I have a candle business and the other thing you want to have is your biz registered as an LLC in your state as well as INSURANCE! Filing as an LLC means if someone was injured from using your products, they can't come after your personal assets. This is when your insurance kicks in. Great video!
Can I ask how much one might pay for general liability/product liability insurance? I'm still in the researching stages of my business, but I can't really get an answer from any site. I know it will definitely be more expensive as a beginner.
An LLC is usually a disreguarded entity so if you own a home and it's your LLC with no other partners you are exposed if one of your candles burns someone's house down, you have no protection with an LLC. S corporation operates as an LLC with the S election after you create a corporation. simple but not always cheap depending where you live. You also don't need to have a corporation to get a resale permit so you can buy things tax free!
I want to start my own candle business... And the more I research the more I'm overwhelmed with it. There's so much more involved in it than just simply making candles! Ugh!😩
Keep in it! I'm researching starting a candle business myself, and whenever I start to feel overwhelmed, I close my laptop for the day and come back to it the next.
Definitely allow a $500 budget. I had the grand idea of selling my candles in two packs with two complimentary fragrances meant to be burned at the same time. I found out the higher quality fragrance oils (Candle Science, Lone Star, Flaming Candle) are complex with many notes, top layers, bottom layers, and this made it difficult to match complimentary fragrances without it smelling to stinky. To create four unique sets of complimentary candles (8 difference scents) I had to purchase about 30 difference scents. The cost of 1 oz fragrance bottles is not expensive. It's the shipping that'll kill you.
Starting my candle business and I’ve spent a lotttt more than $500 but it’s all great quality & very unique candles. Spending the time to perfect my website 🙏🏽 God bless anyone going into this field! It’s not easy but worth it to me. 💐💖 Thank you for sharing!
great tips! but i totally 100% have to disagree with "no one caring" about your website. i personally will not order anything from a website that looks subpar. also, your branding and website has a HUGE impact on the way you are allowed to price your items. if you want to price your items luxury, or even a candle for over $20, your branding and website HAVE to be up to par, so people have an understanding in what they are paying for.
I absolutely agree about the look of your website. It has to look professional and trustworthy. What I meant was that nobody will visit your website without some sort of traffic. The site will not be seen in the huge sea of websites unless you have some sort of following or are running paid ads. It will save you money if you work on growing traffic on sites like Etsy using SEO with an already existing audience of millions of shoppers. A website will be a better option once you start driving your own traffic.
I started out by colecting my mom's used candles and making her knew ones with the wax left over from them, and then I started making them myself every once in a while when I had leftover money.
This was just what I needed on my first day of 2020! I am in the testing phase of my new business venture and I was just thinking of ways to make a little extra money to add to my start up business budget.
Hey thank you for this info, i am 26 and a high funtoning autistic, since Grad. high school i have found it hard to find work, i am not very teachy for somebody my age and the resterant Biz i found i am not good in. over the last few years i have been trying to fig something i can do from home and sell online to make some money, i live with family so extra income is good. With what i have been reading candlemake seems decently profitable. I may do candlesticks though but thank you.
Thank you. I’ve been deliberating on starting a candle business and soap etc. This has given me lots on help. I didn’t think I could afford it but you have convinced me I can. New subscriber. Ty so much. Really appreciate it. X
You are so on point. But I guess she’s basically doing this for people who just registered their LLC. And if not, that needs to be included. It’s very necessary.
You do not have to have an LLC starting out. You can file your taxes as a small sole proprietorship business. LLC cost a lot of money that I wouldn’t spend starting out. Once you see that things are going to be successful then I would say go with LLC
Ppl need to inform themselves about what an LLC is and when it’s necessary and when it’s NOT necessary. In the starting phases you do NOT need it, hardly ever does a home based business need an LLC unless you are working around customers who can potentially sue you for ruining goods or properties. Please educate yourself on licensing and businesses.
But why wouldn’t you start your LLC in the beginning? Every purchase you make pertaining to your business is tax deductible which = $$$. And with making candles, you could absolutely harm a customer, the candle could explode and without an LLC (Limited Liability), that customer could come after you and your personal assets for burning down their home or disfigurement. Even if your business is home based, you can still register an LLC because then your rent/mortgage, light bill, whatever is tax deductible. So long as you store the products you sell in the home, you can consider yourself a home based business, and with selling candles, you’d definitely want to protect your assets.
@@taylortolbert858 it’s never a bad idea to get an LLC but for candle making? I have never heard of candles exploding and if it did I doubt that will catch a case. Well what I was saying and I can’t speak for others is that in the beginning stages of a home based business it’s not necessary. Some ppl make it sound as if it absolutely necessary in order to start this business and it’s not true. The only reason I would get an LLC but with time is so my business name would represent my business and not my birth name and also to open up a business account under my business name. Yes LLC protects and covers personal assets but in this case it’s not mandatory in order to start.
thanks for the video! however, she forgot something huge when you start a business: your business registration. You want to be legal and you need to legally and officially register your business otherwise Etsy, Amazon, etc wont let you sell your products until you show your Tax number and more things to prove you are a legal business. To do so, it may cost you around 500$ + (be licensed to operate your business from home, registration in the State you live in, and more and all that has a fee.) If you use a lawyer or a tax guy it may cost you a lot more. So that is another expense to consider so total your candle business can easily cost you around 1000$. Thank me later.
I've learned that shipping is absolutely horrible when buying products for business. I thought I was the only one and was quite frustrated. This helps a lot!
Lucky Sport I absolutely appreciate your comment. I’m sorry they shut down all of the candle supply store in your area. That’s insane. Well I have a candle supply store minutes away from me but it opens from 10am-4pm Mon-Fri but I work 9:30am-6:30pm Mon-Fri. 😭 I am trying best to find something local in Georgia. You’re right it will definitely cost more than $500 for sure. I just purchased a printer that can make stickers and that was at least $170 I also love your advise on the pricing schedule and a break even analysis.
I bought my starter kit from candle pro. Came with everything needed to make first batch. Still try to come up with logo and labels for container. You helped me out alot with all the advice you give.
I love this! I started to make my own personalize homemade candles few months ago and I didn't know how to start my business. I when to Amazon try open a store, but someone told me research first on youtube. I ran across this today Thank you so much I needed to hear this. My one issue was budget on supplies and getting my audience attention.
I was able to get more amount of products and stock for a long time for just $270 for soap, candle and lip balm ur numbers are crazy high and I do the labels on my own including boxing or wrapping
Thank you so much for this video, it was very helpful! I love that it was short, sweet & to the point!! I was actually watching a similar video that was over 26 minutes long when I saw yours in the feed. When I saw that it was giving similar information in less time, I switched lol.☺️💖
Just found your channel and have been making candles for a while. Would love to create my own business, definitely binge watching your channel this weekend!!
Tiana you are so AWESOME! I just used the spreadsheet not only for my candles but my soaps and what a eye opener on what I have spent so far on my startup. Thank you so much!!!!!
Tiana, you spoke upon. Not paying a lot for website. Can you explain how you went about that? This site is really hurting my bottom line. Thank you for this video. I needed It!
What she means is that using something like Shopify for example there is a monthly fee, whereas if you use Wordpress and use a basic ecommerce theme, its free. However, with wordpress you'll need a little knowledge of how it works, or watch a few tutorials, like everything else i guess
Thanks for all the very useful information, I have been looking into Etsy and Amazon handcrafted. You know what got me when I started making candles just for me and my wife, was that the labels on my favorite store candles all say made with real essential oils. What a massive lie that is as only the really expensive aroma therapy candles contained essential and other oils. After spending $100 ( Rookie Mistake) on essential oils, I found out that you would need to put a ton of essential oils in a candle just to smell it, that’s really expensive and some are even dangerous, being burned in candles is toxic, some smell horrible and some lose all sent when improperly heated. Then I discovered they used fragrance oils through helpful TH-cam videos such as this from Standly Handcrafted, Timber Ridge Gifts, Memory Box candles, and Cassie California are where I got most of the information I have learned. So helpful Thank you. One thing I’d have added if it’s not already in another video I haven’t made it to yet, is a business license and the importance of starting at least an LLC with liability and business insurance to avoid any kind of hassle or losing your business and everything you own down the road vs. On your own and on your shoulders. Just look at Gorilla Glue incident. No matter how many warning labels you plaster on your product in big bold lettering, people will find a way to abuse or misuse it and some low life injury lawyer from the nose bleed section, aka an ambulance chaser will want to hold you responsible. Case and point: A lady my wife works with and her husband were arguing one night, just the beginning of this year. It got physical and tipped over a table with a candle burning, only it didn’t go out. Instead it had set fire to the carpet and curtains until it was too late. The fire department said it was a lost cause and just let it burn out. The insurance company doing the investigation blamed the candle and not the idiots that knocked it over. Who knows how this could have gone had they decided to sue, I guess they still could if they wanted to seek out an attorney. Hope and wish you all the best with your businesses.
Hi In one of your vlogs If im not mistaken I heard you are from Texas, the reason I bring it up is because I want to start my online store and wanted to know all the legal process (if any) you need to have your online business. Thank you so much and I really appreciate you and the info you give out! God bless!
I used to buy the anchor hocking brand from Walmart. I'm not sure if they still sell them, but they didn't have any logos on them. If I remember correctly they came out to be around .50 a piece.
I wish we had candle suppliers/shops around my area but the only thing i have is candle science. I honestly didn’t think the shipping was too crazy! I bought jars, wax & really everything and shipping was only $20!
Dacia E you must live really close to their base. I buy my fragrance oils, dyes, and wicks from them and my shipping is usually $10 for a $45 order. If I tried to buy a 10lbs bag of wax from them the shipping alone will be $25+ just for that one item and jars had a shipping rate of $60.
Thank you soo much for this Information! I just started my candle business and had no idea about the cost of everything to get started and was making some drastic decisions about a fancy website, fancy labels , spending unnecessary money .
Thank you Tiana! I am thinking of starting a candle business and have been trying to do as much research as I can. Your video was really helpful, to the point, and insightful.
I absolutely wanna check the spreadsheet out, I’m starting out and am about $250 in and I know I still need wax melt containers, tape, shipping boxes, labels, 🥺🤣 I’m trying not too panic. Although I’m glad I’ve been very conservative and smart with what I buy! Definitely doing the double broiler method for now 🤣
That was helpful. I started my candle business 4 months ago. . I want to start a TH-cam channel now can you tell me what I need to do please. Thank you in advance
Thank you for your channel and the timing of this post! I am following your instructions to guide me through beginning stages for candle making / business. You are a great communicator and teacher!
Really helpful! I currently work in Digital Marketing and have been trying to conjure up a way to sell a product that I personally love (I love candles), while also utilizing my digital marketing skills to drive sales to .com. I'm going to start small and just start making my own candles and go from there.
Essential oils are from plants (the word “essential” here means essence, as in essence of plants), while fragrant oils can be synthetic or a combination of synthetic and natural. Of course, you can also refer to essential oils as fragrant oils, since that would technically be correct, as essential oils are used to fragrance things; however, for the sake of clarity, the consensus is that one word is used for natural, and another is for synthesized/synthesized-natural. Speaking of essential oils, natural does not mean better; just as peanuts and strawberries natural, but it doesn’t mean that they’re safe for everybody. Scenting your candles with essential oils is a waste of money because you’d have to use so much for weak scent throw; don’t be put off by the word “synthetic,” synthetic doesn’t mean unsafe; buy your oils from a reputable candle/craft supplies place. If I want to scent a room with essential oils, I’d just use a diffuser.
I rarely comment on pages, but this was concise and helpful for beginners. It's a great starting point w/o being overwhelming with the legal stuff that scares you from taking the risk 😊 And yes that's super important to know but that wasn't the point of this video and I appreciate the separation. I make body butters for myself & family, but have wanted to do sell them and candles for years. I think I'm going to take the plunge. Thank you Tiana 😍😍❤️❤️
@@TianaCoats I have been having trouble with finding insurance and am SOOO happy you mentioned NEXT. I think I will use them. Thank you so much for this info!!!
I always wanted to start a business. However, being in Illinois, starting a business of any type is going to cost me well within or close to a thousand dollars. 500 along just to get LLC, 150 to get reseller license, 0 to 200 just to get a professional website, 200 just for any type of policy to put onto your website. Again, I am ready to start a business, just want to be prepared for anything.
I am a beginner candlemaking I want to learn how to make candles as a hobby and maybe someday make it into a business how do you get your names for your candles I think I would have a big issue naming the candles.? I am also new to your channel I have subscribed
I have been wanting to start a candle business for a while but just needed some motivation and coming across your informative videos girlll you are thee best! Thank you! I have my doubts and have been procrastinating but I feel much more motivated after watching your videos😁🕯❣️ Question what if I have a logo and name already but have not started actually making candles, lol should I wait on posting about until I actually have something? 🥴 please helpp lol
Great information!!! ,Iam researchjng and trying to see if this is something I would like to do and maybe even go into business,I love candles and what better way, then to make your own,right...would you recommend me trying a starter kit to see if it will work for me...
Hi Sandra. I make soaps and fragrances and noticed that the ingredients are similar for candles too so am thinking why not? My worry though is I don't know anyone that likes candles🙈☹️ but I can tap into my existing base I guess. Good luck with the business 😌🙏
Thank you soo much for the worksheet. I honestly didn't understand it at first, but since I've started adding information onto it I am truly seeing where the money is going to the most. As a start-up, it is a very useful tool.
Happy new year. Success your way. Thank you for this video Tiana. Yes i started with $500 but i spent way more than that with the wicks testing🤦🏽♀️. And i am still learning lol
Thank you for all the information that you're giving us I really appreciate it .do you have any suggestions for like basil and rosemary scents herbal ones etc? Best place to get those candle scents Thank you
Hi! Thanks for this great video. I am starting to learn the process of this business, and I watched a video from creative hive (she mentions you) and she said that we should start with a website like shopify or something like that, and not jump directly into amazon or Etsy.
Mei form Creative Hive is such an amazing business person! I only say to start with Etsy because they have a built in audience. You can learn SEO to attract buyers to your product. A Shopify store saves you a ton on fees, but you do have to drive your own audience. If you have a way to drive your own traffic then Shopify is the way to go.
Really great info especially about the domain name, cause I don't have a following right now. I was really unsure about a website and this gave me clarity. Thank you!!
Thank you!!! You’re awesome. I am so grateful for you and other content creators that give valuable information. There’s so much to learn and it’s nice to be able to find a lot of information from a few sources, that are honest and realistic.
super video ! you are so sweet to share all your tips and experience ! I am tying different waxes now, I was wondering what your favorite wax was and where you liked to shop for it?
Hello Tiana ust watched your video. Quick question I'm just starting out my candle making business and I wanted to do tealights for some friends and coworkers to save costs and get my name out there.
I had to pause this video to thank u for making this video. It was much needed, thank you !! And i love how u calculate each item with explanation where to get it and why. ♥️
Do you have any suggestions on organic candles like I wanna do organic fragrance girl I want my candle jar to be non-breakable like maybe made out of something that is safe for the environment is that possible ?

I wish we had candle suppliers/shops around my area but the only thing i have is candle science. I honestly didn’t think the shipping was too crazy! I bought jars, wax & really everything and shipping was only $20!
That's not too bad of a shipping cost. I'm really bad at forgetting things too so the candle supply has saved me a bunch of money haha.
Midnight Daydreaming omg really?! that’s crazy. i live in near san jose!
Dacia E I live in St. Louis, MO and they’re based in North Carolina (I think).
I’m just starting my candle business and thank you 🙏🏽
How much weight do those boxes hold? Have you done a candle making, labeling and packaging video?
Hello Tiana, thanks for your very helpful videos, I just discovered your site, and have subscribed, Warm Regards, Hal
Candles are a recession proof industry as far as I'm concerned. Great business video
Your light is so freaking cute! Summer vibes are the best vibes.
Thank you for your channel and the timing of this post! I am following your instructions to guide me through beginning stages for candle making / business. You are a great communicator and teacher!
It makes me so happy to hear that! Best wishes for your new business 😀
Thank you for all the great advise. I really appreciate it! 🙏🏽❤🙏🏽
Really helpful! I currently work in Digital Marketing and have been trying to conjure up a way to sell a product that I personally love (I love candles), while also utilizing my digital marketing skills to drive sales to .com. I'm going to start small and just start making my own candles and go from there.
Thanks for the info I make candles don't know how to start a business 😊
Whats the difference between fragrance oil and essential oil ? and what's the best oil for soy candle? Thankyou:)
And essential oils are primarily alchohol based and burn off in waxes...
Tammy R wow! Thank you
You can get free boxes and padded mailers from USPS, and I got 100 bubble mailers from them. You don't pay shipping to.
So helpful! Thank you for being selfless and sharing!
What kind of wax would be good for a strong scent? What kind of wax do you use ?
I rarely comment on pages, but this was concise and helpful for beginners. It's a great starting point w/o being overwhelming with the legal stuff that scares you from taking the risk 😊 And yes that's super important to know but that wasn't the point of this video and I appreciate the separation.
I make body butters for myself & family, but have wanted to do sell them and candles for years. I think I'm going to take the plunge. Thank you Tiana 😍😍❤️❤️
Starting mine off with $500, I'm so excited but so nervous lol
Thank you so much Tiana. What about insurance? I have insurance for my current business, but it won't cover candles. Any suggestions? Thank you again!
I've used Liberty Mutual in the past, and I recently enrolled with a company called NEXT.
@@TianaCoats Thank you so much!
@@TianaCoats I have been having trouble with finding insurance and am SOOO happy you mentioned NEXT. I think I will use them. Thank you so much for this info!!!
I am just starting out. I love your videos! How would I get your pdf for start a candle business
Awesome Advice, Thanks and Subscribed !
Very good tips..Relaunching candle business...thanks so much

Hi Sandra. I make soaps and fragrances and noticed that the ingredients are similar for candles too so am thinking why not? My worry though is I don't know anyone that likes candles🙈☹️ but I can tap into my existing base I guess. Good luck with the business 😌🙏

Hi there do you suggest we purchase the starter kit from candle science if we are just starting out learning how to make candles?
Thank you for all the information that you're giving us I really appreciate it .do you have any suggestions for like basil and rosemary scents herbal ones etc? Best place to get those candle scents Thank you
This is great! I'm starting a candle business soon and this video was extremely helpful.
@@TianaCoats thank youuu for quick reply and information! I have so much to learn but you guys are such great mentors. Thanks for your videos!
makikng candles has always been a dream. Is it ever too late to do so?
