I power off and also it has the shutter curtain down at power off. Is this because the camera is new ???? Will it get better ??? ....help.

    The Sony A6000 also has cleaning mode, so it has been around at least 6 years - except it doesn't shake the camera like the A7Riv. It's a bit surprising that someone that says they sell Sony cameras and says the menus are illogical never actually looked through the menus to see what things are there. Otoh I have never found cleaning mode that effective.

    I just seen a video on the A9 have a soft wear update to clean the sensor when you clothed the camera. I hope they will have it on the a7r4 too.

    I've had mine for a couple weeks and have had a lot of problems with dust. I haven't found that the Sony Sensor Clean works. Please keep us updated if it has continued to work for you.

    • @cwaynefox
      @cwaynefox  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear it isn't working. I have yet to clean my a7r4 sensor, seems so far a quick cleaning mode every few times I use the camera keeps the dust under control.

      @@cwaynefox I wonder if the A7R4 vs A7M4 somehow the AA filter stops the static between the sensor and the final filter glass. My new A7IV is like a Hoover.

    Can we use the cleaning mode with a lens or we need ro remove the lens?

    • @cwaynefox

      Sure. I’ll take the lens off and hold the camera sensor facing down sometimes but usually I just left it on.

    The cleaning mode has been in the Sony A7R cameras from the beginning. It did not vibrate in the beginning.like it does now..

    • @cwaynefox
      @cwaynefox  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I”ve tested this now in my a7r, my a7r3, a7r4, and also my a6500. The cleaning mode seems to function identically in all of them, vibrates about the same level of intensity.

  • @shadda
    @shadda 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You've had better luck with it than I have. I don't even bother with it, because it's never done any good for me. But like you said, think about how much time and effort could be saved if sony had just made the shutter close when you switch lenses. They do it on the newest models, but you'd think that's something they could push downstream in firmware updates. As much as I love my camera, sony has always (since I was a kid) been the absolute worst at UI and UX/user experience design. Just awful.

    • @cwaynefox
      @cwaynefox  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. Maybe there isn’t a way for them to detect when you switch lenses. Could at least put in a “switch lens” menu that would close it.
