    A really thorough comparison. Thanks for taking the time. Unfortunately, IKEA don't want to offer a choice here so Expedit loses out to Kallax, even though many of us would have gone for the more sturdy Expedit construction if given the option, even if a premium was exacted in the price. One wonders if they've now read and are applying Ralph Nader's tract on built-in obsolescence. For sure Apple have and evidence is that it pays handsomely.

    I had the old expedit inserts at an old apartment and loved them. Just got a new Kallax shelf for my office and unknowingly bought the inserts (drawers and cabinets) and was soooooo disappointed. The flexibility of being able to move them around was the whole appeal. Thank you for sharing that it’s possible to at least use the drawers without permanently affixing them. I may keep those but the cabinets will have to get exchanged for pull out boxes or bins.

    I was thinking of buying these drawers, but i was sure something was different... i knew the other ones from years ago, and this new version really made me wonder how much robust and practical they are (not!!!). Thanks for the video!

    Had a Kallax shelving unit since I was 14, so 10 years now. They’re my favourite shelves and have moved flat with me.

    I was able to buy a 2x2 Expedit with 2 drawer units for about $40 total on Craigslist. I wasn't aware that Ikea had discontinued this brand and it's accessories, I love them! I guess I'll have to keep looking on craigslist for them. I really want a 4x4 as well

    Thank you for this video! I am going to order a Kallax unit and was thinking about getting the drawers and cabinet inserts. For what I want to store, the totes or even my own acrylic bins and totes will do the trick! Thanks also for showing the drawer widths and all the flimsy parts on inserts.

    I recently bought my first IKEA product, two black Kallax cube units and oak finish drawers and door inserts . Having nothing to compare with, I just fixed as advised and I am very happy with the finished result, maybe I would feel different if I had used Expedit before, but they all work fine and the drawers do too if screwed to the cube wall.

    Thank you for this comparison. Apparently the newer Kallax version of the drawers is not only wider but also higher. I can fit a DVD case perfectly in them, while they won't fit in the Expedit version.

    Thank you so much foe the comparison! I have 4 old Expedit inserts (sturdy, perfect fit, nice construction, orientation can be changed) and recently bought other 4 thinking I will get the same. Now, the new ones are this piece of junk/thin cardboard and the door. I was shock by the incredible bad quality (even for Ikea standard!). I follow the "instructions" and in any part it states that you have to literally destroy the Kallax by making 6 holes in order to fix the screws. So you need a drill! Also, since is so unstable and wobbly, it's difficult to fix the screws, so you will end up making several holes to attach it. I tried with one and it was almost impossible to align the door. I'm returning them!

    At the price you are paying, these aren't made for re-use.
    They are cheaper, but seem to gain in aesthetics & gain more space (looks weird to have the thick structure inside)

    I recently bought a 5x5 unit and was lucky it was a EXPEDIT with a few red inserts. I noticed right away that these where better than the current KALLAX ones. By careully looking for them I managed to get another 5x5 and other smaller units of EXPEDIT with about 40 red cubes. These are soo much better than the new one. Also the EXPEDIT shelf units are better in quality and dimensions.

    Thank you for this video. It answers my question about why my sister in law's is a better unit.
    Yes, the new inserts are not very good. I have damaged my Kallax trying to affix the door inserts with a screwdriver. I don't have a drill so all by hand. I am not very strong or handy so it was very hard going trying to screw the door in. I had to hold the hinge attachment whilst trying to screw in the screws, perspiration dripping, and it was sooo difficult on my own, with my hand/arm tiring because it took so long.
    Also one of the screws went in on an angle and I just could not rectify it. I went and had a look at my sister in law's set up, which she has on occasion changed around, and I realised it is not the same as mine. Hers was so easy to set up... I am very disappointed and very unimpressed with this poor offering from Ikea. The door insert is cheaply made and flimsy which is why it needs you to screw in the sides to your Kallax, thus permanently scarring your unit and ensuring you can't evolve or change the design as your needs change. I also want the drawers but they seem pretty bad too. I agree- I would rather pay more for a better product that I can change around.

    Yes, all this is true, and the new inserts are not very sturdy and can fall out easily as the screws fall out. Several years ago I made the trip to an Ikea, over an hour away, because I needed one more 2 by 4 Expedit shelf to complete the ones I already had for our school room. Upon arriving and finding the shelf unit, it was immediately obvious that the new Kallax was thinner and looked like it just had paper glued onto to it that could be peeled off. I was shocked and extremely disappointed. I didn't want to waste the money on these shelves. They looked awful compared to the Expedit ones I had at home. I bought some other items from there but continued to search on Craigslist for the older Expedit and bought it that way. Not only is it less expensive but also a much better quality. Very disappointing with Ikea's change of the Expedit to a Kallax. I'd rather pay a little more for a quality item. Thank you for the thorough and superbly made video.

      I agree... to save a little wood? Ok... i love the planet, but, with the problems these new ones will surely give, isn't that a bad approach? I don't trust this new ones, also, they need to be screwed into the shelf, and the rubber damps are not even aligned with the "cardboard" thin walls... BAD BAD ikea :\

  • @evriman123
    @evriman123 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Yes, require drilling into the shelves, but the worst part is, the screws just fall out in no time since you're essentially mounting a stiff piece of paper with a short screw onto particular board. The inserts are almost unusable, with the sides of inserts flopping about unattached, and my avoiding them since you have to handle it like it was some sort ancient and decrepit pet. Since I will be ditching the whole unit upon our next office move, I'm not getting how the switch from Expedit inserts "saves trees. "

    The old way was so much better. The whole modular thing is such a beautiful thing.... in ALL aspects of the home or office. Vesa mounts / articulating arms. Modular IKEA stuff that doesn't need any screwing down. We NEED more modular things. Sure, it's less wood... but... if IKEA would remove simply one color or style of most of their too-big / unpopular furniture, they could re-release these style drawers and doors, and still be good to the planet.... there's so much IKEA stuff that uses way too much wood that no one buys.... ugh.

      CDs fit with spines/labels on the side. Labels up they're too tall by about 3-4 mm... really a shame.
      DVDs and BluRays fit with spines up, barely. More room on the top drawer than on the bottom drawer by a few mm.
      None of them will fit them side by side, so you will be left with lots of room on the side.

    For the doors honesty I don't know why Ikea just doesn't predrill the screwholes for the door hinges in the the sides of shelves from the factory on both sides of each opening. Than all they would need is to supply the door front, hinges and hardware in the door kit. No need for the particle board insert. Just screw the hinges to the shelf and hang the door. They could do the same thing for the drawer kit. Eliminate the insert and design it so the tracks attach directly to the sides of the shelf openings.

    • @djbrownie1
      @djbrownie1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because some people don't plan on using any inserts at all, why would you want holes in the sides of your shelves? thats just tacky. The old style is so much better, just build it and slide it into the opening, job done.

    • @andrewhaines8603
      @andrewhaines8603 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@djbrownie1 they could provide some neat covers to hide the holes if you don't plan on using them. There are people who do this already if you search. It would make more sense to me to fix the doors direct to the frame. I have a Kallax shelf that I store my vinyl in, but one of our guinea pigs has taken a liking to the plastic sleeves I use so I'm looking for a suitable door to fit. The old Bonde glass doors used to fit, but very hard to find second hand. The Billy range was a fantastic,, versatile system, well made and used real wood veneer, but now it's all plastic or paper foil. How is that better for the environment? I haven't been to IKEA for a number of years as the quality has dropped. We buy second hand and sometimes upcycle stuff as it's better made and more individual.

    Methinks you are overly concerned about screw holes.
    First up is IF you'll ever actually ever want to reconfigure. I'd bet 95% never MOVE drawers OR doors. It's not like you'll decide that drawers would be easier down by the floor, than in an upper row.. Secondly, it's just too easy to fill and touch up the holes on the off chance you do decide to move one. On a white Kallax, I'd challenge anyone to stand 3' back and spot a screw hole filled with even Alex caulk for $2 from Walmart. Lastly, most use cases for removing an insert, would be to fill the cubicle with something like books, which will readily conceal screw holes anyway.
