My Japanese Apartment ♡ (Ehime JET)

- Hello again! For new viewers, I am an ALT (Assistant Language Teacher of English) on the JET Program. I was assigned to live in subsidized teachers' housing which was arranged for me when I got this job. The rent is 18,000 yen (about $145) per month. Basically all of the furniture was already here (supplied by my BoE & left by predecessors), but I've added my touch to the place~ I live in the inaka (countryside) of Japan ♡
This was a requested video & I really wanted to make it so I could preserve the memory of this place, since I will be moving to Tokyo in 4 months.. I'm so glad I can hear some of my students playing in the background ; u ;
*Review of some of the Japanese words I used in the video:
Genkan - entrance area where you remove your shoes
Aircon - individual, wall-mounted air conditioning/heating unit
Futon - traditional Japanese-style bed that is essentially a big flat pillow that you lay on the floor to sleep on
Kotatsu - heated table with blanket
Tatami - traditional Japanese flooring made of woven straw
*In case you're wondering why there is a really low mirror in the shower - Japanese people usually shower by sitting on a small stool in front of the mirror and then using the shower head to wash their body (you can take the it off of the holder on the wall).
*Japan doesn't have central heating, air conditioning or even insulation in many of its buildings! That's why kotatsu, hot baths & aircons are popular here.
*In the video, I said I didn't really need the aircon in the living room because I have a kotatsu to keep me warm. That's because, since winter is just now ending, I forgot all about how useful it is in summer when used for cool air - i definitely need it !!

This is a late comment, but I have always wanted to learn Japanese and your videos got me back in the spirit now that I have a goal in mind: I want to study Japanese for the next few years (I want to be fluent in it), and by the time I can speak nicely in it, I'll have my college degree where I can take a gap year to head over and teach! It must be sooooo cool to live and sat in Japan. How does it feel? It must be so surreal to live in a place you usually see on TV. I love the view of the playground but beyond that was a peaceful view of the mountains. Do you pay rent for living in the apartment? And are you a permanent teacher or temporary teacher living and teaching in Japan?
Kayla Headley it feels great ! i'm really lucky. i love those views too♡ yes i pay rent but it's very cheap because i live in teachers housing! i guess you would say i'm a temporary teacher? yea ^_^;

Lydia Smith aw thank you! it's like america, you can get an apartment furnished or unfurnished... but in the case of JETs/ALTs who are in and out of the same apartment, it's usually somewhat furnished from previous people.

jaron641 um it doesn't come with wifi but it does have cable, a microwave & toaster! that's coincidental though, everyone's situation is different.

Because I am researching Japanese houses to see what they look like cause, me and my friends are going to Japan for a week when I am 18, and im so excited so we have all been researching it. I've had a few friends do the JET program and it is really something I want to do. However there is one question I have for you - How did you manage to get an apartment so BIG!?!?!?
None of my friends/teachers/or any other people on youtube (that I have seen) have had anything other than a studio apartment while a part of the JET program. Is there a particular reason you have such a big apartment? Is it to do with where you are?
Charlie - Chan well, i didn't choose my apartment and i would say that in general, no JETs do. we are placed in the apartments of our predecessors, so it's left completely up to chance. the reason my apartment is big is because somehow, at some point, someone decided that this is where the ALT will live. i think it's more so about availability/location/convenience in my case as opposed to what the actual apartment is like inside. i live in inaka (countryside) teacher's housing that's meant for families. i've seen some JETs in even more rural areas live in 2-story houses!
