@@elappo1824 That's because the solution for the 2nd part feels in adequate, there's a huge leap in logic to get to the path it takes towards the solution
The first puzzle was easy, the second felt like kind of a stretch. I mean, I noticed all the founders had Ms in their names, but that's about as far as I got. There are so many possible combinations of what pattern could emerge with that many names and letters.

I agree. I feel like it was asking you to make far too many assumptions. I was looking for some logic with how the first 4 houses were named that could be used to name the 5th; not a completely different logic for the 5th. There were also 8 founders and no founders founded more than 1 house; so who founded the 5th? If Marigold didn't found the academy or any of the houses why is school named after her? The hint also says all the founder's names were the same length as the house names for a reason; but the only founder name that actually had a reason to be 8 letters long is hypnotum. None of them needed to have a name past the letter M in their name. Without going to the hint page there also was no mention of the School's name to indicate the importance of the letter M and the screen with all the information we're supposed to solve the puzzle, should have all the information we need to solve the puzzle. And while all the founders have a letter M in their name, not all the houses do; so i don't think without the name of the school, we should expect to notice an obsession with the letter M.
I noticed the Ms and that every M was in a different position in each name, but I didn't know what to do with that information. I tried pulling the letter right before and right after each M, or the letters at the beginnings and ends of each name, but had nothing.

Does anyone else think the second part of this problem is totally different from anything else in the series? I mean, with all of the other riddles there’s a clear right and wrong answer and a series of logical steps to deduce it, but this one is more open ended. “Figure out the name of the secret house” could be anything; the solution just involves making a series of associations until you find something that makes sense.
Normally I’d choose “Meramaid”, given my affinity for water, and beauty. But in this scenario, I’d choose the Minotaur house. Just think of all the perks! Not only do you have riches and untouched artifacts, but you also get the entire common room to yourself. So you can have all the peace and quiet you want. Sure, said common room is probably covered in cobwebs and dust from being undisturbed all these years, but one can assume the school’s cleaning staff can fix things up in a jiffy. And if you’re afraid about being lonely, don’t be. You may be the only member of your house, but you can still converse and make friends with members of the other houses, one would assume. And given that you just discovered the secret 5th house, it’s safe to assume everybody’s curious about you and will want to get to know you. It’s easily the right answer, in my opinion.
I was literally just thinking all of this. Like, I won’t be lonely, cause I can make friends with my classmates. I will just be alone at night. Plus, it might be different to Hogwarts and let you have other classmates in your common room
You know, I love how TED-Ed takes mundane puzzle frameworks, and twists them into interesting stories that you actually want to listen to, and then try and solve the riddle. If education systems around the world confirmed to such methodology, then I can't even imagine how much more fun learning would become.

Hey, it's okay if you don't get to answer the riddle yourself. More Ravenclaws are gonna have to go to their common room at some point, meaning that _eventually_ someone, or all of you working together, will be able to answer the riddle and let everyone in. Everyone else can learn something new, too. I guess that's one of the interesting perks of being a Ravenclaw; you're guaranteed to learn at least one thing everyday.
I got the answer to the first one on my own and was sorted into Ravenclaw by the pottermore test, so I guess I can consider myself a real Ravenclaw now? Lol
This riddle is well crafted, and a lot of fun to solve. Hints helped to, when we need a little nudge but not exactly the answer. Do keep the riddles coming, TED-Ed!
Forget Durmstrang, Beaubaxtons and Ilvermony. Who cares about Hogwarts? Magnificent Marigold's Magical Macademy is where I'll go to learn the Magic of Riddles. Oops.
Alternatively, you could start the riddle like this; if Funflame and Imaginez founded Gianteye and Longmous (perhaps not respectively) and Miraculo and Rimbelby founded Meramaid and Longmous (perhaps not respectively), that means none of them could have founded Vidopnir, nor could have Septimus. That leaves us with Tremenda, Deepmire and Hypnotum. Deepmire wears a blue hat like Tremenda and it has stars like Hypnotum's, so she's out. Tremenda and Hypnotum founded Vidopnir.
5:08 He isn’t the first person to solve the answer for the fifth house. The monks from the crystal riddle kept the four element crystals in it, and some of the scoundrel’s rubies from the stolen ruby riddle are in there as well.
Well, we can assume these don't come out in chronological order, since you've got riddles set after space travel is commonly in use, like the three gods riddle, before riddles where monarchies are still in fashion, like the cheating royal riddle. Perhaps this riddle is set before those ones.
Who says you can't have friends from the other houses? What you wouldn't have is roommates, and that's a major plus in my book. Have all the friends you want when you're out and about, but have a place of your own to go back to.
I normally just watch these videos without trying the puzzles just because I like learning about the methods of solving them, but this is the first one where I actually sat down and solved it on my own. I didn’t get the final house name, but I figured out the founders of each house
I thought it was Marigold since it’s on the crest and it’s 8 letters same as the founder’s names and the house’s names 🥴 I even asigned it the missing yellow+swirl hat founder 🥲🤣
"Being in the secret house would come at a high price: loneliness." Well, 0 friends is better than negative friends, so still a win for me and my negative social skills
This is probably my favorite Ted-Ed riddle ever! Never been a huge Harry Potter fan but I love the systematic organization and elegant logic of this riddle! 😁😆
This is the first time I've ever actually felt interested in trying one of these riddles. I got the right answer, but solved used a completely different strategy lol!
I suggest watching and solving ted ed's einstein riddle if you enjoyed this! It's a bit more complex but it's similar to this sorting hat riddle in a way, and it's still manageable to solve :D Honestly one of my favorite ted ed riddles since it's one of the few I actually solved =v=
The video didn't even say to pause it or give you time to think, it rushed the explanation and then suddenly was spoiling the solution the next second, it did the same thing in the second part, the millisecond it unblurred the final clue it instantly spoiled the solution rather than giving a warning, wtf...
Oddly enough, I thought Minotaur as soon as he mentioned a fifth room because it just seemed to fit right in with the others rooms, it was pretty funny to have it actually be the answer.
When I tried to guess the name of the fifth house, I was stumped. The clue said that the word was 8 letters and to look at the school crest which said "Magnificent Marigold Magical Macademy," my guess was "Marigold." I also thought that the names of the founders had something to do with the house name, but couldn't make the connection. Putting their names in order of the position the "M" appeared in their name, putting their respective house name under their name, and using the position of the "M" to mark a letter of their house name was a bit of a stretch.
I figured it out when I noticed: 1. The names of all the founders had "m" in them at different positions 2. The secret house had the same length as the rest of the houses So I took the names of the founders and where the "m" was in their name, I replaced that with the house's letter, got "Minotaur" in like, 5 minutes.
Same had everyone all written out like I was planning a bank heist or something. But the Minotaur Ah ha moment was just god tier levels of satisfaction
There is also another starting point: if you realize that the founder of longmus has to be two of the four mage mentioned in rule 4 and 5, the only possible cooperation is between rimbley and funflame so that you already have one house down
Step 1: Solve riddle Step 2: Open the door to the Secret room Step 3: Confirm the treasure has green eyes Step 4: Go to your friends with the treasure Step 5: Profit
What puzzles me is how the Sorting Hat manages to place each student in to the proper house (based on their talents, skills, personality, preferences, etc) and still manages to divide them equally (at least roughly so) between the four houses.
Well, if it had prior knowledge of the features of all students, it could be done with a bit of tweaking of the criteria that will be used... It would be a similar task to rounding off percentages so that the total will still give 100%, since that might require knowledge of all the values before deciding whether to round something like .42 up or down. (a.33 , b.42 , and c.25 would need to be rounded to a, b+1, and c.)
"Being in the secret house would come at a high price: loneliness." Sad thing is, if you actually took your time and solved this one all by yourself, you most probably have no friends already
me: *obsessing over the Harry Potter references throughout the video* TED-Ed: The last house is Minotaur me: * Gasps in Percy Jackson* PS: don't come at me for associating Minotaur with PJ. it was my way of being introduced to it
Solved the first part, almost solved the name of the secret door! I like the puzzles with elimination graphs, they're simple to comprehend and solve on paper.
Moldevort: I solved the riddle! Sorting hat: Which house would you like to be in? Moldevort: I want Minotaur, not Giant eye. Sorting hat: hmm... Sorting hat: Not Longmous or Meramaid? Moldevort: Yeah I want Minotaur! Sorting hat: *GIANTEYE IT IS!*
Step 1: Confirm you have green eyes Step 2: Realize you can’t apply it here Step 3: Realize 10 months later that you could’ve confirmed the door had green eyes and asked its magic to leave
I`m so proud of myself for solving both parts of this. The secret house took me a long time, but I got there eventually. Needed up until hint 3 to get it
Alright, I never would've figured out the 5th house's name. From the moment the challenge was given and the rule "no founders founded more than 1 house" was stated, I thought the riddle would have something to do with needing to find a secret 5th pair of founders. The hint "consider the school's name, crest, and motto" made me hone in on the fact that "Marigold" and "Macademy" are both 8 letters, the same number as all the founders and house names. Of course, I went mad trying to do anything with that information because I was on the complete wrong track. Guess I won't be getting any riches!
My guesses for the last house went from Marigold (too easy, hadn't seen the 2nd set of clues), to Mirtdsfh (nonsense?), and then to the answer (actually spells something!). Fun riddle!
Yay! The first riddle I ever solved! I did it a bit differently than spreadsheets, tho. I mapped each founder's possible companions (so Deepmire could only be partners with Funflame, Imaginez and Miraculo, for example). Then, I started testing out each of the possibilities for the two rules 4 and 5 to look for contradictions. Once I placed the 4 wizards in their respective houses, I just started crossing out the possible companions list based on who I had already placed.
U can also find out name of 5th house in a different way, arrange all the founders name in descending order of position of letter M, Hypnotum, Funflame and so on... then see last letters of every founder's name. MESEAYZO can be another answer, this can also be pronounced unlike other answers. Makers should have added rules to restrict this outcome.

Oddly enough, I thought Minotaur as soon as he mentioned a fifth room because it just seemed to fit right in with the others rooms, it was pretty funny to have it actually be the answer.
That’s like rolling a 6 on a die then rolling 6 dice and they are all 6 and Cassandra scoring a 700
How would Minotaur fit right in with the other rooms?
0:10 nice reference to an older riddle, the Wizards’ Duel.
Same I thought it was Marigold
I figured it out when I noticed:
1. The names of all the founders had "m" in them at different positions
2. The secret house had the same length as the rest of the houses
So I took the names of the founders and where the "m" was in their name, I replaced that with the house's letter, got "Minotaur" in like, 5 minutes.

(a.33 , b.42 , and c.25 would need to be rounded to a, b+1, and c.)
i think it implies that the qualities of each house are equally likely for a person to have

Great riddle, I got this.
Interesting how the secret name is solvable without the later hints.

Hello there, fellow Potterhead
Eyyyyy Potterhead here
*Hello there*
