A fun fact about summer version's second art: she carries a ring-shaped rock where the floaties are in her third art. This is because of one of the old-timey methods to see if someone was a witch: tying them, sometimes to rocks, and throwing them into water to see if they would float. Abby actually is a witch, the design kinda implies that, since she would float, she can use the rock as an inflatable ring.
@@Z-000R0 Supposedly, since witches rejected the right of baptism, water would "reject" them and that force would make them float. Dumb superstition to believe, but they didn't have scientific knowledge about this stuff and even today we have people who believe that the Earth is flat.
Little known fact about lovecraft: he married a Jewish woman later in life who unfortunately died a few years later due to illness, and near he’s dead bed he talked he’s regrets about he’s closed minded view on things etc. That’s the thing that people tend to forget about him, he was someone who is mentally unwell and needed help due to family trauma and unfortunate circumstances of the times so i appreciate you guys not dropping everything for some long winded speech about which ever side your on, you have a good laugh about it and you move on like rational people. I apologize if that was a big ranty, appreciate you guys keep up the good work
I actually did know that! To be fair, I didn't want to go off on a whole as rant about him because it felt too off topic, but I definitely don't approach him from a right or wrong standpoint, more that he was a deeply disturbed man whose many fears and issue manifested often in his writing, and actually created WONDERFUL horror in my opinion. There are certainly some aspects of him that I just laugh at and move on, and some we could not mention in a video XD, but I think a lot of people rag on him for racism without considering just how disturbed he was and how much it wasn't really a conscious decision of malice in my opinion.
@@t.h.e.animeclub I’m striving to be a self taught anthropologist so it just grinds my beers whenever I see people talk about a subject they clearly haven’t looked much into which is why I appreciate you guys who look into every nook and cranny on the topic
Hehe, I'm currently doing a double major bachelors in Anthro and History, so that's amazing, I love hearting from other people studying similar topics! Honestly, I'm trying to be better too, I know a few times I've rested too much on what I remembered rather than double checking.
if kagetora is next there is a very interesting theory which about their gender that you guys should definitely look into. Also about why there are TTRPG references with Abby is mainly because the most popular ( at least most well-known) TTRPG in Japan is Call of Cthulhu. you can see this in a lot of TTRPG systems in Japan really loving psychological horror and having a sanity system ( though to be fair I only know 2 others so grain of salt).
The NP’s on Na server have translated dialogue during the Servant’s np. It might help show more to the character if you should them specific videos that have them. The official USA Aniplex youtube have servant np with translation whenever a servant is related on the NA server. I find this important here cuz Abigail does say lovecraft language during the np (idk what to call it, but the voiceactor actually managed to say it). Abigail is not the only one to speak in this way, as there are other foreigner servants or servants connected to outer gods that say things in that way.
The Foreigner class is filled to the brim with some real interesting characters, though I'd say that of all the Lovecraft inspired ones, Abigail is definitely the peak in terms of character and story implementation. They got it pretty damn right with the first one. Currently excited to see which of them you'll end up reacting to next out of the lot, Van Gogh is a big one since I think that, in spite of the problems their story and character went through, I'd say they are definitely the second most interesting of the Lovecraftian-based Foreigners in the game (behind Abby), so seeing how Sekhie deals with them would be amusing. There's also the Cthulu-patroned one that debuted immediately after Abby did, their character design is something to marvel at and the way they interact with Cthulu is great. Out of all of them though, the one I'm most interested in seeing pop up in a video here is a certain space-faring voy, due to how conceptually and thematically beautiful Type-MOON managed to make them in both their debut series as well as in FGO. It's funny how, within the "Lovecraft referencea galore!" Servant Class, the character I'm most excited to see analyzed is the one who is both completely separate from Lovecraftian mythos as well as the only one in the class who's thematic stance on humanity is squarely on the "Humanity Fuck Yeah!" Side of the scale as opposed to the grimdark themes of most other Foreigners...
Traditionally, Yog-Sothoth (Abigail) and Azathoth (Unknown) are considered significantly more powerful than the other outer gods, with some authors arguing that Yog-Sothoth single-handedly prevents everyone else from entering the universe and doing whatever they want . Functionally, Yog-Sothoth is also considered a god and personification of space-time, present at all times and everywhere. “Past, present, future, in Yog-Sothoth everything is one. Remember that the Abby you fought in Salem has not yet gained full power, and the Abby you have in your Chaldea has been brutally nerfed because the summoning system does not take full advantage of the creature, that she is obsessed with can interpret. Just look around for Yogh Sothoth.
the reason for the stats is because the stat sheet uses the call of Cthulhu system. they made a Cthulhu joke by reference of the game call of Cthulhu, very clever
43:43 I think the cats trying to kill each other is something else. They are named Nosh and Luthar. Nosh (the black cat) is assumed to reference Cykranosh, in other words planet Saturn, which in Dreamlands is home to a race of monstrous cats that are enemies of Earth's cats, who in turn have an outpost on Dark Side of the Moon to watch out for them. Luthar (the gray one) is most likely a reference to Ulthar, a village in Earth's Dreamlands where cats are very revered, and not without reason. If you hurt a cat there, cats eat you. So yeah, I think Abby just has an Earth cat and a Saturn cat, who lore-wise don't like each other. 1:00:08 I'm not sure if I am remembering correctly, but the way I understood it was this: Absalom and Lavinia Whateleys were members of an unnamed mage family, whose magecraft was very conductive for Raum's goals, and thus their spirits were summoned and manifested to play the part of a Whateley family. So not really "people that inspired the fictional Whateleys in Lovecraft's writing", but more "people that were most similar in form and function to fictional Whateleys in Lovecraft's writing". Sort of the same situation as Sasaki Kojirou in "Fate/stay night". Qliphoth comes from Kabbalah. It (or maybe they, I believe it's actually a plural) is the evil opposite of Sefirot. I don't know enough to highlight the important parts, so I'll leave it at that. Hints: I can't find hint number 2, but I'll also say Nagao Kagetora (aka Uesugi Kenshin)... Hold on, I just noticed the plush tiger. Is that a bonus hint, referencing how Kenshin was born in Tiger year, had "tora" ("tiger") in most of his names, and was known as "Tiger of Echigo" among other things?
So the next one is nagao kagetora. Wich is nice since a new gudaguda is coming to NA in a month. I reccomend watching her expressions, the all smiles girl deserves it. Just to put more here. Abby and the lovecraftian servants actually have spoken lines in that messy and mysterious language. If you check again normal abby's noble phantasm on the witch ascension her first lines are not japanese, i think there may be the NA subtitles on youtube, but just know it wont make any sense haha.
More details on Sut-Typhon and Yog-Sothoth: Sut-Typhon in that combination is an entity first mentioned by occultist Aleister Crowley (Thelema ...). In name harkens back to the Greek Typhon, but also has other aspects. Kenneth Grant made the Yog-Sothtoth connection to Sut-Typhon in "The Magical Revival" in 1972. Interestingly he made claims that Lovecraft had created an actual Mythos by channeling if not entities then at least universal principles in a dream-state and he equated Yog-Sothtoh with Sut-Typhon (I also love Crowley's writing has been described as notorious for being opaque with "verbal and conceptual labyrinths" - a description that could fit Nasu just as well.) 57:55 I recently went on a binge of searching for what FGO's Salem chapter referenced, and I think the author of this chapter primarily used Chaosium's "Call of Cthulhu" game's lore. In FGO, Lavinia's father (who is brought up in literally 2 lines) is named Noah, which is also the name Old Man Whateley is given in Keith Herber's "Return to Dunwich" book, intended for the aforementioned game. Absalom is also given in this book, but not as Lavinia's grandfather, but as a more distant ancestor. He lived in Salem until 1692, when he and other like-minded people, who realized what was coming soon, left Salem and founded Dunwich. There's a chance those names were given in some earlier source, but if that's case I didn't find it. Besides, "Call of Cthulhu" game is apparently really popular in Japan, so I feel that it's a safe bet that it was used as a reference.
Abby is, in the story, probably my favorite servant. So much so that I bought the adorable figure of Abby and Lavinia actually having fun at an insane markup. Mainly cause I wanted to be able to see Abby happy at least once. Lol Edit:not so fun, the first "foreigner" class servant of a Japanese game was a blue eyed, blonde haired white girl. Lol
Bit late to the party, but an interesting fact. While Abby sprite is 2D, the tentacles are 3D. That actually used to be the way sprites of extra-dimesional/terrestrial are signified in game. Altrough it isn't that way anymore.
Aight, I'm guessing we're Kagetora. On your witch trial question, at least where I'm from we don't really get taught about that. It starts from the basics like the ancient civilisations and similar stuff. The latter grades basically devoted history to the Weimar Republik, WW1 and WW2 and the social environments at the time and stuff closely related to that. Btw I really hope I don't sound rude or anything like that, but have you thought about looking at translations for the NP chants? Besides being cool they do have references to their legends, that I think would be cool to look at.
hmmmm, I'll mention the chants thing to NikNak! Also, awesome, I admit I'm very curious about exactly what history eras people learn the most in other places. Like, at least where I am we don't really spend much time on Pre-revolutionary war America. Ironically ancient civs are basically paid lip service in low grades so you don't learn much other than the bare basics, but focus a ton on more modern history (which is fair) and junior year is always specifically US History, but it really focuses on Post revolution and the 20th century.

funny you compare her to the norns. A lot of recent servants got that vibe going on.
