Thanks for posting. I’m an 80 year old amateur guitarist, currently working on solo arranging and playing my favorite jazz and pop and light classical stuff. I’m always looking for ways to get the rhythm and harmony interesting. Thanks for posting.
This was really helpful, you break down concepts into easy to dissect parts. Just starting to play out so comping to others is still new, and this feels like a perfect start. Thanks Peter!
Adam? Adam? Peter, you rocked it but i missed you when you were gone and i miss Adam now. Yo Adam, you better get back quickly and defend this verbal challenge Peter through at you! I love this podcast/video.
Great stuff. What really moves me is your time feel--you really pop! And you really know how to teach. Have you ever heard about Jeb Patton? He wrote some really interesting books on comping called "An Approach to Comping". He transcribed the comping of Bill Evans, Bud Powell, Hank Jones--just to name a few--on famous records. Good stuff!
@@jonathanflores2302 I took a handful on lessons with him right before I moved to the West Coast. Jeb actually introduced me to my mentor. Great guy, he even brought his wife into a lesson so we could practice accompanying a vocalist. He did all that and I don't even play piano, I'm a guitarist :)
@@pickinstone Jeb's a great guy! I took lessons with him at Five Towns College. Whenever he was playing in the practice rooms, I would stop and eavesdrop because he's such a killer on the keys.
This is both on topic and off topic at the same time because the question is so broad. How well does the John Mehegan approach to jazz piano (see his book series) stand up to the current approach to jazz?
The beginning song..what's it called? I am naturally rhythmic, but the sheet music..jazz mainly. eg. Donna Lee seems to the have the chords at random places. Almost as if it was done by feel. Great Video. Subscribed.
uUpdate.on Donna Lee.. Realized awhile back that Ab diatonic 7 chords combined with the circle of fifths.. I recently did used a Donna Lee IRealPro backing track playing about 20 measures of Donna Lee..I slowed it to 90 BPM. Also I comped over it mainly sevenths loosely based on the tune. It's not up yet. I ll make sure to follow you guys.
Glastonbury, Scotland? You're thinking of Glasgow, Peter; Glastonbury is in England, and it's a long way down south, in Somerset. Otherwise, an excellent lesson!
Was that Adam crap really necessary!?! Do you have any idea how infuriating childish nonsense like that is when you want to learn something and have to keep running through it to get to the point. Too much talk as well 👎👎👎
Well you’re still missing the point so I think you better run through it a few more times. I slowed down the video and took notes to try to learn how peter plays the tune and how he voices his chords. You sound really funny mate
Barry Hunt you shouldn’t be allowed on the internet. Or anywhere probably. You sound like a terrible human. Go pay for lessons. It if you pay someone they might put up with YOUR childish nonsense.
This channel is a very strong contender for number one youtube jazz resource (IMO)
🤷🏻♂️❤
For sure!
Aimee nolte is also pretty amazing.
And walk that bass
@@georgehiggins1320 yeah but she weirds me out too much
@@jahnellbroomfield7172 That's fair. Different people learn well in different ways. I think her content is a valuable resource to know about though.

Reminds me of the saying that anything you start doing at even 80 years old, you'll be an expert at 90 years old.
Thanks for putting these on TH-cam. It helps a ton to be able to see how you are voicing things.
A proud member of OS here, love your playing Peter!!
Best podcast ever!!
2:16 video starts
The opening was fly though.

Amazing lesson. That live demonstration in the piano is really, really useful. Great explanations, great playing, great sound.

Great lesson Peter!

What do you recommend using to clean keyboard after playing it with fingers steeped in moist trail mix dust? ;-)
I was super confused until I watched the video 😂

Uh sure it's all fun and games until Adam comes back. Then you will have to "Straighten up and fly Right".
On a 10 minute video, you eat? First time I've ever seen that !!
