Burley Travoy folding trailer with a Brompton folding bike

  • Most of the packages we send out go via Royal Mail
Larger ones go via carrier - and we drop these off at a drop-off point each morning
We try and take them by Brompton - though this can be a struggle when there are lots (especially after a public holiday weekend)
The T bag and rack are good for carrying - but we're running out of capacity, so decided to give the Burley Travoy trailer a go - and share the details
Like the Brompton, it folds down to a nice small size for storage

I've had a travoy for a couple of years and alongside a Brompton it's been such a great tool for doing all the communal shopping during lockdown. The updated travoy has some needed improvements on the original, namely the wheel guards and kickstand.

A few people have questioned the stress on the seatpost - have you had any issues?
      Do you tow much weight?

@@brilliantbikes Hi. No issues at all and I've regularly overloaded the travoy. If you keep the weight as low as possible, even with 20kg loaded, you can push and pull the travoy with one finger while it is unhitched. So once it's hitched up the weight doesn't really lean on the hitch rather the weight is balanced over the axle of the trailer. The Brompton then just gives it a wee pull along.

    Great video.
At first glance it looks a lot like an upmarket golf trolley.
Given that many owners might also have such a trolley languishing in their shed or garage, I'm a tad surprised that no-one has thought about developing a universal clamp+coupling to enable them to be utilised like this.

The Circe Atlas collapsible trailer is the natural companion cargo trailer to the Brompton as it collapses beautifully to tiny dimensions within it's own bag and doesn't affect the folding mechanism.
There are Circe Atlas trailers being used to deliver boxes of bicycles in the UK and there are reviews and videos online.
I bought mine immediately after watching the TH-cam video of it being assembled, I just fell in love with the way it assembled and collapsed away when required, rather like the Brompton!
I paid £150 and am very impressed with the design, components, manufacture and quality, you really do have to remember that it's behind you.
I like the idea of towing rather than weighing down the bicycle with everything strapped on and the versatility simply cannot be beaten.

BRILLIANT, of course! Looks like a very handy bit of kit, packs down very neatly and really useful for errands and whatnot around town, but not convinced I’d want to take it touring... Have you tried the Cyclone Chubby = slightly bulkier, but more stable, and encloses content securely, plus doubles as a backpack for flying with the Brompton inside... about double the price though, and probably overkill for local runs, but a definite contender! Strapping skills and spatial awareness improve with practice (😉) but it wasn’t the krypton factor so worries there😂, excellent buff-wrangling skills 😷! You all stay safe too, and thanks for another useful and informative watch!

    Now here's a funny thing.
Given all of the comments bandied around regarding the potential loading on the seat post and whether it breaches Brompton's recommendations.
On the Brompton youtube channel there is a video showing a guy in the USA commuting to work by Brompton plus folding boat which he tows behind his bike.
Will Butler-Adams, Brompton's CEO, during a subsequent visit to the States, did another video sharing the journey with the guy and his passion.
Do have a look at both videos and make up your own minds . . . . . .

I have long admired this trailer but wondered about the "see-saw" effect it might have on the frame. I guess it will be fine as long as you don't over load it. I did call Brompton myself last year and they advised that the Brompton was not designed to pull trailers, but I have definitely seen somewhere on either their website or in their paperwork that the Brompton can pull an axle-attached trailer. Still really like this Burley Travoy though :)

Nice looking trailer/trolley. I'm a bit confused by the capacity though. In the video you say you mustn't exceed 40kg on the bottom of the trailer and 20kg on the top section. But I just went to the Burley website to look at the produce and it says in the specification that the capacity is 27kg.
As I'd use this for both normal grocery shopping and also carting materials to/from my allotment, including sacks of compost, spuds, etc, the 27kg is marginal on what I might need, but 60kg would be fine. Is that pounds->kilos conversion issue here, as 27kg is 60lbs?

Hello. Well it was the 1st time i tried. It was a heavy load. I made sure I didn't exceed the maximum weight of the burley, but I didn't think for one second I would have a problem with the brompton. I had the c bag on the front with about 3kg in it. I set off on the canal tow paths and about an hour into the journey i felt and heard clicking and realised it was the bearings on the brompton. I'm 6 ft and weight around 14stone. I wish the guy who sold me the brompton would have said hey be careful putting too much weight on the bearings. When I took it to cycle republic they got in touch with brompton and brompton warned that If you use a trailer you can void the warranty. So cycle republic just bluntly said I have voided the warranty and wiped their hands clean of me. I was gutted of course.

BIG RE-DESIGN compared with older model. Hitch, frame, colors , wheel guard , foot, all of which were problematic. Handles much differently on my 16-20"bikes. I had very poor stability with my Dahon, but stable on my Full sized bikes with the original. Only thing I could tell that changed was relation of pivot to rear axle, but flipped very easily regardless of loading. ?Any trouble with flipping with Brompton? It is noted Brompton specificly warns against trailers. Video of my trailer shows lots of frame flex. The factory straps are pretty thin. Standard Drings fit with a touch of the Dremel for DIY straps. Needed for carrying the Brommie, which was too wide to clear the trailer wheels if resting on the shelf.

It’s almost like it’s not there, I don’t find any twisting - I have to remember I am a long vehicle and give the corners some more space!

Before I got my brompton, I used a trailer from anderson. They are very good too. But they dont go on a brompton, so I had to change. The axe width is very similar on both trailers. But what really is better on the travoy are the wheels, that are a lot bigger. This does a lot for the stable use.

  • @alannewman85
    @alannewman85 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Are you sre about those loadings?? You say 40kg on the base and 20kg on the top. I have the pre 20 version and its 20 on the base and 10 on the top. 60kg or 30kg its a brilliant if hugely expensive trailer.

I just purchased a 2020 Brompton electric here in the US. I was real excited about this trailer until I read in my bike manual, pg 7, that I would void my Brompton warranty using a trailer. Is that the same for a non electric?

    • @whazzat8015
      @whazzat8015 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@ZzulfadliNasir You just need to have it clear the wheels , as it is wider than the frame and will rub. A box below it helps, but it can be strapped tight enough not to shift.
On a big wheel bike balance has not been a problem and the weight is close to the frame. On a bike where the trailer is tippy (my20" bikes) , I wouldn't put anything of value. I found the Travoy VERY tippy on the Dahon.

Like a handtruck it's good for large boxes but not that practical for groceries which is what people would use this for 95% of the time. If the Travoy somehow marries a folding shopping cart and has a baby then Burley would REALLY have a winner on it's hands. Are you listening Burley?

ATTENTION PLEASE!!! You made a mistake regarding the load a Travoy can carry. just bought a BURLEY TRAVOY 2020, from a dealer in Germany, and I unpacked it this morning, I just read the instructions. In the video you state that that its maximum weight is 40 kg on the Bottom sektion, and 20 kg on the top sektion. But i´ll bet you ment 40 lbs and 20 lbs (18 kg and 9 kg) A total load of 27 kg (or 60 lbs or pounds) . Am I right ? ;-) Dan in Denmark.
