The first piano rendition I heard in my life was played by a little girl of 9 years. I was 13 years. It happened in Lyceum of Beja, Portugal, in 1954. Imagine who played it? MARIA JOÃO PIRES! The greatness of her genius of the art of piano makes me so proud of my remembrance of that day. Though she keeps young as the artists do. And me too in my constant and huge admiration to her.
Wow! What a treasure! Wish I could hear a recording of that. There's something about the last movement which speaks on behalf of adolescence and she still captures it beautifully, might I say better than anyone else so far.
Bravo !
I am so loving those glasses laying on the key block! (I wonder if they are hers?) There is a marvelous interview of her on youtube where she says performances should be in a festival atmosphere - not the rigid, recital form. She really captured my heart when she said "...a child should never be allowed feel the aloneness of the stage..." - I can vouch for that 1st hand. A truly gentle soul.
There is something about Maria Joao Pires that is irresistible. If I had to explain I'd say that it's the combination of her appearance (with the pixey hairstyle, of course) and her uniques sort of playing. I liked every piece she'd played. I don't think that it's the fact that she's Portuguese or that she now lives on a farm away from the madding crowd, but it doesn't hurt. Thanks for a superb performance of "The Tempest," Ms. Pires.
Her performance of the third movement is perfect, some play it to slow some to fast but this is perfection! Every note she plays is so clear, she is just on another level of playing!
she's expressing sooo much with this sonata. she brought to the surface passages i had never ever noticed before...with such delicacy of touch! it is profound and mysterious, elegiac, poetic, nostalgic, tumultuous. absolutely top notch beautiful interpretation!
Yep, that's MJP! Great adjectives. Add magical and mystical. What she does with that the beginning of that first Schubert Impromptu is is miraculous. There is more to be mined in music's tender moments.
i absolutely love her fearlessness in changing emotions, that's what's so great about having beethoven in your life....comments welcome or/(am i not right?)
Genau so. Man fühlt sich so aufgehoben und zuhause. Tausend Dank.❤
Such a wonderful pianist. Exquisite tone, such care with dynamics and clarity of tone and voicing of chords, never execrated tempo and such interpretative freedom. Never any hint of showing off, It's all about the music.
execrated-hmm as players (not even performers) we are under strict orders to be prepared inwardly for all the changes before (pretty much) while practicing, making them audible-B has a lot of moral integrity, no?
Fantastic performance. The Opus number is 31 Nº2. This sonata was published under the same opus that sonata Nº16 and Nº18 that has the N1 and N3 respectively. Opus 32 is the Lied 'An die Hoffnung'.
I agree with you... I heard this interpretation in 1976 (she also recorded it in these years... I've been looking to find this records for years (not even mentionned in her discography)... and I am glad to hear her on youtube
2nd mov. Is just...out of this world. The tenderness and stark contrasts when required is noticed. I've listened to countless recordings of it since I was young. This has to be one of my favourites for so many reasons...thank you for another perspective...fell in love once again.
Curvo-me respeitosamente, perante tamanho virtuososmo. Subscrevo-me respeitosamente Paulo Costa.
great thank you, I am sight reading through all the sonatas and this one is coming up-it's going slowly due to ensuring all the fingering is accurate..
Maria The Great! ... it looks like she is composing this sonata right now that she is playing it!
bravo maria joao.... keep playing, please.... always.. “To be great, be whole; Exclude nothing, exaggerate nothing that is not you. Be whole in everything. Listening to this wonderful performance I came across your quote. I found it so impressive that I have copied it out. I know nothing of the author but he reflects a wisdom that is the essence of deep creativity. Many thanks for sharing this.
Beautiful performance. Thank you for posting. I’ve always been fascinated by this sonata. There is so much incredible pathos in this sonata. In the recitative, it’s the closest sound to pure suffering. Yet this sonata ends almost on a whisper.

Very nice Jose! ❤
very cool!(destiny?)
To me, her playing of Beethoven is one of the best there is !
Largo-Allegro
Adagio
Allegretto
When Pires plays a piece, it has got too be emotional and exceptional! I have no words!

don't know much french, but pathos, yes, merci
I am shocked. Best understanding of Beethoven. Genious interpretation! Thank You Maria! ❤

Yes! This is my FAVOURITE interpretation of this movement. So incredibly expressive. Love it!!!!
Amazing.....her use of the sostenuto pedal for resonance in certain passages, is a fine touch....... the whole presentation is wonderful.

she is amazing, love her
her coloration of the harmonic modulations in 3rd movt is the most sensitive and inspiring!!!

Wonderful!!!
Great pianist, great performance
Tremendous ability to communicate with Beethoven. Amazing Maria!!
Miracle she could keep her concentration with all the coughing and noise at 10:30.
This is very good playing. A few missed notes but even the very best do that. Just the right tempo too.
the best Beethoven and Schubert I have ever heard....
Her rendition always gives me chills! Heavenly!

Beautiful Maria! 💞 💞
