Great thinking including the performance of the copper projectile on Sambar, haven’t seen that on an actual shoulder before. Especially seeing as copper might unfortunately become the new normal…

I shot hundreds of sambar in the 3006. I've gone from bonded bullets such as 180gr nosler accubond, woodleigh 220gr RNSP, core and cup 180gr Sierra Game Kings, 165gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, 180gr Nosler Partitions. The one that pulls them up the quickest is the 165gr Nosler Ballistic Tip, and leaves the best blood trails if they leg it. Haven't tried monolith brass or copper as I've now got a several hundred ballistic tips to use up first.

Thanks Ed, really enjoyed that. Coming from pest control I’ve always used cup n core and it’s always just flowed over to hunting. I think I might pick a cartridge I use for food gathering and invest in some copper bullets now!!

I’m telling ya heavy cast lead boolits.
Hardness of alloy determines effective impact velocity or vice versa.
I’d love to see a heavy for caliber flat point hard cast & a wheel weight alloy vs jacketed & monolithic .
In heavy scrub / moderate ranges, cast is probably one of the best & most predictable performance game bullets to use.
I’d love to see a stoutly loaded 44 mag , 45 colt or 454 casull from a 20 ish “ barrelled leaver gun using hard cast & a softer wheel weight boolit against any of those cartridges listed . 23 - 31 grs of powder 300ish gr boolit. Very cheap & extremely effective medium - big game cartridges.
Even in 3006 , 303 or 358 win try some hawksburry river hard cast loaded around the 1700 - 2100 fps mark .

I only hunt sambar, was running a 338wm 250gr core lock and it works but much more then you need but the clean pass through certainly leave a great blood trail.
Now a run the humble 308 165gr federal fusion does perfectly fine aim for neck/high shoulder

A very well thought out series mate. I wonder if the powers that be watched and understood the results, would they reconsider the minimum cartridge size allowed in Vic for Sambar hunting?

From my understanding the original rules were proposed by SSAA, so surely we can make a submission to have them changed.

@fhckoutdoors The 2012 game regulations are now up for review. The regulatory impact statement will come out soon and in there you will find the cartridge selection for species. The reason you can use shotgun slugs from 2012 was due to me and 2 other guys that wrote to 1 spring Street. Our words are line for line in the regulations because we wanted to use our combo guns shotgun barrel. The hunting organisations of which I was a treasurer did not want this and were outright hostile. Just like they were to jagd terriers and dachshunds However all made it to the regulations.
If you want 6.5 creedmoor of similar in there, then there has to be a concerted effort with private submissions. Relying on somebody in a hunting organisation to make a submission that includes you particular needs isn't going to work.
