    Using steel wool to capture creative photos can lots of fun! After receiving a handful of questions on steel wool, I decided it was time to grab my gear and hit the road. Although I demo with the Nikon D3400, the techniques mentioned in this video apply to any camera regardless of size/model/manufacture (Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc.).
    Why use an entry level DSLR when I have access to a full frame camera? 1) entry level cameras are VERY capable in my opinion 2) encourage people interested in photography 3) demonstrate interesting photos are not necessarily about expensive gear

    Wow. Thank you so much for your words. I was literally a hair away from giving up in following my passion of photography as I am only just beginning and don't know where to start. I'd watched so many videos prior to this one that made me completely confused and unmotivated to follow through with photography. Thank you for reassuring me that photography isn't intimidating after all. and you don't need the most expensive camera to take a good shot ! Thank u so much, new subbie:)!

    I love the fact that you use the Nikon D3400 and the 18-55mm Kit Lens. I just recently purchased it as my first DSLR, and your videos are a huge inspiration to me. It does me good to know that so many amazing things can be done with my camera, my lens, and a few cheap accessories. I understand wanting use some of your higher-end gear in your future videos, but don't forget us entry-level folks either. ^^

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) Funny how this channel started - simply to to help/inspire people. I started with photography because I have lots of experience in the field and knew a handful of people in need:). As manufactures release new gear, their marketing departments spend more and more time/money trying to tell consumers why they should buy. I have a solid understanding of business and get the model behind their efforts, but I want people to know that entry level cameras are fully capable and can produce very good results in the right hands. The key is knowledge - knowledge regarding various features, functions, and how to manipulate them to achieve desired results. Hopefully, I can help to close the gap and let people fully express their creativity with budget gear.

They have helped me out tremendously and I constantly re-watch them for pointers on shots and different techniques. Keep up the great work! P.S. what's the name of the song you use in this video? I tend to have that song playing in my head when I am out shooting things lol.

    This is really cool. Festival of Lights is at hand here. Can imagine some really cool shots with firecrackers (with safety always on priority of course). Best part about working with your guidance is I have been able to put my old bridge camera, a Canon S3 IS, to some creative use (may be with not your level of skill, but still that camera is finally seeing some great use towards the end of its natural life).
    Great content...and your presentation makes us feel part of the whole process.

      @@RealWorld : This is a real cool trick. It takes a maestro to know how to make camera see what one wants it to see...and not to forget, make it all seem so easy. :-)
      I have had so much fun since I let go of the crutches of Auto. Your video on The Fearsome Four is what got me started on your channel. A humble suggestion, if you can create an entry-level photographer's journey among collection of your videos, so that people coming to your channel can learn about the camera, photography principles and the equipment before moving on to taking pictures -> getting creative with shots. It will help them connect with the whys before they get to the hows (which is where your guidance delivers tremendous value). I have not had much truck with TH-cam beyond being the audience, but I believe you can create series/lists in some way.

    I have learned so much from your videos. This one gave me a great idea however not sure what the ambient light will do. At Christmas time would like to go to the riverfront with the Christmas lights across the river reflecting in the water. while doing the steel wool. will the light from the Xmas display behind the wool effect flush it out?

      @RealWorld  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the post and glad to be of help!:) Might make for an interesting photo - if you take it, post a link back:). I think you will be okay as the light from the steel wool will burn bright and I suspect will overpower the background (depending on the amount of light).

    Brilliant videos! I've recently bought a D3400, with little DSLR experience. Your videos have opened my eyes and I'm now in danger of becoming a 'photography bore'!!
    On your steel wool video you make mention of something that has been puzzling me. On your advice, I've switched to back button focus and usually use manual mode. When I put my camera on a tripod, with delayed shutter (so I can run and be in the photo), how and when does the camera focus? Same question for when I use the remote for the same end - when and how does it focus, or do I need to do this before I press the shutter? You mention that you need to use manual focus if using the remote - I don't quite understand why.
    Many thanks , keep up the good work, Nikon should give you a medal for using the D3400!! All the best - Chris

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the post/feedback Chris and glad to be of help!:) Sounds like you are on the right path!:) When using back button focus (BBF), you will lock focus on whatever you like using the rear button > release the button > take the shot with the shutter and all is well. When using the self timer, you will follow the same process (select the delay > lock focus with the rear button > press the shutter button (which starts the timer) > run into the scene and wait for the shot). When using the remote, the focus mechanism changes slightly. How? The camera will try to automatically lock focus when using the remote regardless of using BBF. Strange, right?:) So if you use BBF to lock focus on something in the scene > position yourself in front of the camera > use the remote to simulate the shutter > the camera will automatically try to lock focus again before taking the shot. In order to prevent this from happening, you must switch to manual focus after locking focus using BBF - make sense?:) So, you would do the following which using the remote to prevent the camera from trying to automatically lock focus: lock focus on something in the scene using BBF > switch to manual focus > position yourself in the scene > use the remote to take the shot. Hope this helps!:)

      @@rohanpatil5262 Not a problem and I will do my best to help:). Rather than reply with a simple - it is up to you, I will give you my opinion. Both cameras can take photos and video and do so very well. If I had to choose between Nikon and Canon, I might lean towards Nikon if heavily focused on photos and lean towards Canon is heavy focused on video. One additional consideration which is relatively affordable and tends to do both video and photos well, might be the Panasonic G7. This is an older camera but I believe Panasonic is manufacturing it. I used it to shoot images for my fall video which can be found here - th-cam.com/video/7JbO7E9vCNA/w-d-xo.html ... hope all this helps to some extent!:)
