Samaltau is a song based on real history. Kazakhstani young men were forced by the Tsar of Russia to become soldiers. The instruments recreate the sounds of wolves, the wind, birds and other things this young man hears as he walks away from his beloved home and country to enlist. He doesn’t know if he will return or if he will die. It is even more poignant today, with the war going on in the Ukraine. Dimash is a world ambassador for peace, and his voice is unmatched.

The most cadenced part of the music refers to the march of Kazakh soldiers who drag themselves into battle like hopeless souls. At its most epic, the song can represent the very battle that will end the lives of young soldiers!

In the intro, the amazing Kazakh artist Olzhas Qurmanbek plays an instrument called kobyz. Dimash and Olzhas form an amazing tandem.

The song is about a 28 year old soldier leaving his home on the Samaltau mountain in 1916 to walk to fight in WW1, not knowing if he will ever see his elderly parents or his beloved home again…

All instruments shown in the clip are Kazakh folk. "Kobyz", a two-stringed bowed instrument, best able to convey the sounds of the steppe, the closest to the soul of every Kazakh, after the "dombra" (hung on the wall of the studio). A wind instrument similar to a flute is called "sabyzgy", and it imitates the voices of birds well, and the sound of water drops creates a "rain stick", a hollow instrument with small pebbles inside. From Kazakhstan with love ❤️🇰🇿🙏

The 2 stringed instrument is the Quobiz, (koe bish) from the nomads of the Kazakh steppes, the strings are made of gut and horsehair. Dimash is a Kazakh, a seperate group from Kazakhstanies, and a direct descendent of them. He lives traditionally, the extendend family under one roof. They do not leave home before marriage, the males bring their brides home to live. Terrific reaction !

In 1916 Russia was at war and running out of food and soldiers so they went into Kazakhstan and forced the young men to leave their families and become soldiers. This song is from the perspective of one of these young men lamenting about leaving his aging parents with no one to take care of them. The sounds represent the animals and birds in the wilderness of the steppes. Dimash is outstanding, but these musicians are world class also 🎶🎶🎶🎶

doesn't that Kobyz combined with the flute and rainstick, just blow your mind...such unique sounds....it is the sound of the soul of the Asian Steppes. It's simply incredible, especially when Dimash adds in his powerful, lyrical Kazakh vocals.

The string instument named Qobyz and its player Olzhas Qurmanbek are prominently featured in Dimash's music video Qairan Elim and the stage performance Stranger.

The instrument is the Kobyz. It's a 2 stringed instrument, with one string made up of 75 horse hairs, and the other string made from 60 horsehairs (and the curved bow which is made with 40 horse hairs). The strings aren't pushed down to a fret, but rather are played with pressure by either the fingernail, or by a pad on the finger, as well as the tones varied by the pressure of the bow.

His Master's thesis was on global folkloric music and instruments and their importance in cultural development and impact on society. You see that reflected in much of his music, and his soon to complete Doctorate, Musicolgy in composition, will give him the educational weight to compose seriously, a life goal. He is considered a scholar among academics.

Staying with long notes. Actually not a note but the longest recorded phrase.
It was accomplished by “ John Gary” in a song titled “ If You Love Me Really Love Me”
( an obscure song from his “ So Tenderly” album. ). He sustains the last refrain PHRASE 13 words ( not notes) for 30 SECONDS!!
No doubt one of the longest “One Breath Phrases” ever recorded!
Please TH-cam John Gary “if you love me really love me” and utter OMG OMG !

When Kazakhstan belonged to Russia (in 1916/17, World War I), young Kazakhs were forced by the Russian Empire to leave their homes and fight for many years until their total massacre. The story of one of these young people, who marches in desperation to a war that is not his, in addition to the sadness of leaving his parents, very old, with no one to care for and the certainty that he will never see the mountains ("tau") of Kazakhstan again. again. this wonderfully sad song! In addition to Dimash's talent, we have a wonderful setting and two fantastic musicians: Olzhas Qurmanbek, Master in playing the Qobyz (Kobyz, which looks like a violin: An instrument of Turkish origin, sacred in Kazakhstan) the other who plays the “Rainstick”! A supernatural journey to the plains of Kazakhstan through music!

That Instrumet is a Kobyz. The man playing it is Olzhas Qurmanbeck, he is a real Master. In many of Dimashes traditional Songs You find him too. Qairan Elim, Stranger, and more. You are very good, Love your reaction.

I don’t know whether you had the subtitles on? This was written by an anonymous person, presumed to be one of the young Kazakhs drafted to fight for Russia, leaving his homeland if Samaltau to die in a faraway land for reasons unrelated to him. He regrets not being able to stay and look after his elderly parents and probably never seeing his homeland again.
Thank you for the great reaction! Yes, those instruments mimicked in the opening natural sounds, wolves, wind, etc…

    Samaltau
    Mountain breeze
Mountain breeze, my amazing country, my endless lake,
What days await me as a soldier,
You keep coming into my mind from time to time,
My amazing homeland, where I was born and raised
    I wasn't riding, I was walking,
    Even slower than walking,
    Been strolling for 15 days
    In the direction of Omsk
I'm at the age of two cycles, the year of the cow
By the will of Fate, I went farther away
Mountain breeze, my amazing country, you're left behind
From the hollow field, we are the only ones
    I had parents,
    Of progressed age,
    Since this song was written,
    It's been 16 years.
Mountain breeze, my amazing country, my endless lake,
What days await me as a soldier

    Speaking of John Gary
now I am going to turn you and your readership on to the most underrated male pop vocalist of all time. He had a 4 octave vocal range and the most celestial angelic voice and vibrato. He passed away in the 1990s at the age of 66 but left behind over 150 songs-all the great ones. He was Elvis Presley and Johnny Carson’s favorite vocalist! I hope you will react privately to 5 songs that I will list below ( I say “privately”because no one will recommend him).
    Please TH-cam the following:
    “Once Upon A Time”
( the best rendition of this song ever recorded. All the well known professional vocalists like Tony Bennett, Andy Williams have sung it but none come close to Gary’s angelic rendition)
    “Autumn Leaves”
( a popular song sung by many vocalists, but John Gary uses his 4 octaves to SOAR into the angelic realm.
    “ Something Simple”
( an obscure one from his “ So Tenderly” Lp that will open the floodgate of your heart and soul. Again, he SOARS!
And finally, “ The Sound Of Music”
( everyone remembers the movie and Julie Andrews wonderful rendition but few knew that John Gary recorded it FIRST from his “Catch A Rising Star” Lp /CD and his voice merges with the violin at the end of the song.
And speaking of the violin, here are a couple of reasons why John Gary’s voice was so electrifying and angelic.
His mother was a Professional Concert Violinist and when John was 6 or 7 years old, she would play the violin and have her son vocalize to the sound of the violin. Another reason was because John was a professional DEEP SEA DIVER and invented an AQUALUNG and set a WORLD RECORD for remaining under water over TWO HOURS!
Well, that’s it. I hope I enticed you to listen to these 5 John Gary recordings.
All love from Miami Beach , Florida,
    -Al
