This was a fascinating riddle.... But i had once read about Fibonacci sequence in Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code and decided to dig deeper... And because of that, i knew the answer right away.

Fun fact: The author of Alice in Wonderland was a mathematician and his books are full of math references.
For example, when Alice falls down the hole and begins shrinking, she wonders if she'll eventually disappear or shrink indefinitely. This hints at the concept and definition of a limit.
It's no wonder various authors have used Alice and her adventures to write and logic and math books.
It fits so well.
Fun fact: Queen Victoria liked the book so much that she suggested that Carroll dedicate his next work to her. And *An Elementary Treatise on Determinants, With Their Application to Simultaneous Linear Equations and Algebraic Equations* was presented to the queen

If Alice is able to solve this puzzle in three seconds while being dragged to her death, she's clearly a prodigy. No wonder she was so bored of her sister's simple history lesson that she fell asleep.

Recently I watched a video of a math teacher explaining this problem and while I kinda get it, it didn't clicked for me. The chessboard and the gap is such a wonderful illustration that helps my visual brain to process it better.

Okay I am going to use this comment as a notepad while solving the puzzle because I am on a phone.
1. The easiest way to prove something wrong, is by seeing what happens if we assume it is right. We can ignore the 8x8 and 5x13 shapes because they both ( if the queen is right ) must be the sum of the 4 shapes so the first step should be to find the area of each one.
2. The area of both trapezoids are the same as the area of a square and a triangle that form them so it is equal to (5x3)+1/2(5x2)=15+5=20 square units each. Also The area of the triangles are 1/2(8x3)=12
3. The total area of the shapes is 20+20+12+12= 64 making it clear that the queen is cheating in the 65 grid. In the 65 x 65 grid, there is a clear diagonal line that runs from 2 corners. If the queen is true, the. The sum of the area of the trapezoid and the triangle is half of 65. But half of 65 is 32.5 and the sum of the 2 pieces are 32 clearly proving that the pieces do not exactly equal 65
4. Now with all this evidence, all that is left is to find the location of the missing square. Clearly the trickery is inside the diagonal line that divides the 2 sections of the shape. I think that the missing square is somewhere in the middle of the line, I am not sure where. I am pretty confused here and am going to stop now

If they didn't, it would have been too obvious. Besides, the gap would have been less than a tenth of a square wide at its widest point.

I was able to solve the riddle but in a different approach.
Given the Queen's arrangement of the four soldiers, it would seem that a rectangle can be formed. Even if the total area of the four shapes sums up to 64 sq. units and cannot form a shape that's more or less than the mentioned area, there's been cases like the infinite chocolate bar puzzle that beg to differ.
To check if the 13x5 rectangle is possible, see if the measure of the rectangle's diagonal matches with the sum of the diagonal side of the trapezoid and the hypotenuse of the triangle.
If one were to look closely at the trapezoid, there is a right triangle within the trapezoid. Split the trapezoid into a 5x3 rectangle and a right triangle with legs 2 and 5. Using the Pythagorean Theorem, the hypotenuse of the right triangle within the trapezoid, which is also the diagonal side of the trapezoid, is sqrt29.
Now let's take a look at the hypotenuse of the triangles with legs 8 and 3. Using the Pythagorean Theorem once more, we get a hypotenuse of sqrt73.
Now let's take a look at the diagonal of the supposed 13x5 rectangle. To get the measure of the said diagonal, we use the Pythagorean Theorem again. We get a measure of sqrt194. If the rectangle can be formed with the four soldiers, then the diagonal of the rectangle should be the same as the sum of the hypotenuse of the right triangle solder and the diagonal side of the trapezoid soldier.
sqrt194 is approximately 13.928
sqrt29 + sqrt73 is approximately 13.929
Since the two values above are not equal to each other, the 13x5 rectangle cannot be formed with the four soldiers/shapes. As such, the extra square comes from the gap at the supposed diagonal of the rectangular chessboard as shown in the video.

That was exactly how I approached it!
I found the sum of the areas of the soldiers to determine whether I should look for a surplus or a deficit-or, equivalently, which rectangle contains the error/cheat. (of course it's a gap; overlaps are more obvious)
Since the external dimensions matched the areas of the rectangles, there had to be a gap between the soldiers within the 5x13 rectangle. The lines running parallel to the sides of the rectangle will fit tightly together regardless, so the only place left for a gap-"are the large triangles really triangles?", check the slopes like Alice. 2/5 ≠ 3/8.
You know how other methods of finding the solution sort of pop out once you've solved the problem? You could also compare the slopes to the 5/13 of the rectangle's diagonal.
Yep, I did it in similar way.
Figured out the slopes thing right away but got stumped trying to figure out how they could possibly be covering the board anyway. Some clarification of the constraints of the question would've been nice, as I didn't think "they aren't" was a valid response.

Alice: See’s a minuscule gap
The gap: *Size of the Grand Canyon*
To get the limit solution: (1) Start with a rectangle with an aspect ratio of phi^2 to 1 (2.618:1). (2) Cut the rectangle along the diagonal, so you end up with 2 congruent triangles with the same aspect ratio. (3) Lay the triangles one on top of the another and align them so they appear as one triangle. (4) On the longer side of the triangles, mark a perpendicular line at phi^-1 (0.618) of the way in. (5) Cut the triangles along the marked line. (6) Rearrange the resulting triangles and trapezoids into a square. In the limit case, you should not have any excess or missing material.
I'm so happy that I got this one!! My method was different, though. The small angle is 21.03 degrees on the triangle created by the diagonal of the 13*5 rectangle, but the 8*3 triangle had a smaller angle of 20.56 degrees.
Mindblowing fact: this equation b^2=ac+1 does not only pertain to fibonacci numbers but to each and every squared natural number. If you try it, you will see that no matter of the natural number you have, odd or even, when raised to the power of two, is the same as the multiplication of its two adjacent natural numbers plus one. So, in order to calculate a square root of a given number, you can either multiply it by itself or use this formula here.

Great riddle! The recent riddles have been a little boring but now you're back, Ted Ed! I was stuck on this one for a long time and almost gave up but then I did the math. I figured that something must be wrong with ____ (no spoilers here!) and located the issue.
Besides, what a wonderful story and animation! The Alice in Wonderland theme is a great way to show how miraculous but universally true mathematics are.

These riddles are always so interesting and I love how they are being presented. I admit, I couldn't solve this riddle by myself, but now I know the explanation and the Fibonacci numbers, so I'll know what to do next time)
Alice could've:
1. Tell the queen and king that one of the cards have green eyes
2. PIck either The High Priestess or The soul and don't pick The Tower on the first turn
3. Don't accept the unobtanium
4. Lick the group of 2 frogs
5. Stand in line, shortest to tallest
6. Realize that irony does not mean funny or coincidental
7. Drop a red, purple, or a blue egg in the incubator
8. Write "Banach-Tarski" on your name tag and 22 on the back of your shirt

I couldn't solve the riddle but learnt something new.
It's 'ch' as in 'choke', not like 'ch' as in 'school' in Fibonacci.

What is truly sad is that he used the pen name Lewis Carroll in his fictional works to disassociate them with his work in the mathematical profession. Instead, the name of Charles Dodgson has almost been lost.

Me: No. No, I can't
Well I overengineered it... I identified the right triangles, then figured out the lengths of their hypotenuses with the Pythagorean theorem, then divided the short sides with the respective hypotenuses to get the sinus values of the smaller angles , and then used the inverse sinus function to figure out the angles the sinus values correspond to. Sure enough they were different.

Then the video comes at me with a subtraction and two divisions, and reaches the same conclusion...

At least this is the first riddle I actually got around to figuring out myself, before watching the solution.
Nobody did this yet so here I go:

I love how I thought of this really long and hard but didn't even get close to the answer
After watching the video I got in a real puzzle. Despite that having 64 and 65 being the same it's still different, even in the fibonnachi sequence that tells them that their the same it's still isn't fully calculated to fill the whole checkerboard. But if that small gap on the 5x13 checkerboard is that missing square they wouldn't be able to know that small gap's true area. In the video they said the slopes length in the shapes are 0.4 and 0.375, the area is 0.15. The 8x8 fills in with the shapes that explains it's 64, but in for 5x13 that equals 65 and you minus 0.15 it's 64.85 making it greater than 64
