I was privileged to meet the flute player at the NY concert pre party and asked him to show me how he was playing his flute (I am a flute player); it was very strange, only half the mouth rests on the flute, leaving an opening for the air to come back up, and the blowing is almost like a “chewing”, maybe giving the whispered sound. He didn’t speak a word of English but took his time explaining to me how he did it all. Everyone who surrounds Dimash is amazingly nice!

@Patricia Palmer Oh I´m glad you could experience the Kazakh society which is both, very traditional and modern. I was there several times in the mid/late 80th and in Mongolia too. It was the first time that I really got into the culture/music of both countries/peoples and it was like a "awakening" for me as European who did know the history of both. Since then I heard a lot of music from this particular region. I´m also obsessed with throat-singing (Mongolian, Altai-Kai, eca.). Dimash is doing a great job showing the world what his country and people can offer us.

Dear Marie-Josee, thank you very much for sharing your emotions with us!
By the way: both musicians were at the time of the NY concert students of the same university, where also Dimash made his masters degree in composition. Their names are: Olzhas Qurmanbek (he plays here qobyz) and Sanjaj Almishev (he plays here sybyzgy and rainstick). Olzhas Qurmanbek is also to seeing in the new video of Dimash Qairan Elim...All three young people here are multiinstrmentalists.

Kobyz is the grandfather of all bowed musical instruments. Such as violin, cello, double bass. In general, the musical culture of the Kazakhs is very ancient and brought almost to perfection. Thank you for your reaction. You are perfection.

This Song is about World War 1, the russian Tsar ordered young Kazakh Men to fight in this War, and this Song is about the Thoughts and Emotions of a young Soldier who had to leave his home.
He sings about the Beauty of his Homeland (Samaltau means Mountain Samal) and his deep sorrow if he will ever return, what will happen to him in this War and to his elderly Parents.
Will they survive without him? .. etc.

All nations and peoples tormented by Russians sing similar songs about occupation, injustice, repression and violence as well as fighting for justice, independence and courage of their people, and, all of them telling one simple idea and feeling - about their love to native land and nation values.
That what russians will NEVER understand.

This is about a young man who was pulled from his home & family & aged parents to go to war. He is weary and walking slowly and wondering what will become of him as a soldier and will he ever see his home & family again. This was when Kazakhstan was trying to gain it's independence. Dimash does the most gorgeous singing in this! Thank you & good to see you do Dimash again!

Dimash was invited to perform at this years Tokyo Jazz Festival but due to the pandemic it was first cancelled (and he was very disappointed) then it was done as an online concert. So he took part by performing 2 songs, Samaltau and S.O.S which he live streamed from his home in Astana Kazakhstan, this is his music room/studio in his house. The instruments are a Kobyz, the stringed instrument a bit like a viola, it has two strings of horse hair and has a 5,000 year history, its played here emulating the sounds of the Kazakh steppe, the wolves and other wild animals. The flute is called a Sybyzgy and is emulating the Kazach Golden Eagle and other birds, the Kazakh rainstick (bamboo filled with gravel or rice) is emulating the wind in the grass of the steppe, plus the water running off from the Samal mountain. The instruments on the wall are Dimash's collection of various Dombra, plus a shaman drum and a jetigen, a Kazakh zither. I absolutely love this song, I first heard it at the Silk Road Film Festival last year and it stunned me. Here he is performing this powerful song sitting cross legged on a piano stool, he always makes it look so easy when in reality this is a difficult song to sing this well. Bravo Dimash 🌺🌹🌺🌹🌺
Here is the full story of what this terribly sad song is about. Dimash sings from the perspective of a 28 year old soldier who is thinking of his aging parents, his home country and the sacred mountain Samal Tau www.iias.asia/the-newsletter/article/time-ordeal-story-1916-revolt-central-asia
Just an added interest piece, Dimash has just begun his PhD in musicology, he is very academically gifted too, he completed his masters in composition this year with honours and a score of 100% 😃

This. Is. Exquisite. Wow. I love everything about this. The musicians. The instruments. The tone. The haunting melodies. His VOICE! (How IS he singing with this much power from this cross-legged seated position, anyway?! Whoa!). This is a singing-from-the-mountain-tops kind of song, making use of the echo chamber of the world. And ... lovely reaction, Christi! I especially liked your noting the change from minor to major and it's possible meaning and 'mood' change. It was not something I'd have been able to articulate this way, and this was very enriching.

With tears, I listen and look up.
I live in the Pacific N.W. where fires are raging.
In this song, it sounds like animals crying on the mountain as our mountains are burning. This song with all the elements such as the instraments and the vocals seem to be crying and in pain. But it is also an element of hope sung from Dimash's soul to relay a message. Its like he has summoned our God, a cry for help.
Please pray for us all, whole towns have burned to the ground and so many deaths of People and countless animals as we burn.

    Song background:
    dimash.fandom.com/wiki/Samaltau_(Самалтау)
    English translation
My dearest motherland with its immense lake Shalkar.
I wonder what my days will be like when I become a solder
Thoughts of you arise over and over in my mind
My precious land where I was born and came of age
I’m not riding, but walking slowly
Not even walking, but dragging myself
I have been struggling for 15 days
    I am approaching Omsk
    I’m twice a dozen years old (2 mushel *)
And was born in the Year of the Ox / Cow (**1889)
Forced by the will of fate to travel to distant land
    Samal mountain, my precious motherland
    I have left you behind
We are like a lost herd of horses gone astray
I have both my father and my mother
    They are of advanced age
What drove me to sing this sing is,
The mourning and heartache of the year 1916…
    Samal mountain, my dearest motherland
    With its immense lake Shalkar,
I wonder what my days will be like when I become a solder

Dear, (I think by now you are a Dear). "SamalTau" is inspired by the time in 1916 when Russia conscripted hundreds of thousands of the men of Dimash's beloved Kazakhstan, to fight in their invasive, aggressive wars. Most never saw home again. One of the soldiers, half-resting during a lull in their crawling/dragging along toward the place where they would fight, managed to write a brief, sketchy letter about his situation. Since he was from the mountainous SamalTau region, the song based on that letter bears the same name. When Dimash sings of this, it is to express his grief and to mourn the loss of his long-ago brothers, who had been forced to leave their families, many of whom died of starvation as a result of losing perhaps the only healthy man in the family. Dimash feels this loss intensely, as you can see, here, where he has created a "new" voice for the purpose of singing about this tragedy. By singing this song, he reminds his people never to forget those ancestors who were forced to leave their people. You can experience (in his voice) Dimash's wrenching pain at knowing how they suffered, both those who went for soldiers, and those who waited hopelessly for them to come back home.

    • @kirillr8166
      @kirillr8166 4 ปีที่แล้ว

BS. Completely. Kazakhs have NEVER fought for Russia. In the Russian Empire, 42 ethnic groups were completely free from military service. Including the Kazakhs. In 1916, under the conditions of a bloody war (Russia was losing 200-220 thousand people at the front every month), it was decided to attract several hundred thousand people to work in the rear. Many even worked away from the front lines, at railway stations or seaports. Moreover, they were paid money for it, in addition to food, housing and clothing at the state expense. This applied not only to the Kazakhs, but also to other indigenous peoples of Central Asia (Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Sarts, Turkmens, Tajiks, Dungans, Uighurs), Siberia and Transcaucasia. ALL these people returned home in the middle of 1917.

First time hearing this song, I’m in chills the whole time and bawling crying. I usually don’t put any captions to his song, and yet especially with this song I can feel the longing, the desperation the sadness . The way he pronounce the consonants is very crisp and gives a special impact. After discovering Dimash i listen to his songs only even my young kids. It became an educational as we talk about the instruments the languages and the countries and the culture. Me and husband loves different cultures as I’m immigrant myself and multilingual and we’ll traveled and have Kazakh friend. And that’s important for me for my children to learn. I
Love that Dimash is introducing this instruments, history and culture because we can learn a thing or two. I never desire to go to concert until Dimash came. I was a little bit disappointed that I just discovered him a month ago and miss his concert in NY. I hope one day he’ll come back to US for a concert because I already told my husband we are going wherever whenever it will be.

At the beginning of the song, the sounds of the Great Steppe of Kazakhstan at night were masterfully imitated on the Kazakh ancient folk instrument KOBYZ. We hear howl wolves, barking dogs, the cries of cranes, the noise of water in the river... /// The song "Samal Tau" is considered folk. Its plot is connected with the events of 1916. That year, many men were mobilized for World War I, which was in Europe. /// The guy walks along the steppe road at night and sings a song about having left his native home and old parents, native mountains "Samal Tau". The guy doesn't know what lies ahead in the war. He doesn't know if he'll return from the war to his home. /// Dimash sings this song in Kazakh. The song premiered on October 20, 2019 in China at the closing of the 6th Silk Road International Film Festival th-cam.com/video/1NkoFc-bQ_s/w-d-xo.html

The open bodied 2 string instrument is a Kobyz. I think its origins are in Turkey, but it is traditional to Kazakhstan and other central Asian countries as well. I don't know much about the instruments being played, but their sound fascinates me. And, I loved Dimash's performance....even better in this stripped down version, than the on-stage performance. Although both are excellent, something about this one, raised its impact. Perhaps removal of all the staging and lighting also removed sensory inputs, leaving only Dimash's voice and the instrumentation underneath......No distracting influences. Mahalo for giving me my Dimash fix this morning.

.... simply love that song and performance! ❤️❤️❤️ The sounds from those instruments are so beautiful. Love that native and nature imprint on the melody. It creates a deep longing for something undefined in me. There are so much story telling, history and emotions built into both the lyrics and Dimash's insane beautiful voice.... you really sense his Kazakh heart and soul! Thank again for your awsome authentic reactions! 🙂👍❤️

He is THE bestest! He is so grand, yet so humble, woow! Bravo to his parents Svetlana and Kanat, they give an amazing education to their son, they taught him how to love his homeland, his people, traditions, music, customs and how to be advance, yet be himself and do not forget his roots. I bet the name Dimash is going to be so popular in the world and everyone will name their sons and grandsons after Dimash Q.

This song is the first of a series of Kazakh-themed songs by Dimash. His second one (and latest music video) is Qairan Elim, which Dimash also co-directed. You will see that he is not only a vocal but also a visual aesthete, and he uses the imagery to convey his message even stronger than he usually does with his vocals. I would like to highly recommend Qairan Elim as your next Dimash reaction video.

Hi Christi! Wonderful reaction 💖. I wanted to know what Dimash was singing. So, I tried to translate those lyrics from de Kazakh. But there's some words that I can't understand. Excuse me for that... The song is a lament, a young had leaving his land, and he missed it a lot, remembering his parents and his land.
I want to leave a comment, what a great artist Dimash is! He feels the song, he is in... I loved this song 😍 Thank you very much again dear. A great huge from 🇪🇸
Samal tau, wondrous my land, immense my lake,
What my life is going to be as soldat?
Comes to my mind over and over again
My poor land, where my navel-cord cut, washed me.
I am not riding, I’m trudging,
    Even slower, just drag myself.
    It’s been about fifteen days
    On way. I’m approaching Omsk.
My age is double mushel, from year of Cow.
The Fate has swept me away, far from my home,
Samal tau, my motherland is left behind,
We’re just a foal-herd that has lost its pastures.
    I have father and mother,
They both would reached elderly age.
I was compelled to make this song
By the grievous year of sixteen.
Samal tau, wondrous my land, immense my lake,
What my life is going to be as soldat?
I hope you like it 😉

It is mind blowing with beautiful music, scenery and special effects. No crazy vocals but super emotional. Make sure to go on DimashNews.com first to read about the song so you can understand it. Samaltau (Самалтау)
    Dimash Kudaibergen
Kazakh folk song In 1916, during the second year of Great War (World War I), the Russian Empire carried huge human and property losses. The burden of restocking was laid on subject nations. About 49 million hectares of fertile land were forcibly taken away during the war from Kazakhs. The owners were driven out into the barren wastes.

We don't mind you stopping and talking 😊 We've all see the song many, many times. We want to hear your thoughts on it! Thanks!! 💜🤗💜. He IS a gift to us indeed!! The one instrument is a Kobyz: a bow instrument with two strings. It was hollowed out of one whole wooden piece - juniper (arsha), maple, pine-tree and birch. The instrument consisted of three parts: head (bas), middle (base is keude) and lower part (ayak). The base is made in the form of an open bowl stretched downside. This lower part of the instrument is covered with leather (sounding board). The support (tiek) is established on it. Even in our days, the strings for kobyz are made of horse-tail. The bow has an arched shape and it looks like a bow weapon: the bun of horsehair is tied to both ends of the bent branch and fixed by the strong thread of camel wool. The performer enfolds the bow from aside with his hand.
