CRISPY COMBINE PART 1 HOW TO GET IT OUT OF THE FIELD?

- Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching!!! I hope my viewers are enjoying the new 4K videos!!! Today, I take our flagship Peterbilt 389-X, Miller Industries, Century 1150R heavy rotator towing and recovery unit #11, Ethan takes dad's Western Star with a Vulcan V70 Heavy towing and recovery unit and Gavon brings our traffic control truck along with extra lengths of wire rope (cable), tools, and other things we may need for today's long, tiring job. We have to take this one is stages. As I've heard it said, "I know I'm going to have to eat this elephant...one bite at a time". The ultimate goal is to get this burnt John Deere Combine out of the field and loaded onto an RGN trailer for transport. This video is part 1, getting the combine out of the field. How many more videos? I don't know yet. This was a 16 hour day with over 4 hours of video footage to edit. Next week will be towing the combine down the highway to a solid surfaced open area for loading. I might get the loading into next week's video, but I just don't know yet. Our biggest hurdle on this job was getting the combine out of the field before the rain moved in. The ground was already too soft to get our big trucks in. So, how do we get it out of the field? You are a very patient man and a good instructor. The way you take a minute to explain why things are done a certain way is cool.
My truck driving instructor was the same way she constantly showed me and explained why trailers are hooked and disconnected a certain way.
I'd agree with the patient part. . . . very patient, as for instructor, there's none better, as for learners. . . hmm.
Tell that to my cousin. Back when he worked for my dad, he had a trailer sitting on top of the fifth-wheel pin unsecured. He had a chance for it to fall off and hit someone. Thank God it didn’t or my dad would’ve been upset with my cousin.
Love Ron how you always maintain 3 points of contact when either climbing up or down, even into the cab you use the grab bar. Good habbits like that make folks live longer with fewer broken bones.

Even the farmer got in on helping as part of the team :D Sounds like from the farmer talking about how the drove it away from the crops... Kinda sounds like no one was injured, but yes I agree lets hope no one did :)
Ron I gotta say I've seen alot of guys do recoveries around Central Illinois and you're definitely the master at it always making it easier, the guys should be standing outta the way of the chains and cable incase something were to give. I had a buddy get it with a chain through the cab of a John Deere tractor. Stay Safe.🙏🇺🇸👍
A dead combine is a handful and as a farmer, fire is your worst nightmare. I have 3 Fire Extinguisher's placed on the machine I operate and carry a leaf blower to keep the chaff and dust off the machine.

On the front drive wheels on the shaft going to the bull gear housing. There is a bolt on a slip collar you take out. That could be easier than taking the hose lose most times. Seemed every year had at least 1 combine stuck are a cotton picker. It's good to see you teaching the younger men how to hook and pull from different parts. Keep up the good work and the videos

If there was a Tow Truck University (and me attending), I'd want Prof Ron Pratt teaching me. Wowsers, another incredible job and always good to watch Ethan's progress. Most likely caught fire last Fall harvesting and insurance red tape kept it there until now.

Mr Ron I like that saying "There is always a way" Thanks for sharing and stay safe.
Ron here's an idea build a multi piece (A) frame you can pin together quick to pick stuff up far away from the rotator. Like the combine head or a car stuck in a ravine, ditch, pit, brush or pond yards away.
They should also get a come along chain hoist. Had a 6 ton that was easy enough to lug with 2 people. It would have been useful to lift the header attachment.

Ron, you might want to add onboard air to your Dodge pickup, this would be useful for air tools, as well as inflating tires, such as in this situation. There are a number of types available, but I would recommend a belt driven pump, such as used on tire service trucks.
In this situation the tire was burned, it can't hold air.
The rotator has all the onboard air one could need. I imagine there was a reason they didn't try to air up the tire, or they did try off camera and found why it was flat.
@@legohead6 Ron doesn't need a heavy vehicle to provide air. The Dodge would be a better option as it can go more places the rotator can't, and with less surface area damage.
@@larrykriete7035not true. At 4:15, the video shows that the tire has gone flat. Having air in it would have made handling it easier. There's no burn marks on the tire, and the burn marks on the frame doesn't quite reach the tire.

Absolutely! The cell phone is a major distraction. Ron has the patience of a saint tolerating that. I don’t think Ethan would get away with that with any other boss than his dad.
Ethan is in the company too. maybe he was doing some business related tasks...

Ethan and Gavin GET YOUR NOSES OUT OF YOUR PHONES. They are NOT a respirator! Safety first, and if your eyes are not on the job at hand you can get hurt. Ron I love all your expertise and teaching but you should insist the boys cell phones stay in the pockets.
If Ron saw the phone usage as a problem, he would have said something. He evidently didn't see any issue in this particular situation. If they were on a more active roadway, such as the interstate, then I'm sure they are smart enough to not look at their phones, and if not, Ron definitely would have said something.

John Dear 9770 STS with single front wheels in good working condition was worth $75k-125k. That is a hit for the farmer. Probably had insurance but you can’t put a price on loss of use. The combine had set in the field for a few weeks, probably waiting for insurance adjuster to make a determination. Farmer had already worked the ground around the fire. Extremely soft ground, easy to get stuck. Good job.

Multi-phase job. Phases 1,2 & 3 done. Free-rolling, out of the field onto the access road, and onto the highway. Next, tow to the lift point, then lift and prepare for transportation. Whew!!!

Great job guys. Having been a farmer, it is always sad seeing a beautiful machine burned to a crisp. It came out of the field pretty easy, with no small part from you all.
These modern harvesters are amazing machines, doing in one day what it took weeks to do manually. Man has come a long way in mechanical progress. Makes you wonder what tomorrow will bring?

If you can’t take the time to answer his questions in the field, would you please make a note of the questions and do a teaching session at a later time so you can teach him the why and he can learn? You can even ask him how he would handle it as a pop quiz after the training session. ❤❤❤

There is a transmission on most combines that can be put in neutral, but most also have a spring applied, hydraulic release park brake.

Seems like with all the farmland around you get a lot of soft surface issues. Have you considered getting some of the steel duckboard panels the Army Engineers use to make temporary runways? I know they're not cheap (nothing good is) but they would certainly uncomplicate some of the off-road recovery jobs.
You mean Marston Matting? I tried to find some of that years ago and was unsuccessful

Back 18yr or so ago. I was driving north out of Lexington Tn. And coming south was a big towtruck. Hauling a combine backwards. it took up both lanes. They had the rear steer axle on the wheel lift.
Traffic was behind them for miles.
Monday afternoon as we were traveling on I-44 going east between Phillipsburg and Lebanon in Missouri we noticed many lights flashing. As we got closer over in the west bound lane close to the shoulder many responders there. The large wrecker had a hold of the semi tractor and the people were looking at the box trailer, the whole front end was ripped open and torn apart from the trailer. The material looked like thick foam boards or something similar. Didn't look like anything caught fire, which was a good thing. Not sure if his fifth wheel came undone or what. I couldn't see the name on the side of the semi. As we came back there were more people there, trying to figure out what their next step would be. They would probably have to unload most of it. The break in the trailer went just past the dolly's. It looked as though someone used a can opener to open the box trailer. I never heard anything on the news about it. A few weeks before that, just before Philipsburg another truck had run off the road and went through a state highway sign tearing it apart. Nothing on the news about it either.
Pulling that combine out of the field is about as exciting job I had during a college summer job. Watching paint dry on these really large highway signs for our NC roads. All that is done now by prisoners. Back in the 70s those signs were made by companies. I worked for Modern Metal Products. I don't think the company exist anymore. It probably a division of something else now.
I have seen on another channel where they used old lunch trays to slide cars on without wheels or suspension. Maybe a suggestion for future to create sliding plates with a 90 degree bend so they do not slide out, to drag things onto. Minimal damage to the ground or roadway...

Best hour and 3 min of the day so far. I pity the poor farmer that has a piece of equipment like that burn down. Kinda surprised the landowner didn't shovel up the debris rather than just till it into the ground.

Rotator in the tutorial fields . Looks like a bad episode of green mud acres. Was it corn and made popcorn 🍿 looks like it sat all alone in the field to rust up. Time to plant another crop

I almost wonder why you didn't hook up the underlift while it was on the access road and haul it out that way. I know the winch was working but I bet that would have worked a lot faster I suspect. Yeah, that looks like it was a real fun job.
Ron, Enjoy your videos. It always scares me see one of yall standing so close to cable. I had a rope snap and come back it cab with me in a skid steer. I don't get hurt hardly at all but scared me. Just want yall to stay safe.

Looks like that field was tilled with a moldboard plow after harvest,. that's why the ground is extra soft. I can't imagine why that farmer would've done that knowing that the combine needed to come out.
I hope that they are able to get that John Deere "Cadillac" repaired and ready for harvest for this fall. A machine like this would cost 6 figures, and it represents a major investment in their agriculture.
