What Life Was Like as a Samurai In Feudal Japan

  • Samurai dominated the country of Japan from the 12th to the 19th century. The fierce, disciplined warriors lived according to the bushido code, an unwritten set of rules and norms based in loyalty, sacrifice, bravery, and honor, remembered popularly as samurai code. Along with the code came samurai traditions and customs that defined their physical appearance, sexual relationships, how they killed and how they died. Just like pirates cherished their earrings and Vikings dyed their hair, samurai demonstrated their dedication to the code and to their lifestyle in some unique ways.

The Samurai was just another warrior class of nobility, much like other feudal societies. Their behavior, codes of conduct, and other such trappings were extremely similar to those in other cultures.
Many myths have been exaggerated regarding them, as with the others, too. Loyalty to their lord and oaths being a good example. Those began being exaggerated in the late 19th century, some time after the Meiji Restoration, as nationalist propaganda. If you read actual historical events during older times of conflict, Sengoku Jidai being a prime example, you'll see there were many instances of betrayal and self-serving decisions which counter such narratives.
Another related subject, that of suicide (hara kiri), is also regularly perceived as unique to the Samurai. While they ritualized it, the act was still often what they did to avoid possibly worse consequences of their failure, loss of status, capture, etc. Such acts have been done around the world throughout history, even into more modern eras.
This isn't intended to denigrate Samurai, or imply that they weren't impressive. Just that their behavior wasn't as different as other feudal warlords in history, or warrior leaders in general, as the modern mythology would have you believe.

Feudal Japan is one of the most enigmatic and fascinating periods of time and I can't even imagine how awesome it would be to be able to look back and see what went on and witness all the treachery, betrayal, honor and dishonor that took place, such a unique culture full of ritual and rules so strict that when broken those that committed the transgression had to kill themselves by disembowelment called seppuku done with a knife that they always kept with them and a ceremonial white cloth wrapped around the handle leaving only the razor sharp tip and blade exposed to cut their abdomen wide open with and bow in death

One common misconception is that Samurai always used Katana. No, that's wrong. Samurai barely used Katanas and mostly use spears and bows when on horse and land. Katana was more likely a secondary weapon when the Naginata broke.

    • @arcotroll8530
      @arcotroll8530 ปีที่แล้ว +1

In fact, katana was more of a status symbol when worn alongside the wakizashi (known together as the daisho "long-short"). It was also more of a dueling weapon than one of war. The same misconception stands for ancient Greek hoplites and earlier Mycenaean Greeks, who also used the short sword as a secondary weapon, favouring the spear first.

Also, as a person of Chinese decent, I don’t have too much of an issue when someone mistakes Chinese for Japanese music and vise versa since I can see how the mixup can happen. But even so, it’s still best to actually do research of how to distinguish one from the other if you’re doing videos based on specific cultural things like Japanese, Swedish, Egyptian etc. and not just something like East Asian culture, North African culture etc.

One omission in this video is around 5:30 when they discuss samurai weaponry. They mention that medieval samurai traveled on horseback and were fond of the bow and arrow, which is true, but they also made extensive use of a sword called the tachi, which is sort of a predecessor to the katana. The weapons are very similar, but unlike a katana, the tachi has a more pronounced curvature that runs all the way down the tang, resulting in a curved tsuka (handle). These swords were worn horizontally on the belt with the edge down, so that it could be drawn easily while on horseback. They were used somewhat like cavalry sabers in mounted combat. As fghting from horseback fell from favor in the 15th and 16th centuries, so too did the tachi, which was supplanted by the more practical and easy-to-wield katana that we are familiar with today.

My biological family's line is Samurai and Geshia, and I'm starting to find out more of my culture. I was adopted from Japan at 6 months old and I have a twin brother, I'm the oldest and found out that even if the oldest is a female they have very important roles in family businesses. And if the oldest can't do the task the youngest child can, which basically my twin brother have to do it or be shamed in the line. Very tough families in a Samurai and Geshia line, so I am learning both sides. My biological father said "Gor a female who is born first, must learn the elegant ways of a woman but also have to manly. In other words my daughter you have to be elegant, tough, brave, and cunning to get thru our way of life. We dont do very much killing now, but you must learn it so when it does come time to take the family business you know the honorable way to make it last." My father is a 8th-9th generation Samurai/Geshia line in the family, so there is a lot of history of my family in Japan. My mother is mixed, so when I heard before hand Samurai men could only marry Japanese females of higher rank or the same. I'm scratching my head of how my mom got the honor of his family without no problems.... well going to find out why and such soon, they are planning on a family gathering shortly still fighting on where to have it. At America where I'm adopted to or at my home town in Osaka, Japan.

And after the Taira clan was defeated and her husband killed, Tomoe didn't take her life so she lost her samurai title and honor. So Tomoe cannot be considered a samurai.

In history, women have been fighting. But they didn't have the samurai title.

The only theory I've really heard for her origin (assuming she existed) was Takei Yousetsu's suggestion that she was a daughter of Yoshinaka's foster father Nakahara no Kaneto'o. In that case her father almost certainly had a son, Yoshinaka's sworn brother Imai Kanehira.

spent 4 years in Japan. Many of the locals around the ages of 55+ have it in their minds that Samurai's didnt really exist because of how unreal the training was. Apparently, Samurai life was in such secrecy that no one spoke of it and therefore, today some believe it never happened.
However, during WW2 time frame, when Guam was a mere chess piece in the Pacific, its been documented that the Japanese that landed on Guam also had stowed Kitanas on them should they need to resort to a more traditional fighting style. After WW2 and the new "constitution" written for Japan by the US, Japan dropped a lot of its traditions and heritage and adopted a more modern way of life.
Very few Japanese join the military because its simply not needed if the US is providing security 24/7. However, if the Japanese do join their own military, they tend to promote rather quickly and have some of the youngest high ranking officers I've ever seen. Pilots, too. Very smart people, polite, and kind. Funny! They have a great sense of humor and their food is amazing.

Nice video but I just wanted to say a few things: The 8th Century saw the invasions of Vikings and the early formations of European kingdoms. It wasn't until the end of the 11th Century that there were Crusades in Europe and the Middle East. You brushed upon how many Samurai were financially challenged, but I felt like you could've talked about how the introduction of firearms via the Portugese and the opening up of the country in the 1800s eventually led to the hardships of Samurai coming to a front. This ultimately led to the abolition of the Samurai class.

Wrong. You actually pronounce the da-i as the western da and i sounds. There is no E sound in Daimyo. Japanese speaker here.

Actually by the Edo period, the merchant class was doing very well, unlike most samurai. Since they were lower on the social scale, sumptuary laws were passed to limit their display of wealth. However, they found clever ways of bypassing these and managed to still look trendy.

Good rule of thumb when looking to try to pronounce Japanese words without knowing Japanese is: -European Vowels (A-'ah', I-'ee', u-'oo', e-'eh', o-'oh') and mostly American/British English consonants (J is always 'jay' and never 'hay' or 'yay' and G is always hard and never 'juh'). Vowels are almost always pronounced in conjunction with the syllable that preceeds them, so a word that ends in 'ne' sounds like 'neh' (For example, Yoshitsune would be 'Yoh-shee-tsu-neh'; that's a difficult example though, because in that case, the u in 'tsu' is made by pushing air out of the mouth and is close to silent, and the someone who doesn't speak Japanese, sounds close to "Yoh-shee-tsneh'.)
With that in mind, the pronunciations for your words would be:
    -Daimyo: 'die-myoh'
-Sake (it's not saki, it's sake; within Japan, it's also often referred to as 'nihonshu'): 'Sah-keh'
    -Yoshitsune: 'Yoh-sheet-tsu-neh'
    -Minamoto: 'Mee-nah-mo-to'
Also it's not entire accurate to say they ruled the country from the 12th to 19th century; while after the 16th century the government was indeed a military dictatorship, any samurai outside of the government itself had little to no power; they were forced to spend their extremely limited budget making trips to the capital (a measure deliberately taken specifically to limit their power and chances of rebellion). Also, during this time, modern economics nearly destroyed the samurai financially; samurai were restricted from commerce (though some did partake), and their income consisted primarily of the fixed estate/rice granted to them by the shogun (the military dictator). Over time, as, with no battles to be fought (in the early 1600s, the shogun ended an extremely long conflict and took measures to make sure another conflict would not occur that could threaten his rule of the country), they had no way of making gains in land (and thus increase their livelihood), which also did not account for inflation. Merchants overtook them, despite being from a lower class, as they were allowed to trade freely, and by the time Japan engaged in large scale interaction with Europe beginning in the 1850s, the merchant class were easily the most well off group in Japan while the majority of samurai had been reduced to abject poverty.

The samurai code of honour did not really come about until the edo period and really was perfected in the 19th century. The Samurai did believe in loyalty. They were very proud and liked to fight someone of their high cast. They were really just as treacherous as any other military class.
