2 KM SUCCESS STORY with HC-12 - going beyond 1800 meters!

  • We achieved a range of over 2 KM with the HC-12.
    On one of our other videos, we saw that makers were having problems with achieving decent range with their HC-12 wireless modules with Arduino. We decided to do a field test to see what range / distance could be achieved.

    In our first HC-12 range test we did NOT get any good results. However, in our second long range test we bit not only get the 1800 meters (1.8 KM) but we passed over 2 KM.
    We did use FU4 mode, but we did not use full transmit power.

    Thanks for all the good feedback. It warms our heart and gives us the energy to make more. We have spent a lots of time in this video to solve the issues that people had with the HC-12.
    Remember to write comments, The first winner of two original HC-12 has been randomly picked, the next winner will be picked after a week and then after a month.

      DIY TECH BROS after closely inspecting the ones I purchased on Amazon and eBay just a few weeks ago I’ve discovered that I do indeed have the official HC-12 modules. After setting the mode to FU4 with the AT commands sketch I got slightly more improvement.
      I’ve read that you shouldn’t power them over the Arduino USB. I’m assuming that means these need a regulator and to be powered by something other than the Arduino 5v pin. I also put a 1N4007 diode to drop the voltage below 4.5. I also put a 22uF capacitor on the power and ground pins of the HC-12. Still having issues. So my next question is about the antennas. Which antenna did you have the most success with in your experiment?

    Try building and using a 8 stages collinear coax antenna at the base station. It's going to blow your mind. Also to raise the range even more, use an SDR as your receiver at the base station and add LNA before input.

    Very helpful video guys! Thank you! So even when you set up the "bad" HC-12 modules right with AT commands, the output power is way less, right? But what about the receiving sensitivity, is that also a problem? Like if I use the "original" module to transmit and one of the "bad" ones to receive. Do you think the range is also decreasing in comparison to only use the "original" ones?
    Thanks!

    Hi!
    Just seeing that you are still replying :)
    This is an awesome video.
    I am using the same sensor and I have one transmitter and 4 receivers. but i have only a few meters range. i want to increase it and the first thing that I will do is increase the power using AT commands. and secondly, I didn't add capacitors to it. can you tell suggested schematics that how you have connected diode and capacitors and also capacitors of what value?
    Thanks

    • @DIYTECHBROS
      @DIYTECHBROS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi!
      The recommended capacitor value is anywhere between 22 uF and 1000uF. But for this video we went extreme, with one fast (22 nF) and two bigger, but slower capacitors (belive it was a 22uF + one 1000uF that also covers the Arduino as well.)
      BUT, when using an original HC-12 we get ranges far beyond a few meters even without any capacitors just using a powerbank.
      So, are you sure you are not using a bad clone?

    • @DigitalProfitPulse07
      @DigitalProfitPulse07 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DIYTECHBROS no i am not sure about clone. Should i change that, and can you recommend the procedure?
      And also about the transmit power, how much it should be?

    • @DIYTECHBROS
      @DIYTECHBROS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi!
      You do not need much transmit power to reach beyond a few meters. So I would start by making sure you are not using a clone. There is a link in the description to a version that we have tested.
      It should reach many hundred meters in its default mode.
      So the question is not how much should it be set, but how low can you set it and still receive a signal.
      Hope it helps!

    • @DIYTECHBROS

      2K is the range we and others are getting in open range, out of the city, clear weather og well placed antennas.
      Placed in a city environment with noice for a stable reception 2K is way “out of range”.

      1. The method and transfer rate is not well suited.

      Only if you use an intermediate device. Obviously HC12 is 433Mhz, and WiFi is either 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz depending on standards. However, an arduino connected to laptop (either via usb or wifi) can retransmit that data to remote arduino via HC12.

    I would like to ask with urgency, whats your experience with this module indoors? How many concrete (about 6"in thick) walls do you think the signal can penetrate? and how much reduction in distance due to these walls? I starting to think that HC12 is more reliable than NRF24l01. Thank you for doing these test and showing the difference between fakes and original chips.

    • @DIYTECHBROS
      @DIYTECHBROS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I prefer using the HC-12 over NRF24L01 in most cases. There are some issues with the HC-12 as well (Serial communication is not the fastest and can delay your loop. And it is slow if you need to transfer a lot of data.)
      But, for sensor data it is perfect.
      I have not been able to test it though multiple concrete walls. But I have testet it though two wood floors and one concrete - with success :-)
      Note that difference in reinforcement will influence the results.
      Hope it helps!

      The purpose of the capacitors is to make sure there is enough energy (current) available for the transmit signal. Transmitting a signal requires high peaks of current. And if your power source can't deliver the current needed, exactly when needed, the signal will be weaker and lose range.

      Sorry guys, I'm still a little bit confused how to spot working modules from modules I shouldn't buy. Would be awesome if you can help me out again with these questions:
      1.) As mentioned, they're using different ICs. At 3.50 you can see that 2 ICs are different from each other. Not only the tranceiver IC, also the IC next to the tranceiver IC. You guys said, that the working ones use the si4438 chip while the others use the si4463 chip. So the working ones you bought use the si4438 Chip and the other IC next to the si4438 is also smaller compared with the bad ones? So can I spot bad ones by simply looking at the other IC, if it's the bigger one, it's a bad module, and if it's the smaller one it's a working one? Or isn't it important because they are randomly using different ICs and the important one is only the si4438?
      2.) Because of that I'm confused with the ones in your link. The title says "si4438" which is good! But on the picture you can clearely see that the other IC is the big one. But as I said I don't know if all the bad ones use the bigger IC next to the main tranceiver IC. But also if you zoom in and look carefully, there's an si4463 on the picture. Does Banggood only copied the product photos but are shipping the working modules?
      I appreciate your help!
