This is great as a TH-cam model lesson. If you were the guy on my block playing bluegrass (or mandolin generally) I would be over at your house learning...if not I guess the internet will need to suffice. Lots of positive comments on the singing. I always think we should avoid negative self talk like " I am not very good" etc.You pull it all together very nicely.

I like how you did that, easy to follow and explained well. I found a 1950s playable Kay recently, cleaning it up, putting on new tuner knobs and restringing it. Really excited about learning this song. I started learning guitar 2 years ago, I have wanted a mandolin for a while. I am stoked!

Very cool concept for learning the chord changes. I've been playing the mandolin for a few months, and I've been wanting to start learning chords cause playing single notes sounds pretty thin. My only other experience with a stringed instrument would be the bass guitar and i never really needed chords on that thing lol

i'm loving these mandolessons....i inherited my grandfathers mandolin and am starting to learn how to play it through you. where are you from in maine? i live in switzerland but go to maine every summer as my parents retired there 40 years ago. even though they have passed away, i still have family there, living on an island. i teach at the bates dance festival every year (19 years now) and it's been great to be able to combine the two things...teaching dance and seeing mid-coast maine. thanks for what you do. as soon as i have some extra money in my account i'm planning on sending you some.

Hey Baron, I'm absolutely loving your lessons! My friend gave me his mandolin on a whim. It's my first instrument. So glad I stumbled across your channel!
I'm wondering: is the strum pattern you're using at 2:10-2:40 the same as what you taught in the Beginner Series? Bass-down-up, alternating on the G and D bass note? It sounds like there's something more going on in there. I tried slowing down the video to 0.5, but I couldn't figure it out.

Basic music theory would help anyone even on the simplest of songs. As a classical violist, your LH thumb seems to be highly active, rather than passive supportive. Is there a reason for that on mandolin?

I seriously appreciate your lessons but I am having a really hard time getting the actual strumming pattern and feel down. Do you have tips for what patterns should be used?
Hi! Don't know if this will help or not, but I will try :)..While the "up-down" or "down-up" or "down-mute-up" etc is certainly a valid part of learning strum patterns, the part that is not mentioned as much is the actual FEELING of the song. I call it vibe, and it refers to how the rhythm of the song actually feels internally. Kind of like when you learn to ride a bike...it starts out as pedal, balance, forward, slower/faster, steer, etc..and it just doesn't make sense! Then one day you FEEL how to ride a bike and it s cemented. I am no music teacher but here is how I have gotten strum patterns down: 1. Strum down only, making sure you are in time; 2. when you are ready, add in an up strum, making sure you are in time; 3. Try muting your strings with your strumming hand and only playing strum/hits in time with the beat of the song, almost like a back beat drum; 4. experiment, when you are ready, with a combo of ups, downs, mutes, any way you like; 5; it may sound silly, but don't forget to breathe and relax (don't think too much, but FEEL the song); 6. Enjoy! Enjoy! Enjoy! Hope this helps you!

I inherited a mandolin from my great-grandfather, but I'm not able to tune one of the e-strings because it seems to be stuck. Do you have any tips?
Take it to a luthier if you arent extrenely handy already. Its an heirloom. While chances are it isnt highly valuable in the marketplace, it's sentimental value is obviously immeasurable.
That said... Basically, remove and clean the tuner. Is it open or closed (can you see the gearing on the back of the tuner, or is there a cover on it)?
Usually mando tuners are in 2 'bank's, left and right, commonly called 4 in 1s. Meaning 4 tuners on each side are a solid assembly. Sometimes all 8 tuners are individual machines. Regardless, remove either the frozen tuner, or the 4 in 1 assembly on that side. BE CAREFUL NOT TO STRIP THOSE TINY SCREWS!!!
Once the tuner is off, if it is a closed tuner, remove the little cover over the stuck tuner. This should be another tiny screw. Again, don't strip it.
The post that the string physically connects to (here after called the post) is held in place by a slightly larger screw in the middle of the gear on the back side. Again, you guessed it, don't strip it. You might need penetrating oil at this point. Once the screw is out, the post should be removable, as well as the gear. Again, penetrating oil. If you have to use pliers to pull the post, and that isn't uncommon at all, wrap the jaws of your pliers in duct tape to keep from marring the post.
Withvthe post and gear out, you can easily see the tuning knob you turn to tune the string has a worm gear that meshes with the gear your removed. This work gear pops out of the tiny arms that hold it in place.
Clean the post, gear, and worm gear very well and polish them up. I use an old tshirt and orange oil. Once everything is clean, VERY lightly oil them, and then wipe off the excess oil. You can also color the insides of the teeth and lands of the gear and wormgear with #2 pencil instead, since graphite (pencil lead) is a lubricant. I prefer the pencil lead because you can also use the pencil lead and eraser to remove surface corrosion if any is present. ( this trick also works on surface rust on old guns.)
Reassembly is reverse of disassembly.
It should be working better than the other 7 tuners now.
