This piece shocked me with how easily it created imagery connected to the instrumentation. Maybe I've watched too many historical shows but for me this could quite easily become a soundtrack to something set in a more historical time. Dimash's singing in this was incredible and I really enjoyed hearing the music styles influenced from his part of the world. Let me know what imagery it created for you or whether it was even your cup of tea!

@@jvoxfox Julia, that's a lie. Kazakhs, among some ethnic groups in the Russian Empire, were not subject to mobilization in the active army and did not participate in combat operations. On June 25, 1916, Emperor Nicholas II issued the Highest order to attract a certain number of men from these peoples to work on the construction of defensive structures. Moreover, they were paid good money for these works. But as a result, an uprising broke out on the territory of present-day Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan under the banner of Gazavat (war against infidels). The brutal gangs attacked the peaceful Russian population (men fought on the fronts of the World War One). Thousands of Russian women, children and old people were mercilessly killed. The uprising was brutally suppressed. It saddens me that a talent of such magnitude as the Dimash, helps the distribution of ahistorical myths.

    English translation
    :
My dearest motherland with its immense lake Shalkar.
I wonder what my days will be like when I become a solder
Thoughts of you arise over and over in my mind
My precious land where I was born and came of age
I’m not riding, but walking slowly
Not even walking, but dragging myself
I have been struggling for 15 days
    I am approaching Omsk
    I’m twice a dozen years old (2 mushel *)
And was born in the Year of the Ox / Cow (**1889)
Forced by the will of fate to travel to distant land
    Samal mountain, my precious motherland
    I have left you behind
We are like a lost herd of horses gone astray
I have both my father and my mother
    They are of advanced age
What drove me to sing this sing is,
The mourning and heartache of the year 1916…
    Samal mountain, my dearest motherland
    With its immense lake Shalkar,
I wonder what my days will be like when I become a solder
Kazakhs, like many peoples of Asia, used the eastern calendar, where every 12 years they made 1 cycle (mushel). The hero of the song was 2 mushel, that is, he has already overcome the age of 24.
Year of the cow is 1889

I, too was transported outside, to the mountains, the smell of the wind rolling over snow, but also looking down into a valley. I found a picture of the highest mountain in Dimash’s country and that matched exactly what I had visualized. Dimash’s true power lies in his spirituality and that’s obvious to me in this song. Ancient words, ancient song, ancient musical instruments. Magic.

Thanks for your reaction! The instrument is called "Kobyz". This is an ancient instrument of the Kazakh people. The sound of the wind is the sound of the great steppe, imitation of the mooing of a cow, the barking of a dog, the howl of a wolf, the crowing of cranes and other sounds of nature, this is all kobyz.
The song of a young guy whom the authorities called to the First World War leaves his native place.

I think this song is about calling for past to help. I have no idea of the lyrics. So naturally you ... and I are ”on a horseback” for that is what human species did almost forever before arriving to this juncture. And it is a juncture. And we need to also call the past for help.
Stunning performance. Breathtaking because it reaches back to realisations that have almost been forgotten.

Thank you for kind reaction to Dimash Kudaibergen Kanatuly.🌸
Respectly, this enstrumant is neither erhu nor rebab. "Kobyz" was ancestor of them. Bowed instruments have originated in the equestrian cultures of Central Asia, an example being the Kobyz (Kazakh: қобыз) or kyl-kobyz is an ancient Turkic, Kazakh string instrument and then Mongolian instrument Morin huur:Turkic and Mongolian horsemen from Inner Asia were probably the world’s earliest fiddlers. Their two-stringed upright fiddles were strung with horsehair strings, played with horsehair bows, and often feature a carved horse’s head at the end of the neck. The violins, violas, and cellos we play today, and whose bows are still strung with horsehair, are a legacy of the nomads.
It is believed that these instruments eventually spread to China, India, the Byzantine Empire and the Middle East, where they inspired into instruments such as the erhu in China, the rebab in the Middle East, the lyra in the Byzantine Empire and the esraj in India. The violin in its present form emerged in early 16th-Century Northern Italy, where the port towns of Venice and Genoa maintained extensive ties to central Asia through the trade routes of the silk road.
The Erhu can be traced back to proto-Mongolic instruments which first appeared in China during the Tang Dynasty. (Tang Empire was an imperial dynasty of China that ruled from 618 to 907, with an interregnum between 690 and 705.) Kobyz belongs antic ages.
The kobyz (kopuz) was Korkut Ata's instrument. Korkut Ata (Dede Korkut, Korkyt Ata), who played kopuz, composed musical pieces, had a super human wisdom, foresaw future, doctor recovering the sick and was a kam, is believed to have lived near Sırderya river. It has been proved that the various narratives about Dede Korkut, except the two known copies were transformed into different kinds of narratives. Some of the mythological narratives, the source of legends starring Korkut, were transformed into legend and some were transformed into story and/or tale. Only two original copies, named as "Kitâb-ı Dedem Ḳorḳud Alâ Lisân-ı Tāife-i Oğuzân" and "Hikâyet-i Oğuznâme, Kazan Beğ ve Gayrı" called Book of Dede Korkut today, of this book has still remained today. (Dresden and Vatican copies) Korkut Ata is accepted as the father of Turkic music, creator of "Küy" and a legendary hero in Kazakhstan and all Turkic countries. The musical compositions are all interconnected by the epic stories that accompany them. The element encompasses social, cultural and moral values such as heroism, dialogue, physical and spiritual wellness and unity as well as respect for nature, and contains profound knowledge about the history and culture of Turkic-speaking communities. Inscribed in 2018 (13.COM) on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Wise women and men has used to play kopuz (since BC. 3000+). The other people may also played it. It is not forbidden but hard. Wise people are called "baksı" or "kam" in old Turkic culture. They worship "Tengri" (means "God"). Kopuz imitates nature: rivers, winds, trees, wolves, eagles, etc.
Antic Epics said that, "when the kopuz is played, the demons run away". When the kopuz is played, people chills, because evilness go away.
Anglo-Saxon language is not my mother tongue so I have mistakes. I am an amateur soprano coloratura and a linguist but Maybe an expert music professor may explane that differences so well than me. I prefer studying Sumerian than Anglo now.

Dimash sits in Kazakh. The instruments, if you listen carefully, convey the sounds of the Kazakh steppe. First, the wolves, which are chased away from the aul by the dogs, then the sounds of a cart, migratory geese and cranes, the sound of the wind and the murmur of a small river, and Dimash himself sings as it usually happens that he wants to sing (or yell if you can't sing) if you leave to the endless steppe, especially in spring, when tulips bloom and smells of young wormwood and hot earth ...

At last you have come to realise the function of the "waiting period" at the beginning of most of his performances...for the audience to settle in and especially for him (Dimash) immersing (working his mindset completely) into the storyline/journey he is about to enter, simultaneously alerting himself to his surroundings. Very important for any true storyteller. If you will, compare a comedian or satirist...
First time for me, too, listening to this song. Stunning composition, especially too on the mood of this song, related to the title... The title refers to a time during World War 1 when Russia suffered huge human and property losses and the Khazaks loss of land.
It will therfore be helpful if there were lyrics available to be better engaged with the song.
Your own commentary is also very engaging and helps in appreciating the artists. Well done. ❤

Ancient time musics take all of uss and leave us that ancient times. The Shamanism and the Paganism connect with nature and world. So ancient musics catche us in our depths. Because not only humans, alt things have their souls. Like Dimash's country Kazakhistan, in many Turkish country in Asia and Turkey has their roots of Shamanism. And all we are connect with everything wth our souls. Indıans of America have this connect with nature too.

Dimash śpiewaj i ciesz nasze serca spragnione piękna. This is fucked-up GOOD. Period.
    Melismatic embelisments, really? Ok.
I just think this is one of the most fabulous Dimash I’ve ever heard. This. Is. Epic.
Yet: what Vocalist, what music is better than this? My G-d, I love all, but this is.... something else.

It is a brilliant preform, I love this song over the rest, not taking anything away from his genius work, but this reminds me of my island in the Caribbean. I was born in a beautiful island in the Caribbean call: Puerto Rico, I live in NYC now and after 23 years I’m tired of city life. If I could move I bee in my island already but I can’t and it makes me really 😢 sad. I love this song, I mean the song has nothing to do with the island, I mine musically, our is of course more African, drums, maracas, guitars ( gat them from Spain when we were colony of them) I’m talking about the filling of it. I found the video incredible, I mine the piano on fire and him to in the fire, incredible.
This song makes me cry like a bitch, (sorry, no so much) it is what happens every time I hear this song.
The other song that does this to me, for completely different reasons , but it does nonetheless is: falling in love of Diana Can’t spell the last name, it is fine you did a video on this song to. This two songs every time, I have seen them a lot, falling in love more the. This one, but this one stand the hairs of my body plus I cry, it is a horrible site ( the ugly cry)
I love them both, plus I like that this song made you fill for the it, it is marvelous, just insanely beautiful!

    Mountain breeze
Mountain breeze, my amazing country, my endless lake,
What days await me as a soldier,
You keep coming into my mind from time to time,
My amazing homeland, where I was born and raised
    I wasn't riding, I was walking,
    Even slower than walking,
    Been strolling for 15 days
    In the direction of Omsk
I'm at the age of two cycles, the year of the cow
By the will of Fate, I went farther away
Mountain breeze, my amazing country, you're left behind
From the hollow field, we are the only ones
    I had parents,
    Of progressed age,
    Since this song was written,
    It's been 16 years.
Mountain breeze, my amazing country, my endless lake,
What days await me as a soldier

I never spoke directly about Dimash's work. Now is the time to say. Few words. What he evokes in us is admiration. Let me explain. Entities are low, they practice abduction. This is when you feel seduced and delighted, but, over time, disappointment comes. As if, part of you was stolen. As if you were lowered one step lower. Admiration, when a soul of a high order transfers you, by the forces available to this essence, an order of magnitude higher, to where you should be according to the plan of the Universe, if you follow your destiny, no matter what. He shows Us what we should be, according to the Creator's Plan. And the Soul no longer wants to go back. And you start to work, feeling the right direction. Possessing, perhaps, an innate wisdom in this, he chose the most difficult and thorny path for himself. In his creativity, he follows where he feels the greatest resistance to his divine instruments. And the only protection that can be for him is the love and gratitude of those who admired him. His only armor on this path, our sincere love and gratitude.

Thanks for your quali comment - greetings from Berlin :) Music of all ethnicities on our earth is coming closer and closer to us through the internet. And so the people of this world are moving closer and closer together. The song ´Samaltau´ is a wonderful example... that came to us from a magical world of our fathers and ancestors to UNITE us as a human species.
Therefore, beyond the corona virus, climate change and the wars of this world: there is another dimension that I like much better and in which I can let myself go.

Yes in Australia Dimash is well known I think
I am living in Australia and discovered Dimash on the Chinese show I am a singer in 2017 and I was immediately hooked and Dimashified
Ever since then I listen to Dimash every night
He is an outstanding young man and just amazing
By the way I am not from Australia so I can connect very much to songs in other languages especially Russian and central Asian folk music which must be part of my heritage from the east
I am 67 years old and never heard a voice like Dimash and he always brings me to tears but in a good way
Kasakhstan be very proud to have such a treasure like Dimash
Wish you all good health and best wishes and lots of love from Australia

Dimash is without question the most gifted vocalist I've ever heard, and I've been around many decades. We love him as much for his humility, generosity, love of family and love of country as we do for his skill, talent, stage presence, poise, ability to touch our emotions, dedication, discipline, (I could go on and on!)
