Like the money and the fame. So when it's time to get their contract, they are as motivated as ever to play well so they can maximize their money. But once they get paid, most of that motivation dissipates and they just go through the motions and don't put forth the effort to get better.
Whistles go silent in the playoffs. It's part of the reason why both Harden and Embiid continually under-perform. That, and teams get to spend more time game-planning for you.
