@@AngryDemonCat exactly. that's why I plan to make a reboot of Fat Albert without Bill. it'll be all animation. no live-action segments. just Fat Albert and the gang having fun and teaching good lessons
Come on bro... Fat Albert and Smurfs can't be mentioned in the same sentence! Maybe Johnny Quest, Tarzan King of the Jungle (cartoon) or even Scooby Doo! I was chasing skirt when the Smurfs came out in the 80s!
I found it interesting that young Bill in the gang was actually Cosby himself as a boy, but his role in the show was more in the background and the greater focus was on the other kids. Gotta give him kudos for keeping his ego in check in that manner, if nothing else.
Cosby played Fat Albert, Bill, Mushmouth, Mudfoot, and The Brown Hornet. Filmation executive producer Lou Scheimer played Dumb Donald and Stinger. Eric Suter played Rudy. Jan Crawford (female) played Russell and Bucky. Gerald Edwards played Weird Harold. Lou Scheimer's wife Jay Scheimer played Tweeter Bell and Miss Wucher and Miss Breyfogle the teachers.
And don't forget that Bill really has a younger brother named Russell, who he used to talk about in his stand-up shows, and even mentioned in the title of one of his late '60s comedy albums. (The extended sketch on side two is all about young Bill and Russell trying to avoid their father's wrath as they stay up past bedtime, arguing and making noise in the middle of the night, it's hilarious.) All of these characters were based on real people, Cosby's childhood pals from Philadelphia.
McGannahan Skjellyfetti Nobody knew about it back then. I was just as disappointed as you when I found out, but back in the '70's and '80's Cosby (or at least his public self) was about as good a role model as you could get. It would have been nice if he followed his own advice.
We should separate the message from the speaker. Despite recent revelations about Bill, this show was still the universal show of peace and humanity. There was no black here. There was no white. There was only people It showed that good and bad people can come from ALL walks of life. And even bad guys can reform and turn their life around. This show dealt with some pretty hardcore shit, like STDs and drugs in a frank and no nonsense manner So while I am severely disappointed with Bill himself, there is still worthwhile messages that this show can offer us even today. And it shouldnt be disregarded just because the creator was actually a piece of shit.
ReverendSyn Exactly. And to be fair, this was like, what, forty years ago? It’s possible Bill wasn’t the bad person he’s become now. In all likely hood he was probably a much better man back then. A criminally underappreciated studio imo. Their biggest problem was the lack of successful in-house-developed properties, all their best shows were based on other people's works. Fat Albert is a case in point. Otoh they had a very distinctive "house style", you could always tell a Filmation production from anyone else's, and they did have some very clever artistic tricks up their sleeves that made their shows look more interesting than the small budgets gave them any right to.
Bill throwing the live action paintbrush that turns into an animation painting the exclamation sign after The Cosby Kids, before becoming a real one again that he catches on its return was a spectacular special effect for the time this was made. Not to mention the other scene with the sign thrown at Fat Albert who returns it to Bill.
The thing I find just as creepy as Cosby’s misdeeds is the singing voice of Fat Albert, Michael Gray was long deceased by the time the 2004 movie dropped.
Recent events aside, how come no one ever asks what's up with Fat Albert's hand? It just grows, and grows, and grows. His arm span is reached and it still grows for another half second, reaching the camera around 6-8 feet away. Even as a kid I caught on to how unnatural it is.
