In his score Rautavaara wrote the scream for an instrument called lion's roar. However, conductor Leif Segerstam wanted to do the screaming himself and apparently it was ok for the composer.
I encountered the last six minutes of this yesterday on the radio, and was transfixed, sitting in my car awaiting the announcement of who this was before entering the supermarket. I thought it was an Alan Hovannes piece I’d never heard before. This guy was a true genius, and deserves to be recognized for the amazing multi faceted and complex approach he employed. This work demonstrates just how far modern popular music has descended from sheer brilliance to male bovine excrement.
I really recommend listening to this with headphones in the middle of the night
Also, the section which begins at 9:33 is one of the best things ever
I’m doing that right now
Rautavaara tricks us all into singing 12 tone melodies ! The violin concerto and organ concerti too are fabulous !
Wtf why is this so wonderful
Rautavaara was an incredible composer…and underrated yet… but he is a revelation…
Wow! First time I've heard this piece. Wonderful! ... First and second times, now. 👍
This is so intense, thanks for the score video.
fuckin mindblowing. love that i can hear bits of his 5th symphony and auringon talo/autumn gardens in this too. what a genius unspeakably based
this holds an atmosphere that cannot be matched with any other music (except maybe composers like him)
this is great!
Indeed
Wow this is Amazing. Thank you Guillom for your hard work to give us Rautavaara videos.
Epic quotation to his 3rd symphony at 17:20
Sharp ear you have
@@febiloginot really, I just listen to a lot of Rautavaara
He also quotes his 2nd Symphony around 11:30!
Edit: I meant starting around then. It comes back a few times.
@@TamberCave It's from 7 preludes, and he quoted it in 2nd symphony later.
Many main melodies of 2nd are from those preludes
