Lochby Pocket Journal - Unboxing & First Impressions

- In this video I unbox and give you my first impressions of the Lochby Pocket Journal! This brown waxed canvas journal cover has a zipper closure and holds 3.5x5.5" pocket size inserts (field note size) and has exterior pen/tool pockets and a back pouch, and internal card, mini pen and passport pockets. It can comfortably hold 2 of the pocket size inserts. It comes with 1 - 68 gsm Tomoe River paper insert. This isn't a full review by any means but I show you all the features and give my impressions. Plus I show my Lochby Field Journal cover which I have used for several months daily for my A5 size bullet journal. That cover is made from the same waxed canvas and rugged construction methods!

After checking it out (to answer Arlene's question) I found out that the 3.5x5.5 Stillman & Birn Softcover Sketchbook that came in an Ink Flight subscription last year does fit nicely into this Lochby cover.
I’m not usually tempted by journal covers (not a journaller) but this one is the exception. I love the waxed fabric and interior. Thanks, Chris.

I have the the Field Journal and the Tool Roll and am enjoying both. I especially like the Field Journal because it takes so many different kinds of A5 notebooks, hard cover and softcover. You can carry what ever you want! Now the Pocket Journal wants to join the family.
Hi Sharon - the tool roll is calling out to me!!! :) I've resisted because I have 3 pen rolls that I love - but they will only accommodate pens not extras so the tool roll really appeals to me! :) And it's a LONG time til my birthday ... LOL.

Great looking notebook! The back pocket would be just right for some 3” x 5” notecards.

Thanks, Chris! That's what I needed to see. I have some Leuchtturms and Moleskines in pocket versions. It seems only Moleskine will fit in there, since it's 3.5 x 5.5. Good to know. I can't wait to get one, but the shipping to Europe is on hold. The honeycomb lining is an awesome touch. Best regards from Poland!

Hi Chris. I watch this video when it first came out. Now I have been looking for a small journal w/ cover and remembered you reviewed the Lochby Pocket Journal in early 2020. I watched the video again today because I am seriously looking for a pocket journal and remembered this review. Well, I bought it just a few minutes ago, along with its big brother, the field journal. Now, I am going to be anxiously waiting for both to arrive.

Hi Barbara - oh I think you will super enjoy both the Field Journal and Pocket Journal - mine are in daily use since receiving them!!!! I have my daily bullet journal in the Field Journal and my gratitude set up in the pocket journal. My husband has our household checkbook set up in his pocket journal. He loves that it zips up and has room for his pens and small calculator! :) Which color did you get?
@@ChrisSaenz13 I bought the brown canvas for the pocket journal and black for the field journal. They should arrive here on Wednesday. I plan on using the field journal with my bullet journal. I love all the pockets. The pocket journal will become a daily carry item in my purse or backpack. I have been looking for one that size for a while.
Hi Chris! Excellent video. I have been so curious about this pocket setup, and am so glad to see you do some testing with what fits inside and outside. I’m glad to know how the Lamy Vista fits, and it gives me a great comparison for the type of pens I carry. And your mini ballpoint pen is a perfect fit! I love the inserts from Lochby also. Not many companies out there use a stitched binding, and that is my favorite. Thank you so much for your impressions! 🧡

Hi Chris! I love this notebook cover. I considered getting one last week, but I have an A5 Kokuyo Systemic Notebook Cover and several A5 Apica inserts that I need to use up before I get one. I love everything about this notebook: the waxed canvas, the honeycomb patterned yellow lining, the portability, and the little pen pocket inside (it's perfect for my Kaweco Lilliput). This is perfect for a gratitude journal.
Honeycomb ... that's the word I couldn't think of!!! Thank you!!! Yes, I was so excited that my Pokka pen fit inside! :)
Thank you so much for sharing this! I love all the pockets, and I love the zipper! I’ve been interested in the bigger version, but even with reviews, I’m just scared something might fall out because of the closure. I have a million pocket notebooks though so this would be great for taking on the go!
Hi Manda - so far I've had no problems with the Field Journal as far as things falling out but I do use a pen case and I only put 2 pens in it - one in the pen loop and one with a tight clip clipped inside. :) This new Pocket Journal is so popular in my house that my husband wants me to order him one too.

Hi Teresa - I have the wax but have not tried this yet. The large Field Journal needs to be done and I've run into different instructions so I've been trying to figure whether I need to do the heat set part with my hair drier and I'm chicken too because of all the cat hair flying around my house but as soon as I get brave and try this I'll do a video about it!!!!!! :) I ordered the bar of Otter Wax from Lochby and it's here!

I have the older "Bond Travel Gear" version of this and it was my main way of carrying a pen and notebook for quite some time, so it's nice to see that they've re-launched it.
The Bond version had an additional webbed pocket, though to be honest I've never found a good use for that pocket so I wouldn't consider its removal a loss here.

Would that pocket you put the pokka pen inside also fit a kaweco lilput fountain pen?
Hi Phillip - I am not familiar with the Liliput but the pen would need to be no longer length than 82 mm. Also in case it helps the diameter of the Pokka pen that fits is approximately: 11.45 mm.
I have wanted one since they were released.
Ironically, I picked up a different waxed canvas cover for my feild notes from all day ruckoff, about a week before this was announced.
I will probably still get one of the Lochby covers at some point.
While the one I got is well made, it does not have the functionality of the Lochby.
The one good thing about mine is that it is probably large enough for hardbound 3x5 notebooks. That doesn't help me much. I would rather have the smaller profile.

I wonder if this would hold a Stillman & Birn softcover sketchbook in the 3.5x5.5 size. Probably not, since I just measured and mine is 1/2in. thick.
Hi Arlene -- I just checked my Stillman & Birn Softcover 3.5x5.5 does fit and it zips easily. The issue with my black notebook was that it is ALMOST 3/4" thick and the orange one was about 1/2" taller measuring at just 1/8" shy of 6 inches. But the Stillman Birn is just right - and I'm really glad to know it fits!!! Hope this helps!
Chris Saenz Thanks Chris. If that’s the case, I just may need this! I like to carry a minimalist sketch kit in my backpack/purse and that would keep the sketchbook and a fountain pen or two and a mechanical pencil all together. Could also throw it in a pocket.
@@arlenealennox3136 I think it would be a great choice for the sketch notebook. I got my little notebook in an Ink Flight box last year. It fits really good.

Hi Sharon - I'll be doing a February update soon on my Depth/Mindful year. It's always difficult to self-diagnose when it comes to spending ... and sometimes I can not tell until much later ... ! I am having some interesting "wants" and it is surprising that my ink spending seems to be trying to shift over to pens and covers ... or so it seems. I'm doing a lot better at saving for my trip and my glasses (out ahead of the needs) but ... I can see that changing habits is really a complicated matter. Complicated more by attempting to separate out personal spending from channel spending. I'll save the rest of my thoughts for the update. :)

Hi Andrew - I can't remember and right now they are restocking soon probably by mid-July these will be back in stock ... so when I went to look it up - they didn't have the prices .. the larger one is $39 but I'm not sure on the pocket size.
