In case viewers have some of the same questions as posted below... this was filmed at Edible Landscaping, a nursery in Virgina. They have a website and also some videos her on TH-cam, including one on how they grow kiwi. Edible Landscaping offers lots of great plants for creating a beautiful yard that also produces food! I'm not exactly sure of their USDA hardiness zone, but it is probably zone 7. Theoretically they could also grow the fuzzy kiwi in that zone, but the hardy kiwi- Actinidia arguta, is ahardy to about USDA zone 5. Arctic kiwi is hardy to about USDA zone 4. They need moist but well-drained soil. To produce 50+ pounds of fruit at maturity, they will need a lot of water, but can suffer from 'wet feet'. Stong support is required, a trellis, fence, or wall. They can be trained over a pergola, too. Full sun is best for maximum fruit production, but in hot climates they prefer some shade. Most need a male and female to produce fruit, but 'Issai' is supposedly self-fertle.
I've grown Issai, it will fruit without a male but the fruits 95+% will fall off long before ripening, with a male it will grow larger fruits and they will not fall off, but they are still smaller than a standard female vines fruits so its better to just get a female/male plant setup, 1 male to every 7-8 females or so

They originated in China, but New Xealand growers named them after their bird, the kiwi, supposedlbecause the fuzzy fruit resembles that bird. Hardy kiwi A. arguta and 'arctic' kiwi, A. kolomikta, will grow in most areas of the norther tier of the US.

I am planning to plant edible landscape on my 5 acres. Can you give a brief description of your trellis construction? I have an idea for mine but since yours is working quite nicely, I may mimic yours if it is not what I had in mind. Love the video. Thank you so much for a detailed explanation and camera work.

everyone is always worried about cold, here in Florida (zone 10) it's the heat and humidity that kills everything

My male and female cold hardy kiwi are like 5 years old and not 1 flower yet. They are also huge and vigorous.
I think its still a little early in the year for flowers, maybe in a month you'll see some this year

I have Anna Hardy Kiwi, one male and 1 female, one has fuzzy stems and leaves and is very attractive looking, is it the female or male?
Even regular Kiwi is VERY FAR from being a tropical fruit.

No, they are not. You'll need a male plant to get kiwi. @nacek4444
You have to do some homework before interview a farmer.
