These guys at Kyoto Samurai Experience are awesome! My gf and I got to meet these guys. The swordmaster makes it look so easy. He's a former champion. And then once we got to try it, it was like swinging a heavy metal bat around lol. We sucked. It took me a couple swings to cut the bamboo mat. Gf couldn't cut through it at all. If you're going to Kyoto, schedule some time with them!!!

However, it’s still around 38 inches of steel for the blade and tang plus the tsuba and handle add some weight as well. So no it’s not comparatively heavy to a good chunk of European swords, but it’s not exactly light.

Those in edo period who fight each other just for their delusional honor and their urge to see actions were hardly called samurai. They were the predecessors of modern yakuza.
