  • That day I made a serious mistake taking off in unpredictable conditions, during very strong gusts of wind. In trying to save my life, I made a few more mistakes in the pilot, including throwing a stock that did not open. Fortunately, I manage to get out of trouble and land safely on the ground

Thank you Greg for sharing this video. wow, what a thrill ride!
It looks like you pushed speed bar very early on (unless this is your harness' leg strap that you're using, which I doubt) - good thing on using it early!
If that's the case, when you pulled big ears you were on full speed bar. It is safer to pull big ears first and then to push bar, and you were a little lucky not to get a frontal collapse right then. (However that luck didn't last long, and I understand that you were under tremendous stress!)
If I were you I wouldn't be pulling big ears at that incident, since you were flying backwards on full speed bar. and you'd be flying backwards even faster with the ears on. I would stay on full bar, and hopelessly gain altitude and drift backwards, mainly looking up at my canopy to make sure it stays open, and looking rearwards to look for landings behind the mountain I took off from.
another point: When you're on the speed bar, hold your C's instead of your brakes. and pull for some tension in them too. It's kind of scary to control from your C's in such wild conditions, but the flight gets a lot smoother while you're on the speed system.
after gaining some altitude you might get a relief in the wind (being outside of the ventury) or... could get stronger. in that case, at least I might be able use the gained altitude to turn around and glide with the wind, away from the mountain, hopefully past the lee turbulence too. It takes a couple of seconds before you reach your full speed on the bar, and then you'd want to stay on full bar and keep the glider straight above you using only the C's. Once you get somewhat off the speed system - the glider has to rock backwards, get more altitude, slow down, and surge forward again in order to stabilize. you're trying to keep this energy exchange down to minimum, and fly as fast as you can.
Ears could get messed up, cravated, and they cost you both speed and your brakes control. Probably a bad time to use them.
releasing the bar+big ears was the right thing to do, since you got an assymetrical collapse.
Then, it seems like you can probably work on your active piloting. there were very little inputs coming from you, especially before the big frontal collapse - you had a lot of time to brake the surge forward.
I wonder (like others in the comment section) when was that reserve last repacked. To everyone watching this: No question that the gear was not up to spec. The throw was great, a proper reserve would have not stayed in its bag like this one did.
It would have been better if you let go of the brake toggle first, and it seems like it was even worth a couple of seconds of your time in your case, even if you had to get your fist out of the brake loop, because evidently your glider was still flying and pointed into the wind, and your reserve might've only partially opened from that altitude (or... as it happened, not at all).
But accidents happen quickly - and throwing your reserve was a good call!
    A few more things:
1.When shit hits the fan, tighten your legs to the bottom of your seat. This reduces your angular momentum, and gets you reoriented under your wing faster. This is true for all harnesses.
    2. Look up more. You can get information from the glider quicker from your eyes than your bum. on your next SIV, try to make it a habit to lean back into the harness and lift your head & eyes as much as possible.
    3. practice lots of SIV maneuvers! I think it's really important to practice _without_ an instructor (once you know what you're doing) (with a life vest/boat/above water) so you really know your techniques!
    4. We all make mistakes. Thanks for sharing yours! It's a valuable learning tool. I also hope this comment will be valuable in some way to you or to others. cheers!
Edit: Haha I just found out 'Ari in the air' has a video about blown backs. It's nice to hear that he's exactly on the same page as I am on this topic!

It's very possible that while estimating the wind conditions at takeoff the pilot felt nothing but a nice breeze, coming from a good takeoff direction. It looks like the pilot hit a very strong wind shear coming from the left side of the mountain about 3 seconds after the video started, and prior to that he had a short smooth flight. That's why it's important to check the weather forecast. We can't see the air we fly in, so gather your information before taking off.
But even if you studied the forecast, fly for long enough / fly cross country / fly somewhere new, and you might find yourself flying in such conditions you regret taking off!

Hi Greg! I used this video in my class tonight. I didn't see anyone else comment on this, but It looks like you spun your glider right before the reserve toss and that would have been because the toggle was still in your hand as you went for the reserve handle. Lots of adrenaline going at that point i'm sure.
Glad you were okay and thankful you shared this video so we could all learn some valuable lessons!

There is an object lesson here. There is a defined operating window for flying a paraglider and this is outside that. The wind is too strong here and he shouldn’t have launched. As he gains height quickly, you can clearly see he is flying backwards. That is a bad position to be in, it is also difficult to recover from. As he travels ‘over the top’ of the hill he is launching from, he will experience ‘rotor’, which is where the wind begins to curl down over the spot where he is flying and can force him down into the ground very quickly. A collapse was pretty much inevitable. On top of that, he threw his reserve ‘chute when he was much too low for it to be of any use. A reserve will only save you from a complete unrecoverable collapse but you need around 600 feet for that to be effective. As you can see it didn’t inflate and I don’t think it even left the shroud it is packed in. All in all a very lucky escape. It could’ve been much worse. As my flying instructor always told me many years ago, “It is much better being down here wishing you were up there, than the other way around!”

You can deploy a reserve pretty low. I had a full frontal collapse at 200 feet and the wing came back above me with a full twist and 50% cravat. I deployed my reserve and it opened before impact. The entire episode took 6.5 seconds with max 10m/s sink (All checked on my GPS and track log) I was fortunate to walk away with no injury at all.

I think this pilot was lucky to get away with this , hopefully they have learnt a valuable lesson as can pilots who have watched this.
Assessing the weather conditions seems to be the biggest mistake they made , the reserve deployment and its lack of opening could have been caused by a number of issues , I remember repacking a reserve parachute for a mate once , he hadn't repacked it for a few years and I'm sure it would not have opened it was completely compressed together , repack your reserve inline with the manufacturer's instructions.

Strong conditions on launch. Big wing. Lucky didn't get blown to the backside rotor rapids while imitating king-size bed sheets with strings attached.
Pilot lost the control game early on. The pilot's mind was too soft and dull. The mind must remain stronger than the conditions, always.

Ok , old hangglider pilot from the 90's here
What I don't get about this is how you would handle the same condition if you were soaring right around the top end of your wing's speed range and a cycle that came through that did the exact same thing. My point is, it really don't matter if you launched into strong conditions or that you flew into strong conditions. Your wing simply has a narrow speed range or at the very least it's not fast enough to be flown safely. It's pretty much why paragliders are not my choice. I have been blown out and into a rotor before while trying to penetrate up wind and it's not pretty. I'd hate to have even less speed range and a collapsible wing but that sure is what paraglider appear to be to me.

There are 365 days in a year. Plenty of flyable days.
Chose those days, not days like this with 50kmh wind and backwards flying and 20m/s gust elevators, if you want to live a long and happy life.
