- Here is an onboard video from the 2012 KIC at Road America. The car is a 1997 Jordan with with a Judd engine instead of the Peugeot that it used in the actual Grand Prix. This was our first weekend with with the car and were astounded with the performance. There were a few bugs as expected but we got everything worked out. In front of me is my dad running a Benetton F1 from the same year, with the same engine. Keep in mind this is not a professional event, nor am I a professional driver. The only goal was to have fun and keep the car in once piece. Enjoy!

Fantastic driving! Especially for an amateur, and I mean that with no disrespect. Very smooth. One question, did you have to lift at the kink or did you do that because you were taking it easy? I'd expect a car from that era to have plenty of downforce to take it flat out.

I've spent my whole life going to Road America and watching this F1 car tear it up makes me cry with happiness.
We got down to the low 1:52's before catching up to traffic. There is another even there in September and I'll try open it up a bit.

Saw you in '14, I think, at RA Driving this during vintage weekend. Incredible! Nice Driving
I clocked one lap at 1:53.47 seconds... Pretty sporty. Compare that to Jim Pace's fastest lap of 2:06.23 driving Oscar Koveleski's M6B McLaren, with 725 hp on tap. Despite that McLaren's enormous acceleration, the F1 car brakes vastly better and blasts through corners at much, much higher speeds. Your Jordan-Judd would lap it every 8.5 circuits. As I said, pretty sporty for a 1997 chassis. That 1:53.47 is two seconds faster than the Daytona Prototypes qualified in 2014. That and I'm sure you had lots more in the car, but no need to push harder. Was great fun to watch....
1.39 is the lap record from 1999 indy Cart series, with a young Franchini.. Those cars were beast. 1200 HP Turbos. The technology was not what it is today, but the speeds were faster. I think every track record comes from the 1990's. Mansell broke a few with Newman Haus.
I got that wrong it was a 138.490 in 1998. I don;t think it will be beaten for a long time.
Why would you compare an M6B McLaren, totally different eras, technology, and aerodynamics. The McLaren is a slippery beast traction wise, needing very dynamic throttle control to handle oversteer and sliding through corners, the F-1 holds the road entirely differently. The power comparisons mean nothing when you’re fighting the McLaren every inch of the way.
@@vinrusso821 1:39.866 / 145.924mph (234.791 kph) set by Dario Franchitti, 2000 Team Kool Green Honda Reynard, CART Championship Race. This record still stands as of 2022, and the current IndyCars run at about 1:45:00. The only race car that could beat this time is a F1 car, which is not likely to race at RA.
@@joelsheebs728herta got the pole at 1:40.1945 in 2023. Despite having way less power and less downforce, the current cars are nearly just as quick as the CART cars, which is remarkable. If they had more downforce like 7 years ago, they would already be faster. Indycars are going hybrid next year, then the 2.4l power plants with 200 extra Hp are still on the table. Not really needed but those cars will crush every record and he close to F1 speeds on lower downforce tracks.

The acceleration from the rolling start...when compared to what the Nationwides will do tomorrow is absolutely unbelievable

For an Amatuar racer i guess. He's obviously driven competitive racing before. But the Indy CHAMP cars from the 90's were beast. Over 1000 HP. Road America record was set in 1998 with a 1.38 second lap. 4 seconds than todays fastest laps. And this guy running in the 1.50's is better than one thinks, considering he doesnt want to crash it. And it wasn't set up for race conditions. But it would have been hard pressed to beat 1.38.

hmmm I'd love to know how did you fit a fully working newer generation steering wheel in an 1997 car. I say that because Corse Clienti old Ferrari F1 cars (let's say from 92 or 93) have serious problems when customers try to put newer racing wheels to interface with the car electronics

I would love to get my hands on one of those Lolas used from 2003-2006. Such beautiful and fast machines. Champ Car drivers who had experience in F1 said the cars were only a couple seconds slower per lap than an F1 front runner, and it was pretty good for 1/10th the budget. F1 cars cornered faster, but Champ Cars could catch up fast on the straights under acceleration it seemed in the Laguna Seca comparison. Your thoughts?

Why did you let off before the kink? Just curious, I watch Patrick Long go around that section flat out in a GT3 car. Seems like the open wheeled F1 car would make enough downforce to take that flatout.
The GT3 car isn't doing as high speeds as this car at the kink. Most high powered cars lift a tad going into it. Compare specs though.. a heavier high downforce car making 500-600hp vs a lighter car making high downforce for its time, pushing 800hp. Not to mention, this is not a pro driver, hes really here to have fun and survive

They shouldn't have bothered making the track in texas for F1, they should have just done it here (with facility improvements and all)

Hey Im also an engineering student (Mechanical) Interested in racing. I know the steep hill it is, especially with me being older 21. Im planning on going to some racing school, and getting involved in club racing once i get my license. Any advice?
Awesome man! I had a pretty excellent experience at Skip Barber, so that would be my recommendation. From there you would have to choose a class. Spec Miata without question offers the best competitive racing for the price. You'd be caught up in intense battles, regardless of being up front, mid pack, or in the back. If you were looking to design/engineer your own car, the sports racer classes offer a wide range of options for that. It's considerably more expensive to be competitive, but if you're looking to drive a fast car it's the way to go. I drove the CSR class the last 5 years and had an absolute blast.
Hopefully, you've found your way in and are having fun, but the most new drivers, here is my solid advice. Start in Karting. Its much lighter on the wallet, storage and teaches you all the fundamentals in a quicker learning curve than full size cars. Spend the first two years in clutch karts...you quickly learn about maintaining momentum, the balance between how hard to brake into a corner and how to exit to maintain maximum speed into the next corner and even how to play psychological games to set up a pass against other drivers. When you get consistently on the podium, move up to shifter karts. By the time you take a school for full size cars, I guarantee you will be one of, if not the flat-out fastest students in the school by far, and as soon as you learn suspension setups and have a decent motor builder, you are always going to be up front. Though, due to financial reasons, I spent most of my career in karting, the few times I did delve into full size cars, weather it be Formula Ford, Formula Mazda, Sprint cars or Midgets, I was a constant threat for the podium. Those of us that started in and were successful in Karting make up most of the champions of any category.

How was the power of the Judd compared to the Peugeot? Michael Andretti lapped Road America at about 1:36 in qualifying in his Ford powered Swift. But that was a veteran racing the car's nuts off back in the days when CART (true Indycars) was a legitimate threat to Formula One. How do you think the '97 Jordan would do with a full set up and an veteran driver? Wouldn't it have more trouble in the Kink as ground effects were banned?

What motor is in it now? It sounds higher pitch and it makes me happy every time you flew by coming out of the carousel.
23 year old F1 chassis with a replacement motor lapping 14 seconds a lap faster than a current prototype. All you need to know. Can you imagine current F1 cars there? Woof...
Now looking more closely at your cornering, were you hesitant to do turn 7 into "Hurry Downs" flat out as CART drivers did it? Seems like you held back a lot in the Carousel and the Kink, or was that because of down-force performance of the chassis? The Newer tires should give you more grip than even Champ Cars had with their late 90s Goodyears and Firestones. Not sure about the Bridgestone Reds though. Those tires had grip out the wazoo. Even more than today's IZOD's Firestone Reds.

is the judd engine an v8? it sound more like gp 2 or an old low rev formula 3000 engine.

This is the V10 Judd that produces roughly 750hp. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the original Peugot made somewhere around 850.

James French the peugeot a14 engine had 750bhp max. for qualifying and a bit more than 680bhp in race trim. which judd engine is fitted to this car? if it's the judd jv it actually run in that season, but re-badged as yamaha in the tyrell and arrows.

One question, why are you not racing? Is it difficult to get in the sport or that's not your priority? I'm just wondering how hard it is to actually get going.
I am, but I have only been dabbing in ALMS the last few years as well as club and vintage racing. I'm doing the Motorsports Engineering program at IUPUI, so once I'm done with that I'll hopefully be doing much more driving. I'll keep you guys posted.

R.A seems an ideal circuit for F1.I wonder just how much it would take to bring it up to 'modern'(ie bloody bernies) specs?

Aside from the track related "upgrades" would be addressing the lack of hotels, parking, seating and roads capable of handling such an insane amount of traffic. It'd be complete gridlock on every road in every town within 25 miles. I really wish they could pull it off tho. I think F1 and Elkhart is a match made in heaven

@@elikedrowski6181 The crowd for an F1 race is likely to be smaller than the peak of IC races were. In the mid 90's IC at RA had crowds north of 135K. So, roads, parking and seating isn't going to be a problem. Unless you think that for some reason the F1 crowd is going to be significantly larger than any other F1 race. Many F1 races don't break the 100K mark. I would also venture to say that an F1 crowd at RA today would be much smaller than the average F1race of today. IC crowds in those days did a lot of camping at places like RA and MidOhio. No way are a significant portion of the F1 crowd would be up for camping. You could pretty much forget about the international crowd flying to Wisconsin. Hotels are the real problem from a logistics standpoint. Actual track upgrades are the real problem. Then you have track infrastructure that would never draw an F1 race. People either forget or are not aware that when F1 was at Indy that most of the top members of the various teams and stewards where actually flying back and forth(helicopters) from Chicago because there were not enough high end hotel rooms in Indy. I guess that now they either suck it up and slumming it in Austin or they are doing the same thing and commuting to Dallas.
Would be the perfect place for a 12 or 24 hour race.
But short sighted county laws prohibit any such event.
So the Double 500s were about it…

SuLRaC It is a V10, but not the Peugeot they ran in 1997. It's a 4.0L Judd V10 that makes about 800hp.

@@sulrac1830 The Jordan 195, wowie! That's one of my favourite F1 cars with all its bright colours and the sleek look (not to mention the round sidepods). I loved seeing it in person at Spa with Rubinho behind the wheel way back in 1995 :) Needless to say, I am jealous of your friend ;)
P1nkR yes a very nice car. The car has been rebuild completely and it’s 100% the components from 1995 (engine gearbox electronic). The car ran a few times in Magny cours. It’s was the car of Irvine which made the podium in Canada and was burned in spa during the pit stop.
How much would a used f1 car go for? It doesn't have to be of any historical significance.
The ones I've seen go anywhere from $25,000-$200,000 and you still have to think about cost for storage ,tires, engine repairs, track time, etc. so in the long run you got to have a bit of money to play around with

Looked faster! CART lapped about 1:40's in heyday 90's. And yes, they did lift to set up Turn 7. You drove the kink as I do. No one knows but the driver what is happening in a real race car. Period. (Modern day F1 excluded) As a instructor and racer, it is hard to believe how fast s**t happens! F1 @ RA? Its not the track, its Bernie's greed.
This is NOT F-1. It is SCCA club racing!! F-1 has never raced at Road America!! Unfortunately they never will because there are no large cities nearby to feed and house the teams and millions of fans!! I have been there many times and it is a great track in the middle of small farming towns with very little restaurants and motels.

EJ-10 was an energy drink marketed by the Jordan Formula One team. The energy drink was heavily advertised as free of caffeine and taurine to avoid a sugar crash, and as having a fruity flavor and providing energy for up to 90 minutes. It was sold in bright yellow 250 mL and 380 mL bottles, decorated to evoke the image of Jordan's Formula One cars.[6] Jordan Grand Prix used the Sutherland Hawes design agency to create and market the energy drink.[7] At the height of its popularity EJ-10 was available around the world, including Ireland, Germany, Colombia, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico.[8][9]
In 2002, the 380 ml bottles of EJ-10 were recalled in Ireland after it was discovered it contained unacceptable levels of benzene.[10]
V-10 is a spinoff of EJ-10; it retains the basic formula but adds vodka.[11]

I'm going to disagree with much of the comments. Go race Formula Ford for a Year to learn the basics of mechanical grip, then Formula 2000 for a year to add some areo grip, then get into a Formula 3 car or Formula Atlantic for a year, and THEN get back in the F1 car. With all due respect, you need 3 years actual race training - cause you suck! To the trained eye, you go fast where its totally safe and yet brake at least double the distance required and then so slow in the corners, usually in the wrong gear, the Aero doesn't even produce down force. I don't have much respect for rich guys who want to pretend they are race car drivers. Go learn the basics first.
