    Also, having an LLC is not mandatory, but it is something to consider when you get serious about your candle business. This helps protect your assets if you ever get sued.

      @@Southern_Beauty81 so a sp will be just as good for you. If you get insurance added on then you don't need to get an LLC unless you plan on getting a store front or get workers... then you will need a LLC. A SP will be just as fine if your starting out by working in your home. Make sure your contracts are straight, and that your wording covers all layers. You can also get business insurance to protect your SP.

    I completely agree Tiana! Especially the part about testing for candle burning abuse (power burns, not trimming, etc). I posted a video on my channel about my testing processes and included that info as well. It's important to test for exceptions. One, it helps you avoid potential major issues as you mentioned. And two, you learn more about your own candles and how they burn. :) Good job.

  • @moonlightj0y
    @moonlightj0y 3 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    Yes you are correct! And you have to trim every time it's reignited and keep them away from the walls. I also feel people should stop putting whole flower pedals, rose buds and whole dried orange slices! I tested out rose pedals and literally saw them going in flames! Herbs or flowers need to be grind down to tiny pieces for it to work. Another issue I see is people not knowing the appropriate wick sizes for certain candle jars. Especially the smaller size jars I've noticed how important it is to be really careful with wick sizes. So many people use too big of a wick for a tiny jar.

    This video is so necessary. I just saw a picture like this one in a FB group. It's so scary. Candles smell good but can be very dangerous depending on how they've been made and or used. From one candle maker to another, thank you for these gems.

    Thank you for informing everyone about the legal side of things so many youtubers jump on what's hot and never speak about the legality of their products. People will sue for anything and it's best to be protected at all costs.

    I appreciate the information. These are things people don’t think about and should be informed about. I am new to the candle making business and still doing all of my research and planning. However, in your video you said that the warning label doesn’t mean anything. I think that should be disregarded, or maybe state your point differently. We all know how important warning labels are, you even said you use 2. Warning labels are a MUST. Viewers should not be confused with your statement. And not having them on your product in court would be even worse then if you had them.
    Other then that, loved the video! New subbie

But people will not care to really research this and just wanna do it for the money regardless if the mistake can cause someone to lose there home because of the candle makers negligence. I never heard of candle insurance thank you for this tid bit!!!!

    Thank you for saying this. I've seen lots of candle makers doing that with putting dried flowers or stones in candles, and I've done it myself only to have that very thing happen to me. The candle caught fire and had I not been in the room it would have been very very bad. So I don't add anything to my candles other than wax and wicks now. I'm going to purchase insurance soon as well. Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks so much Tiana! I make 100% beeswax candles with essential oils. I’m just starting out, and the oil to wax ration I learned from a TH-cam maker was so high that I had a candle catch on fire. Thankfully it was just one in my home, but I had to re-melt all the candles and double the wax. Testing seems safe now. When I tried to look up what happened online, there wasn’t even one resource that contained the info you are sharing. Thank you - this video is so helpful to so many!

    I'm so glad you raised this point. I just saw a candle maker on tik tok who is inserting 'surprise jewelry' (which is wrapped in a plastic bag, then wrapped in a piece of foil) into the candle. So she pours wax into the jar, allows the wax to semi solidify then inserts the jewelry wrapped in plastic and foil and adds another layer of wax. Can you imagine the potential fire hazard!

    I’ve only just started making candles, but I’ve known about the necessity for wick trimming for some time, and as an avid candle consumer I can confidently say I’ve never trimmed a wick 😱
    I’ll pull off any “mushrooming”, otherwise I just let it burn for HOURS, and chances are most customers will too. Before people come at me I NEVER leave a candle unattended, near flammable items, or on surfaces that can’t handle the heat, but for all my safety I still don’t trim or limit burn time, so don’t expect customers to play it safe/smart 😅

    i think its just common sense. , I work in the floral trade seasonally at this point and at christtmas we place candles in the christmas wreaths. the candlse are still wraped in plastic bec. to unwrap them it would slow us down. . We have had so many PPl that are so stupid they lit the candle on fire while it was still wraped in plastic and then they call us. it got to the point were we placed notes with the arrangments and still we get calls in every season from Folks who are so stupid they still light them and not unwrap them.

    Can we include in the Terms of Service that the customer agrees to absolve us of any responsibility for damages/fires caused by customer negligence? Or is that too easy.. lol

    • @rfrprof09
      @rfrprof09 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      All they would have to do is have evidence to show they weren’t negligent to show the “shadow of a doubt” and you would still be liable. Especially if you’re running it out of your home with DIY style materials/equipment and office space. Since you would be the defendant it would be very difficult to prove that your operation is 100% fool proof and to also prove that the customer was negligent when you weren’t present.

    A customer told me they literally had a candle crack and flame. Im thinking it might be because of a different fragrance I used, it has Jasmine in it. I didn’t understand because I’ve followed all the same proper steps and FO%. Or maybe my next thing is wondering if the vendors for jars are making the jar materials much thinner and more likely to crack with too much heat etc...
    I’ve made many candles and never had this issue. Only up until my new re-order of jars..
    If you have a class more in depth of how to make a candle “less likely” to happen on my end.

      Even though a wax says it can hold 10% there are some fragrances that are very heavy and will seep out even if you follow the 10% rule. I very rarely add 10% of FO to my recipes. I think the strawberry candle is the only one that is 10%. When you test make candles check to see if you see any pools of oil seeping out. I have 2 fragrances that do this and you have to dial it back to 7% or 8% so it doesn’t seep. I have had 1 customer email me a pic of her candle in flames. I noticed the candle was half burned and she did admit she did not trim the wicks during the time she had the candle. The candle was in her sight so there was no incident, but it seemed she was unaware that she had to trim the wicks. I am not sure how long she had the candle burning during that session. She was nice the whole time and I just reminded her to trim candle wicks. That’s why it is important to have insurance and be fully covered if you decide to seriously sell candles.

      @@TianaCoats Thank you! I’m definitely going to dial it back. I did 10% FO because that’s how I learned but I think to be on the safer side I’ll dial it back. Someone had the flame issue with one of my candles on a specific fragrance. It’s crazy because that’s never happened to me before. I’ll be honest, it made me so afraid to make any more candles! I just felt bad because I don’t want to be responsible for any harm.
      I also don’t know how long exactly the candle was lit or even how trimmed down.

    Also what is the additive you suggest to add to wax if there is a pool of oil?

    I had a viewer question me when I said you’re only supposed to burn candles for 4 hours max. They then went on to tell me that they burn candles for 14 hours 😳
