I applaud you on that support for your trellis...a lot of people make them top flimsy and they collapse...i have hardy kiwi and muscadine grapes. Both have to have stout support....

    Good honest work!!
You won't ever have to pay for Cross-Fit classes.
You ARE a Cross Fit class! LOL
I saw a few videos clips on how to mask your microphone from wind noise.
    They might be helpful.
    Are you close to Logan?
Sounds like all the Delta flights come right over your home.
I REALLY enjoy your gardening vidoes!
    Thanks!

I have been growing the hardy kiwis too for 5+ years. Be sure to note the cultivar if it's listed in case one of the male or female dies since there's 3 different cultivars and they don't all pollinate each other type.
Yours look really established with a thick trunk so you might just get something by next spring. Mine are just days from flowering.

MrChipGardener I've just purchased three hardy kiwi to go in my garden. Two female and one male. I'm in Alabama and we have a huge issue with Japanese Beetles. Do you think I will have problems with the beetles on my kiwi and if so can you suggest some prevention???

I have Japanese beetles in my garden. They don't really bother my kiwi leaves. They much prefer my grape leaves and a few other types of leaves.
I just fill a jug with water and dish soap and flick the Japanese beetles into it to collect them and discard them.

I live in PA outside of Philly, and the Japanese beetles love eating my kiwi leaves

How did these plants do? Are they going dormant now?

+Cheeto Fingers Surprisingly they did not do much. The one on the right started growing some vine like branches. I don't remember which one was the male and female. It might be because I did some root pruning and they needed to get acclimated to the new conditions. Hopefully they will make it through the winter and next spring take off. I'm not sure how long I have to wait for fruit.

I've been watching a bunch of videos about hardy kiwi and getting it started. It can take years to set fruit. The male is more vigorous than the female according to one guy and it all can become invasive if you don't keep it pruned. I'm struggling with whether I want to plant this or not, I'm leaning towards not. I'm starting goji's in the spring and thinking about planting a chicago fig but this plant scares me. You wait for years for it to fruit and then can't neglect it or it'll take over everything.

Banana trees in New England really?

    • @NewEnglandgardening
      @NewEnglandgardening  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I was able to get bananas to form one year but the stem broke from the weight of the bananas. I did not know you are suppose to support them. They don't fruit at the right time of the year either.
