I'm picturing a large group of world-weary sailors on a well-deserved shore leave singing this song in a tavern. Everybody's drinking, dancing, stomping their feet, clapping their hands, and generally having a good time.

As a sailor myself I can tell you this song and many others are played throughout all of a deployment. Including on shore leave! Its songs like these that help us through hard times on the sea and its awesome seeing all of us come together to have a good time!
Traditionally this type of song was sung when raising anchor. So you can sing it everywhere!

Just that simple “ready?” at the start of this version makes me so happy. And when I first heard this on Spotify out of the blue randomly one day that bass vocal blew my mind.

I used to sing this to my girls as an alarm clock to wake them when they were young 😂. Recently my youngest (who's 27 now) sent me this link and it is my favorite rendition ever. The song has a warm place in the collective heart of my family and this captures it all and more.

I am fairly sure it is not so much about pranking a friend as threatening reprisals against someone who manages to get drunk at sea. And trust me you don't want to know what the bosun would come up with.

By far the best version of this song out there! I love that everyone gets their own little moment to shine, and the mix of the traditionalist influences with a more modern-style dance beat really works well!
I think one of my favorite things about this song, if you pay attention to the lyrics, it's essentially the definition of "don't fall asleep first at a sleepover." It's ALL about screwing around with shipmates who made less than stellar decisions and are now at the mercy of the rest. For some reason, that mentality really comes out with this version. Maybe it's the upbeat and peppy mood, the very fast tempo, or the inclusion of all the different instruments and voice parts. 11/10 on this one!

What I love about the Drunken Sailor Shanty is that just when I think I have all the lyric types there is always a new one I learn of. When I was a kid I learned one rendition of the shanty from my dad who is from a sailing town. The section I started with is "Throw 'em in the brig until he's sober" (x3). Every time I hear a version of Drunken Sailor I listen for it. There's so many renditions out there that it amazes me. I hope one day I will know all version of Drunken Sailor.
I heard a version where the body part they shaved with a rusty razor was a pair a bit south of the belly. As an old Soldier, I figured that's just what sailors did when they put out to sea... LOL Great song and amazing performance!!!!
@@glenny614 What's interesting is that the lyric variations like that are pretty common. The first version of Drunken Sailor I heard online used Longboat instead of Brigg. It's quite a long rabbit hole should you choose to explore it.
