- Truck drivers face hazards on the job every day, hazards that don’t even involve driving.
Meet Joe: Dog-father, short-haul truck driver, cooking show enthusiast. Watch what happens when his life takes a bad turn after he injures his back while operating the landing gear on his trailer.
In this short-haul truck driver safety video, we see how one simple mistake could lead to serious injury - and why you always need to operate the landing gear on a commercial truck correctly.
Working in commercial trucking involves some actions or movements that can put you at risk of sprains, strains, or other injuries.
How do I operate landing gear safely?
One way you can reduce your risk of injury is by working from a balanced position and alternating positions to put less strain on your body when manually cranking the handle.
Examples of good positions include:
• Standing facing the handle with both hands gripping the handle
• Standing facing the trailer with one hand on the trailer to support your body and one hand on the handle
• Wrapping all your fingers around the handle in a tight grip - never spin with one finger
Consider the following additional tips to reduce the risk of injuring yourself when working with landing gear:
• Use the right gear
• Maintain your landing gear
• Use mechanical aids
• Release the fifth wheel safely
• Be aware of your environment
• Wear your personal protective equipment (PPE)
