      When i learned to stop having expectations of others and just focused on myself, it was amazing how much more confident, happy and free I felt.

    Please remember...just because you're upset it doesn't mean you can snap and get into someone's face and belittle them. Take a breather and calmly communicate to the person your issue or explain to the person that you didn't appreciate the thing that made you upset. Communication is key, but it needs to be done in a relaxing and calm way, done in an anger or violent way is automatically blocked by the person that's being attacked. Humble opinion.

      There's an emotional bully at work. This person will make personal comments, belittle people, ignore others in conversation and block work of others. Many of us have tried to talk to her for years but it hasn't improved.
      How do you stand up to a person like this? Because when others held their ground, this bully lashes out even more.

      @@ThirumahalS the sad truth is that if that person has behaved like that for a long time it's because management has allowed it (unless no one has talked to management about it) and when that happens there's not much you can do. I left my previous job after 3.5 yrs because of office toxicity (management was doing nothing because they themselves would look bad if brought up to the CEO).

    Emotional health is so important. And I admire anyone with the courage to speak and teach it.
    Emotions are what make us human; it’s uncomfortable, being vulnerable. Having difficult conversations. But it’s so nice when we can relate to one another on a deeper level.
    It took going through a divorce (I’m in the middle of one of the hardest, confusing and uncertain times of my life). But I am learning so much about myself. Learning that I have the power to feel whatever I need to feel; that emotions can come and go, and THEN I can choose how I want to act.
    If it were not for my therapist, my aunt/life coach, my friend/counsellor, and all the books and podcasts I’ve been reading/listening to…all overlapping each other…saying the SAME things in their own unique ways…it’s all finally starting to click. I would not be as okay with my circumstances. I would likely keep on going down the same old paths. It takes courage to simply take responsibility for yourself and make the changes you need to make. Because ultimately, you cannot control how other people are going to show up in your life.

    This is essentially the Stoic wisdom of Epictetus. He talks about what you can and cannot control, and taking the time to examine your impressions of a person/situation before making a rational response. He also deals with the ‘bad’ emotions, like grief and sadness. Worth a look IMO

    For the first time I disagree with the Minimalists. I have never liked the mantra of "no one can make you upset but you". If no one can make you upset, all that means is you just don't care about anyone. Of course other people's actions give you every range of emotions. A wonderful gift from a friend makes you happy, do they have no right to give you the emotion of happiness? Of course they have that right, they are your friend, you have allowed them close enough to you to effect your emotions, for better or worse. I very much agreed with the guest speaker today, she had such a well-rounded view of emotions. Great stuff.

    Emotions that people have is natural and understandable. Also, emotions are what make us human and we do have the power to control our emotions.

    • @eleanor4759
      @eleanor4759 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We don't have conscious control over our emotions because they're a far older system in our bodies (if that makes sense). But we have control over a) what we expose ourselves to and b) how we process/express emotions. Ie. Reacting (exploding/imploding) vs. responding. Reacting is knee jerk and unconscious and responding is witnessing the emotion/sensation within our body before responding to the situation once the emotion has reduced in intensity.

      @@eleanor4759 To be honest, I think before I act with emotions because I cannot take words back or my actions out of emotions. So my thoughts and my feelings can match what I am about to express.
