This is so freaking awesome. Thanks so much Lee, I’ve been watching your channel for well over a year just happening coming into my feed and for whatever reason Sunset Sound has been dribbling in. Thanks so much for taking the time to make this great video, and being able to finally Have a visual along with all the other footage that has been made available up until now. The owner and his dad made a point of not taking a lot of photographs during all those years of recording and now you’ve given us to insight to some of the visual things talked about, for example, the infamous basketball court were prince, spent so much time in between sessions, and just a general sense for the orderliness and professionalism of the studio studios along with the camaraderie it isn’t by accident that sunset sound is still an existence today because of the positivity that exist there. No wonder so many great artists chose to work at Sunset Sound over the years.
*Leland Sklar* *THANK YOU* *I Thought i mentioned you? Because you all are a big bunch of GODS that paved the way for music in the day*So Its intense To hav more than one of you on my screen* *HOW MUCH GREATNESS CAN IT HOLD*Lol. *CATER*
So here we go again! Another reason why Lee's channel is the BEST! Not only do we get to hear many diverse artists that Lee has had the privilege of working with, we get to see behind the scenes of some of the place where this wonderful music was created and meet some of the people involved. I NEVER get to see this stuff and THANK YOU LEE for this experience!!!!
I love how Lee balances kidding around while at the same time being absolutely kind and respectful to his peers. This guy really has it figured out on that. Has to be one of the nicest people in the industry!
You got that right! Nothing like being in a studio with a bunch of people, and there's that one premadonna, or jerk who ruins it for everyone. Music is all bout emotion and you want to be in a fitting emotional state , and since I'm sure Lee isn't tracking some Nazi Hard core shit, he's right to help set a more suitable atmosphere. Working with him must be great. I'd give him the middle finger as often as he wants! (
He certainly knows how to show us around while not lingering where people are working, as I'm sure he doesn't want people lurking while he's laying down a track. Cruise in, state why you're there and get out. If only every radio station manager I've ever worked for had learned that lesson.
I love it when Lee lifts the velvet rope and lets us follow him into the tessitura of his world. Where the walls have become richly burnished with coloratura of legendary collaborations of rhythm, melody and roundelay.
One thing I've noticed about these vlog style videos is Leland lights up any room he walks in. People smile when they see him and that speaks to how good of a man he truly is.
Lee, I just loved this tour of the Sunset Sound Studio. It was fun to see what it looks like behind the scenes when making music. Thanks for taking the time to give us the tour. You are awesome!!
Very cool video! I was watching and thinking about all the cool people and albums that have been recorded here. Just imagine, all those records over the past decades. I cant get my head round it.
That is so strange! I just saw Rodrigo at the Jeff Porcaro tribute last night at the Spud and when you got into the recording room - there’s Daniel Lima who sang on Africa & Hold the Line! Small world. (Even having just flown in from Brazil the day before!) Have a great session!
OMG if those walls could talk ! thanks for the tour of one of your iconic offices Lee. So much history right there . Looks like the structure itself is stuck in the 70s with up to date electronics of course. Very cool 👍
I love seeing a million dollars worth of gear and then the taped up tissue on the NS10s. Always cracks me up.

I've passed thousands of times by Sunset Sound and never been inside. I've been to many other famous studios here in Hollywood but this one not yet. One day. Thanks Leland for the tour!
Excellent Leland! Hey, just picked up a Dingwall NG 2....It's on it's way from Denmark as we speak. Thanks for introducing me to them and Thank you for the interesting Video!
Thanks Cleveland that was very cool I recognized several those mixers. Especially the one that used for one of the scenes in entourage I think was filmed in front of that mixer
Thanks for this. Quick but efficient. Great to see well designed, well laid out (notice all the lounges are completely private and completely separated from the control & live rooms), real deal old school studios with nice ambient live rooms and legit classic vintage and modern gear....where the job can truly be done right.
Thanks Lee for taking us back through memory lane. It was 1975 or so when I met you, Joe and Dean Parks. I was just 18 or 19, a tech at Hollywood Sound Recorders. Some nights I’d have to run 16 or 24 track 2” tapes from studio to studio for all you great guys to overdub your parts on. Looking back to it all, I feel so honored to be able to have witnessed the business with all the great musicians such as yourself, the Neve & SSL consoles, the Ampex, Stephens and 3M multi tracks, the razor blades and splicing tape, the pin ball and pool tables, Martoni’s, Houston’s BBQ, and yes, that smell of Mylar in the morning! ‘Those were the days my friend. I thought they’d never end’. Thanks for sharing this Lee.
My Uncle worked at the great A&M RECORDS HOLLYWOOD from 1969-1999,and my life/stories are there. This is a treat and just a fantastic walk-a-long @SunsetSound with the Top Bassist Eva, the brilliant Lee Sklar! Thank you ,Sir.
It is so wonderful to be inside where the magic actually is going to take place. Thanks Lee to share with us a part of you day to day life. Greetings from Mexico City.
Man, that was fun. Made me pine for my days in Radio where wall decorations were more likely cables and mic stands than any kind of art. I don't miss the 18 hour days and minimal pay but I miss everything else. Do as many of these kinds of tours as you can. We all love seeing the places the music is made.
great to see Dean Parks doing well. first heard him via Koinonia. a gospel jazz band in the early 1980s. dear lee i hope the message of the 2nd chapter of acts, whom you admire so much, and did music with, provides you some real peace in these difficult days. godspeed
Thank you so much. What a privilege to see such an amazing workplace. How would it be just to be a visitor for a day? Wow. I kinda wish I did a walkthrough vid of my workplace of many years. If you like where you work, like I did, and you like your coworkers I recommend it. I've retired now so too late for me.
Makes me so happy that Sunset is still there! :-) ............luckily it's not far from Capital ;:-) Looking into studio 3 reminds me of the time I tried rolling a large case past the console and into the tracking room, and kind of sort of bumped the API. It left a wee little mark......I've never actually told anyone before, until now......over 30yrs later!. Parks and Cox!, always like seeing the faces I saw almost every week back in my cartage days(late 80s-early 90s).........good times! ;:-)
Thanks so much for sharing Sunset studio with all of us, I've always wanted to know what it was like inside there, such a happy group of friends and players to be creating and hanging with! Love all the gold records on the wall. Thanks again.
Love this Lee, I was just there recording in studio 3 back in January! It was so cool to be around all of the history in that room. I also got to talk with a couple guys from Jackson Brownes band (David and Val), they were really nice and recording with Rufus Wainwright. Hope to go back one day. Love your playing and vids, you’ve played on so many songs I grew up with and are definitely a big inspiration 💛 thanks!
Dude, thank you for taking the time to do this. This is where Van Halen cut their records. Zeppelin too and the Stones worked out of there! Legendary property it is!
Yeah man....VH is the first name I think of with this studio. Wonder if the legendary echo chamber is still operating. And it was funny Lee mentioned a Variac kicking around....wonder if Eddie ever used it.
@@orion681 help me out: what’s variac? I heard that Zeppelin recorded Rock and Roll there in early ‘71...back when Robert could reach the hot white flash vocal notes! Also, Gimme Shelter was done there with Merry on vocals. They called her at 2am and yet while pregnant, she came down and just nailed her part! “Raaaape Murderrrr it’s just a shot away...just a SHOT away!” That’s a song I’ll never ever get tired of man.... just killer!
It’s so cool to see Leland walk effortlessly through Sunset. First time I recorded there was with Mickey Petralia and Mario Caldato, Jr., doing overdubs on a record by The Crownsayers. We were all from DC, and we kept whispering to each other, “We’re at Sunset Sound!” It looks exactly as I remember it.
Loved this "All Access" tour of Sunset!! For those that may not know, If you grew up on 70's soft rock you grew up on Leland Sklar. This guy and his Mellow Mafia coconspirators literally wrote the soundtrack of your life. Music that both you and your parents would sit in the car listening to without either one of you touching the dial.
Love the tour Leland. Great to see Dean and Mr Cox. I was fortunate to tag along with Tim May to some sessions there……back in the olden days. Not sure if you would have to get sign offs from folks, but sure would be fun to see a bit of rehearsal or recording as it happens. Thanks, Clay

Putting the Baby Ruth in the bathroom…! LOL!
Looks like Dean Parks dodged a prank…temporarily…. ;-)
I spent my whole professional life in the recording studio (lots of them) but I'm retired now at 70. What a treat Lee. Thanks!!
Music is a gift from above. Leland Sklar is music.
I just have a blast when you take us on these tours. Love when I see my friends Dean Parks & Jim Cox. Please tell them howdy. Thanks Lee

Fabulous! And what a groovy drummer!! Thank you so much Leland.
So glad we got to see Walter White behind the mixing desk at 5:50, great stuff.
I used to own a few 8068 consoles. And just looking at em makes me happy.
This is so cool! It gives us an add’l touch point to see what, how, and where the magic happens. Lee, again, you are the man!!
That was very cool of you to show these studios. Thank you.
