- Can We Grow Sweet Potatoes in a GreenStalk? Zone 5 Gardening
This is our second season attempting to grow sweet potatoes in our GreenStalk vertical garden, and this season, our hope was to not only grow more sweet potatoes than last year but to grow larger sweet potatoes and a wider variety of sweet potatoes.
So we planted a different variety of sweet potatoes in each of the five tiers in one of our original GreenStalk planters, and in this sweet potato harvest video, we show you the results.
In this video, you will see: Centennial sweet potatoes, Bunch Porto Rico sweet potatoes, Vardaman sweet potatoes, White Triumph sweet potatoes, and Beauregard sweet potatoes, all from slips we purchased at tatorman.com.
We hope that this video about growing sweet potatoes vertically and growing sweet potatoes in a small space is helpful to you in deciding whether or not to grow sweet potatoes.
Thank you for enjoying this 2023 sweet potato harvest video!

After my epic fail trying to grow sweet potatoes last year, I decided not to even bother with them this year. The parsnips are so sweet and they grow well for us consistently here in Michigan zone 6A, so I will grow those instead indefinitely. I have plenty of parsnip seed packets now, and I also saved a lot of seed s this year from the several parsnips I overwintered.
We haven’t tried parsnips for a few years but that sounds fantastic! How well do they store for you?
@@GutenGardening I've only tried to store parsnips longer than a few weeks, 2022 was the 1st time growing them in a single 30gal grow bag to see how they'd do. They did well & I saved seeds from the few I overwintered. I now also have several other varieties of parsnip seeds, so I plan to grow a lot more in 2024, but I will probably be making pie filling with them. I plan to freeze &/or can them. I doubt they are good for long-term storage like sweet potatoes, & winter squash are, but I will look into that to be certain.
Fascinating. I planted a small patch of white ones with purple skin. Next year i will do a couple of vertical planters
Keep experimenting! I harness that variety called?
@GutenGardening I have no clue what the variety is. I live in the Netherlands and I think the original sweet potatoes I bought came from Morocco. Its their second season
It's a vining variety
Next season I will buy sets from garden center
Hmmm , it might be . Regardless of the size but then you can make sweet potatoes fries out the small ones . So it's a plus !
I personally haven't tried to grow them hard enough for the last two years , it's on my list for the year coming because I eat lot's of sweet potatoes! 😅
Sweet potato fries are at the top of my list for some of these :). The more you grow, the more you’ll eat. 😀
Well done loyal and faithful servant that harvested vertical tier sweet potatoes. Happy Fall Day. I am harvest ing in November also still have your seed share Thank you again
Excellent! And thank you so much. I hope your harvest is magnificent!
Not too bad for a vertical harvest! I still think the dry season prevented us from having the harvest that we could’ve had… At least, in my case!
I grow sweet potatoes but I think my first year was my best harvest. But I'm still trying to figure out what method works best for me.
I really think the nutrient content and watering have to be just right, so we continue to learn.
Ive.found having 5 greenstalks, the lower the tier, the less water they seem to get. Could it be as the tiers are lower, the holes.clog easier? Thats what I found. The tiny holes in the light blue trays dont seem to be sufficient. Maybe if you can afford to use promix you have better luck.
Also, how do you really clean and use those rootlike fruits? Just scrub them? If you try to peel you have nothing left.
I am wondering about enlarging those holes in the bottom tier to see if that helps at all. And, since we don’t use any pesticides, we just do a good scrubbing. Definitely can’t afford to lose any for those smaller ones.
How do you know when to harvest the sweet potatoes? Must they die back like regular potatoes or no?
Great question! They do sometimes die back depending on your growing zone, but for us, it is based on days from planting as that has been the best indicator in our experience. Each variety has its own recommendation, but most are around 100-115 days.
Did you determine why the 2 dry tiers were dry? Were the watering trays were clogged?
They didn’t look clogged to me, but I have noticed the bottom tier has been dryer for us in the past, and I have wondered if I should enlarge the holes a bit in the bottom tray to improve this issue.
