This really is what I love on the internet. One dude has a song stuck in his head and 10 people jump in to make it beautiful.
I've said it elsewhere but it still blows my mind that none of these people know each other.
there was like 20 other people the duetted this and it sounded just like the original it was amazing. so was this but bro it was glorious
Well it’s a sea shanty it’s meant to be sung by a group of people
Honestly what he said about none of the singers knowing each other in real life resonates with me.
I'm really into the cosplay community, particularly steampunk. At fairs it's not uncommon to find someone belting out a sea shanty. Give it 5 minutes or less and 10 people who don't know each other join in. If an instrumentalist is nearby (steampunk events have A LOT of them) you may well find them adding their talents.
This video brought me a little bit of what I'd missed out on this past year.
@@hugoj1129 Yes. But the cool part of this is these people weren't singing it as a group. None of these people have met. All the parts were sung separately by people who enjoyed the original and someone did a mash up.
thias is my favourite side of Tik Tok,nobody is being Toxic, no celebrity drama just people vibing together and singing, its just so peaceful.

I sang ‘baritone’ in a women’s acapella group and I can confirm that nobody could hear us but they knew if we weren’t there.
@@doomyboi Oh it does add to the composition it's just a thankless role of not being distinctly heard like a soprano/tenor or a deep bass
@@doomyboi you have mutant years. The only time I hear baritone man is for a second before the next person comes in. How do you hear him?
@@doge8825 I don't know. There's just a really, REALLY noticeable voice that shows up when he starts singing right after "Double Bass." If I was hearing them all singing at the same time without anyone being added in in the middle of it with a visual cue, maybe it wouldn't be as noticeable to me.

Some very talented people here. This is being sung in C minor, which is a very difficult key signature to play on a violin. The violinist handles it amazingly, even winding eighth notes around different harmonies in the song. Also, that low note the bass singer hits is a C2, two octaves below middle C! Very impressive
thanks for sharing these details - fascinating
Thanks for this John. I've recently started trying to get my head around my first instrument, and the music theory that comes with it. I think I get the idea of singing a song in a key... but how can you tell what it is just from hearing it?
Will- I sat down at my piano and played a few keys until I found the notes that matched. I quickly found the "root" to be C, and the A, B, and E were flats, so that marks it as C minor. I've had 12 collective years of formal piano/pipe organ lessons, but I still can't pick a key out without having something to match it to. There are, however, more highly gifted people than myself who can pick out any note just from hearing it. Music is fascinating and I love all styles and genres of it. I wish you much encouragement and success in your musical studies!
@@MuleSkinnerWS Ah I see, that make sense. Thanks for taking the time to get back to me.
And yeah, cheers - it's a melodeon (diatonic accordion) I'm playing, which rather suits the world of sea shanties!

As a filler baritone I feel that feeling of not being heard but playing a important role for smoothness of the song entirely huge respect
You'll find most sea shanties are pretty catchy. That was the whole point of a shanty, to get the crew working together in rythmic motion on a specific task. There are different types of shanty for different tasks aboard a sailing ship - short haul shanties, halyard shanties, pumping shanties, capstan shanties etc.
i didn't know that
I, also, didn't know that. Going to have to do some research.

They are about working hard and living in confined spaces with very limited social interactions and are supposed to give hope and strength in this situation that just feels like a never ending... oh.
Anyway, if there where a 10 hour version I would probably listen to it to get through the days. :-)
Me, too, buddy.

They are work songs too. They help the sailors keep time when they are hauling ropes. There was a lot of hauling ropes on old sailing vessels!
@@burlatsdemontaigne6147 Similar to the drums they used to have on ships, if the crew doesn't keep in time with eachother it causes problems - shanties did what SmellsLikeBrass said also though so were much better at the job

A million remixes, orchestrations, variations, official singers and performers have done this song to absurdum, and yet... this is the version I keep going back to, because it's the only one that's AUTHENTIC. It's the only one that's exactly like you might have heard it on a ship 150 years ago. No fancy instruments, no sound mixing, no autotune, no technology of any kind. Just one guy, as if standing on the edge of the deck, singing and pounding the wood of the railing with his fist, joined impromptu by several others, one who happens to have brought a fiddle onboard, to create a simple harmonious masterpiece.

Crazy a song century’s old can just be recreated like this. Love being human😂
I swear this is so addictive and really makes me think deeply about the history!
The intense human desire to make good music together.
Brilliant, Nathan, great to see a young man from the same Scottish town as me using his talent to bring great joy to so many. These sea shanties are such wonderful folk songs and deserve a wider audience.
"When she dived down low" I felt that.
You can really hear the resonance of that bass note lol
Omg yes
Reject humanity return to pirate
I would argue pirating is the essence of humanity.
We are the robots.
