    You made it look so easy I'm ready to go out and try every one of those. That Lee side landing with the Downs draft. I couldn't quite catch any of the technique on that and I've never heard anybody doing that it wasn't just miserable and betting on a hard landing.

    • @fairbanksairriders
      @fairbanksairriders ปีที่แล้ว

      We used to fly in the lee all the time when winds were too strong mid day on the windward side. We watched the birds fly smoothly in the lee without flapping or fluttering. Often there are calm updrafts and lee side thermals. Smooth Skies.

    • @markmcgoveran6811
      @markmcgoveran6811 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fairbanksairriders what about the Lee side problem where you get in the sinking air and you come towards the ground too fast. Can you somehow swoop and flare differently to adjust for that downdraft?

    • @fairbanksairriders
      @fairbanksairriders ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hard landings happen on the windward side of the mountain as well… it takes time and practice.

    • @markmcgoveran6811
      @markmcgoveran6811 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fairbanksairriders I've heard you may not be able to land on the windward side of the mountain if the wind is blowing uphill.

      @@Kralsteny it was a local comp in switzerland. He even checked the hiking map when picking that spot to make sure the path is near. Saved himself a few 100m vertical hike, in a competition that doesn't really matter - which tells you he did it kinda casually :-D

    • @mcbrite
      @mcbrite ปีที่แล้ว

      I could explain, if there is anything in particular? You likely mean the way he is able to land "uphill"?
      1. You accelerate the glider to full speed, now it is filled with LOTS of energy and going fast towards the steep wall!
      2. As you get close to the wall you come off the accelerator, you instantly start converting some of that energy into lift, making you actually rise up! (I didn't pay attention, but you MAY even hear the vario beeping)
      3. When you are only a couple of meters out you convert the rest of the energy by breaking completely, slowing you down enough to touch down safely.
      Disclaimer: Since the breaks, the C handles on the risers AND the accelerator on his foot all affect lift in some way, not every pilot will do it the exact same way and every wing will be a little different... On a beginner wing, you could only do a much milder form of what's shown in the video, for example.
